Wow, just amazing. This was the heyday of concerts. Dickey and Dan were such a great duo. Dan was so underrated and so was Dickey for that matter. Butch and Jaimoe were always the best. I wish I could go back and live it all over again. I was a senior in HS when this took place and all of the shows were just raw talent. God bless all of those who have passed for the great music and memories that will last for generations.

I have loved the Allman Brothers since the 70s and always believed that Gregg Allman was one of the best blues singers ever not to mention the incredible talent of Dicky Betts and Duanne Allman. I finally got to see Gregg in 2015 at the San Diego County Fair and didn't regret a minute of it although I missed the great guitar undertones which were replaced by more horns, etc. to Gregg's delight and will. RIP Gregg thanks for the great music!

THE HARP PLAYER = JIM ESSERY. Met Jim in Flagler Beach after surfing...there was a bar across from the pier, walked over and he was playing with a drummer who was taught by Artemis Pyle (Skynyrd) and accompanied by a guitar player whose name is Ace Moreland who was friends with Steve Gaines (Skynyrd post Ed King). The deep south and Florida is a magical, magical place. Been out in Koo Koo Fornia for too long...music scene out here can't touch what the south has....unless you are into P Diddy "Greatest Musician" that can't play an instrument (eyes rolling). it's sad. In any event - Jim and Ace were awesome, super nice and gave me some of their CDs for free. I LOVED hearing Jim's stories about playing with the ABB. Super great guy. Ace had a studio and I went out to play some drums at his studio (i play guitar, drums and sing) and got to hear more Steve Gaines stories and Derek Trucks too - Ace knew him / jammed with Derek when he was a kid. Artemis lived out in St. Augustine (12 min up north on A1A)...as did Jim. Ace and Jim both passed away relatively young. Long live Rock N' Roll! Cheers y'all!

Fun Facts on the theater in which this was filmed: - had it's own in house light show run by former Fillmore East crew under Bill Graham - became the new Fillmore after the Fillmore East and West closed - was a former Vaudeville theater and it had perfect acoustical properties due to grading of floors and walls, and the batting on the walls (this is why acts like Springsteen's Sept 1978 three night stand are legendary bootlegs today: the sounds the place allowed were unmatched for power and ferocity) - after Vaudeville era, and before the 1970's when it became a music venue, it was a porn theater, showing adult films to men who would literally sit in there all day and .... yes, that. True. Very historic venue for Rock and Roll. Everyone played the Capital from Prince to Springsteen to Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Dead and The Clash. amazing place

Can some professional biographer out there please take on he project of giving us all the details of Dickie Betts life while he's still with us to work with? We fans so far have been left to gather up random references from books and articles not featuring him. That Dan Rather interview was a sad disappointment. We do know he played as a child with his family of violinists and pickers. And he played and did dance moves in teen circus bands. He has mentioned his earliest music influences of Western swing, blues, his love of plaing with the jazz/country violinist Val Clements, his love of the Jefferson Airplane and of Miles and Bird once Jaimoe hipped him. We also know Berry Oakley played with him and loved his work before he dragged him along to join Duane Allman's developing band. By that times he'd already married his first wife, a Native American whose name translated to Blue Sky. And that he had to be pushed at first to play that song he'd written for her after they broke up. There's no denying that Duane had him play toe-to-to with him as a complementary equal, and that he stepped up to lead ABB after Duane died. Galladrielle points out not unkindly that Dickie was a man of many moods, we can easily surmise also from his famous temper. Anyone want to wager that his bandaged is the result of having punched someone out earlier? We know that he showed early aptitude for writing complex compositions like Liz Reed (much praised by Duane). That he was a canvas painter and could build houses (which he did with his father on a piece of land they owned). He doesn't explain much about his being "fired" by his band mates, but terrible tensions had developed with Butch, and Gregg felt an intense rivalry prior to ending their association y fax. g Dickie
@yvonnelaurenty64273 жыл бұрын
More... Dickie had composed ABB's only top 10 single Ramblin' Man, as well as gems like High Falls, the Indian inspired seven Turns; and brought Dan Toler along with him into his Great Southern band after leaving ABB. that he replaced Dan after he died with his own son Duane Betts. What's more, although he'd successfully sued ABB after he was let go, he did attend Greg's funeral. And had called Gregg every day for months before Gregg died, but refused to reveal what was said because it was "personal," saying he had chosen to talk to Gregg "just to make his day a little better." Dickie himself has survived a bad accident here in his 70s. He sustained a cracked cranium when giving his lab a bath and being tugged by the dog onto his steps head first. Finally, he has tried unsuccessfully to return to the stage, but has lived long enough to see his son join Greg he's son Devon, and Berry Oakley Jr. in a Wells received Allman Betts Band. Again, will some writer pull all this and more into a coherent life story for this astounding guitarist? We fans will eat it up.

@@Cpayne30 Yes, I've read GA's so many times. It's actually on my nightstand. GA & ABB are my all time favorites still to this day. @@sblair6362 Dickey could be very demanding of his bassists, and Gregg had in mind what he wanted to hear on his songs too. Goldflies did a good job for sure. Shame that the keyboards kind of hide his playing on Reach for the Sky and Brothers of the Road. He's loud and clear on Enlightened Rogues.

I love this video. Being in black and white gives it that “classic” look to it. This was not at a great period for the Allman Brothers as far as creating new music. (That would improve after the 80s), but these guys sure could play live. Thanks for posting this

Saw them four nights later, April 24, 1979 at The Palladium on 14th St. NYC. Great show also featuring Belushi!!

Belushi got around. Between those ABB shows he went to Toronto to introduce the Stones/New Barbarians shows on April 22nd.

I was born March 26 1979. I like to joke around about cocaine & disco being popular when I was born. It's good to see videos like this from that time period!👊🙏

I heard John Belushi 1:57:25 did shows with the Allman Brothers, but this was the first time I got to see it. He just walks on stage and does one song. Wow, 2:02 WNEW FM was the only station I listened to. Funny to hear Alison Steel "The Night Bird." call the male announcer at Scott by mistake. God, did I receive a great history lesson in Rock and Roll thanks to that station. They played entire albums during the night. The funny thing is she had no background in Rock and was learning along with her audience. I just read she was almost my mother's age and she died at the age of 58 in 1995 of stomach cancer. Very sad to hear and I am 57! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alison_Steele RIP

Dan Toler was a player who really expressed himself with originality. I definitely rate him above Warren Haynes.

Oh hell yes‼️way above‼️ Dangerous Dan Toler could've taught ole Warren a thing or two for sure🎶

Dangerous Dan, along with David Goldflies (I'm a bassist ) were underrated for sure. They never got there dues. I can't say Dan is better than Warren. Two completely different players. Plus Warren can also sing his ass off. Both are great.

Outstanding? Yes. Underrated? Without question. Rated above Warren? Uh...No.

Warren is great .... but for my taste, he is a little bit too exact (mechanical) not saying he doesn't have soul, he does..... but we are comparing some of the greatest gun slingers who ever lived......so haha that's my taste on it. They are/were all so great!
