Yes, the harp is interesting, but you played it simply spectacular. As they say: it's not the brush that makes the picture, it's the hand that holds it.

I used to like Golden Melodys until I bought one in G that was defective right out of the box. The one draw reed was severely damaged and made a horrible rattling noise when played. Since then I have stuck to Marine Bands (any variant thereof) which have never let me down. I also play Seydels of course because they're simply amazing (not to mention you can order them in equal temperament and have them custom tuned through their harp configurator)

When I started playing Marine Band harps (the 1950's) they cost exactly one dollar. As the years & decades went by, what seemed to hold true is that quality control never improved on harps even though the cost of them kept going up higher & higher. Basically you still have to by 6 harps of the same type in the same key to be sure you have one really good one.

My new GM in G arrived today !! And what a DISAPPOINTMENT !! I know I am not Howard Levy, but I do know how to do all draw bends well enough to say that this harp came out-of-the-box with so poorly set gaps and reed shapes that it was extremely difficult to play draw-bends 1', 2" and 2', while the hole 3 draw bends were impossible. So I went out and bought a T7 screwdriver , took the GM apart and saw clearly that the reed gaps and shapes were a disaster for holes 1, 2 & 3 -- what a lemon . After working on them, I began re-assembling the harp: next negative point found was that the reed plates no longer have "guides" (as in the old GM) so that it was much more difficult to hold them in the correct position so that the reedplate screws would pass into the holes in both plates. Once re-assembled it was playable (but I will still have to repeat all of this because those draw bends are still not ideal). Positive points: nice and loud, good tonal quality, good feel in my hands and between the lips.

Sorry to hear that. I'm guessing that's a rarity since folks I know that have one so far, are telling me that they're playing well. It can happen but retailers WILL except a return. It's Hohner's policy now for both in store retailers or online.
