I guess I'm braggin' but I saw Duane at Winterland, in Oct '71. Bar none, my favorite show ever. Here it is, more than 45 years later, and I still think about that show, and Duane, a lot. RIP, Duane...

Not at all. It's more a badge of honor. I saw them twice in 1970 ,the first was in Washington DC at RFK Stadium at The Berlin Airlift with a bunch of great local bands & the main act was Grand Funk. When dusk fell The Allman's hit the stage & proceeded to blow everybody's doors clean off. A few months after we saw them at American University which to my surprise is now on CD & man i never expected to hear that show again. All in all you are not bragging one bit & are as lucky as i was to have been around when the best rock & blues band began to blow roofs off & make rock history in a way that will never be repeated.

dubyaup2 In May 1970 I was a Canadian 19 year old tripping around the US ..and found myself in New Orleans for a couple of months..Saw the band opening for Pink Floyd at The Warehouse...before they had broken in the North..I stood 10 feet in front of Duane without any prior knowledge..Amazing show and now at almost 70 I look back in wonder and amazement at being present at such an an amazing musical event.

Micky Mantle ..Me too. Sitting under a big ol mossy tree , just starting to get dark. Listening to the crickets & the whipperwill ,smokin a big fat Doobie and listening to those fine young men from the south. Talking about what city , state you seen them in the early 70's..they'll never be forgotten. Their memories live & live more. One of my favorites by Greg is Desdemona.. absolutely a favorite.but can't forget Dreams.. its been 9 months since Greg passed. Can't believe its almost a year already. That Saturday I cried for hours & off and on that whole week.. I suspected Greg may have had some health issues because shows were starting to be cancelled plus his always beautiful face was starting to get a gaunt look to it. Well ,wherever he may be , I won't fly away & find me a new love.. I hope he's sitting on a rock in Colorado.or New Mexico or his beloved Peach state. Sure do miss ya , Greg.

First song I heard was Dreams. The hair on the back o' my head stood up an I ran off to the record store an bought me 'Live at the Fillmore East'. I thought 'How can this be' ? This music was from God an he had brought these individuals together an baked a very special pie.

I've been playing pro for 45 years with the biggest names in show biz and Jazz-rock. In 1970 my big brother had the Allman's first album. It had a big influence on me. In 2015 me and Gregg Allman bumped into each other in St. Augustine Florida. He was like a long lost brother. I really felt like God meant it to be. We had a great chat. I'm so glad I got to meet one of my mentors before he passed. Oh, and he begged me to buy one of his 6 B-3's. RIP Brother.

I'm much younger than the ABB, but they will always be one of my favorite groups. Gregg is one of my favorite singers and Duane will probably always be my favorite guitarist. RIP Skydog, Gregg, Berry and Butch. Sad that only Dickey and Jaimoe are left of the original members. Truly gifted musicians that sounded awesome live, a rare thing indeed these days.

Duane, Gregg, and ABB will live on for eternity in music played by all of the musicians and people they inspired and have yet to inspire along the way. Me personally, I was inspired by Duane at 38 years old to learn to play guitar last year. So I bought myself a guitar for Christmas 2019. I told myself before I bought it that I won't be one of those people. I won't ever quit learning & playing guitar. 10 months later and I haven't quit and won't ever quit. And it was purely because I was inspired by Duane Allman, the man my daddy got my middle name from. I was raised on Allman Brothers from the womb. My dad instilled in me a love of ABB and good music in general and I'm so glad he did. As a kid, I hated when he listened to "oldies" and I hated my middle name, too. I mean, it was 1990, I was 9 yrs old, and the internet didn't exist yet. I didn't understand the importance of the name Duane Allman back then(he really wasn't getting the recognition he does now, either, I believe 🤷‍♂️). I used to hear it all the time, too. "you know your momma let me name you after the best guitar player ever, Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band". I'd always say "Yes, Daddy. I know " 😆 Back then, it meant nothing to me. Today, it means everything to me. I couldn't be prouder of the fact that I'm named after & share middle names with, IMHO, the greatest guitar player to ever walk this Earth, Howard Duane Allman. The world lost a legend, a Brother, a son, a father, a friend 49 years ago today, 29 Oct 2020. How could anyone have known the impact he would have on history? ABB will live on in everyone they they inspired to play their music, whether by stereo or instrument. They'll live on in all of the people whose playing they influenced(like me I was inspired to learn to play by Duane and he's my biggest influence). All I can say is thanks, Skydog! Rest in Eternal Peace, Brother!

Hearing Butch speak of Duane's death and how hard it was for them brought a lump to my throat.. I'm sure it was hard as hell to continue. I heard Greg say in a different interview that Berry went down hill and quick after Duane's death. Said he was drugging and drinking a lot . After Berry died , Greg said it was almost a relief that Berry was gone. They all seen how depressed & fucked up he'd stayed since Duanes death . Greg said after his death that they just had to keep goin.

I figured out why Berry went downhill the way he did after Duane's death. I posted it on the HIttin' the Web forum but people there didn't want to believe me but I know I am right. Here it is: Guilt. Who's birthday was it that day? Linda Oakley's. Where was Duane headed when he had the accident? To his place to get the gifts for Linda Oakley. You see, I realized that Berry must have felt so much guilt that he spiraled downhill really fast. He was so much more depressed than even Gregg was. Why? Because he felt guilty. He felt that it was his fault since Duane died as a result of going back to his(Duane's) place to get the gifts for His (Berry's) wife. Maybe it was even Berry's idea to keep the gifts at Duane's apartment(This I don't know. Just thinking). I can't think of any other reason for Berry to get into such a deep depression. In Gregg's book, "My Cross To Bear", he writes that witnesses said Berry didn't try to avoid the bus. Gregg even writes that he didn't Berry wanted to die, he just didn't want to live anymore. So, there you have it. I, truly, believe that Berry was racked with guilt and could not handle life any longer.

I think that i told this in an ABB discussion before, but i'll repeat it. One of the band's roadies, Red Dog, said he was sitting in front of his house talking to Duane. To paraphrase, Duane said, "we're on our way, there's no stopping us now. No more beans for breakfast." This was when the Fillmore East album was just starting to climb up the charts. The next day, Duane had his motorcycle accident. What a sad irony.

@@robertstroud7561 I worked at Capricorn Studio so I knew Butch awhile. I stayed at his trailer house out at their "farm" in Juliette, with his ex brother in law. Butch was impulsive kind of person. He blew several holes in that trailer house roof with a shotgun. Of course that was years ago. News media didnt offer up any reasons, really, why Butch did that. I didnt even hear any rumors. Well, the band was done and retired, Gregg was on his last few months and Butch was so dedicated to Duane and being impulsive, that perhaps Butch just wanted to go to the other side to see if there was an other side and to finally see if Duane was there and waiting. It could have been a "whim" on his part, that he did not think through, and probably regretted his actions a few seconds too late. But who knows? Butch wasnt the type of person to do something like that, I dont think. But between Duane and Gregg I do think he was all tore up about them and Butch was also probably at odds with himself and the future now that the band was done. Practically his whole life was with the Brothers, so maybe he felt "done" too. Well, he was a head strong dude also. Still sad. Things just aren't the same and perhaps we'll never know. Miss ya Butch!

THANK YOU SO much! I mean that! I was hoping some asshole didn't tell me how right I was! I mean, through the course of the tons and tons of covers The Brothers did they always gave ALL credit to the creator of the music. They never tried to use their words to someone else's music or vice versa. Because of The Allman Brothers I grew up exploring jazz, country, I mean, if you ask me to pick between George Clinton or John Prine or you'll shoot me, you gotta shoot me cause they both move my spirit and soul? Not saying it's so but being a Brothers fan growing up sure did open my mind up to explore all things in life before criticizing. kid rock? Duane Allman's dead body is more creative musically than his is alive. PS Frank Zappa got me through my teenage years! Peace. Forgot to mention, please don raz on Tiny Tim! Thank you for telling me more, but I'll probably pass on the Tiny Tim.😛🤡 But Zappa- " Why Does it Hurt When I Pee?" Yeah I know Zappa. I'll do the shrooms and watch him. Jolene, The ONLY thing kid rock is talented at is stealing other people's work and making up nursery rhymes for the ebonically challenged people of the world. I got turned on to the Brothers in 1977. I was nine. Parents had a copy of Win lose or Draw. That was a long time ago. Of al the things in my life that have changed the one consistency is the Brothers. It is a religion to me. It is WAY beyond music it is about connecting at a gut level. A real, humble, level. I went to Macon in 1997 to send 2 weeks I spent about a year. Why? Of all the Pulp Fiction shit that has happened in my life Macon Ga is the spot I discovered there is a God. The Allman Brothers are so much more than music. These hippies have saved my life, helped me through life, and will be The Good Book for me till I pass on. Good music? Good music that gets any air time quit being made in the 70s. The eighties to now is GARBAGE. I' not talking about real musicians people like Gary Clark Jr. I'm talking the garbage mass media shoves down people's throats and they gobble it up like it's something. You know what we have more than music? We have an understanding of human emotions and we care about people other than ourselves. How do I know that? You don't listen to music, you listen to The Gospel. I gotta sign off so I can squeeze a couple of tupacs and biggies out of my kid rock@@joleneloveland2942

@@joleneloveland2942 Frank Zappa was despised by the entire civilized world. Why? Because he was a genius who refused to be a plastic, fake, piece of shit. I am SO grateful I had The Brothers and Zappa to grow up on as opposed to computers making music and retards making up nursery rhymes to fake, Japanese, beats. As for me and mine, we'll take the Dynamo Hum and leave the yellow snow for the educated people. To bring it all back to the center and keep the balance we'll keep longing for the days spent at High Falls. Which, by the way, is a Dickey MASTERPIECE.
