I put in the order years ago, this WILL be played at my funeral, in it's entirety. Sure, some of the people will probably get up and leave before it's over, but the ones remaining will be the ones that really knew me, understood me and loved me. That's when the party will start... whiskey for everybody!!!

Skydog I also am a huge fan of this song. This song brings the whole spectrum of feelings for me. Triumphs, losses they’re all here wrapped up in this song. Duane’s emotions are so powerful, so strong. Glad to here I’m not alone with this song. Love the live version of Blue Sky and all the live Dreams out there as well.

Great minds think alike! My son is Dreams (I'll Never See). But he'll, I might as well get the whole Fillmore East and the live songs from Eat APeach, too. Everybody here knows of my love for the Allmans. I even went to The Big House in Macon. But, hey, we're all brothers! 😀

Tom Dowd was a legendary producer for Atlantic Records for decades; recorded artists from Coltrane to Charles, and was the guy who recorded them at Fillmore East. He said the Allmans had enough musicianship and musical empathy that, in his words, 'dickie could be playing in 4/4 time, Jaimoe could be in 3/4, Butch could be in 6/8, and it would swing'. Just about the highest compliment one could pay to a group. And these guys deserved every bit of it. Thanks for doing this. It's much appreciated.

This song is a masterpiece. Duane’s slide lead with Dickey right there after the drum solo is off the effing charts. 40 years and I still get the chills.
@KeyWestChrisRehm

Actually, Duane only played slide on the first part after the drum solo. Up to the drum solo he was playing lead guitar, along with Dickey, After the first section following the drum solo section, he was back to playing lead. On an interesting note, on this song and Dreams are the only songs that he played in standard tuning for slide guitar. Everything else was in Open E when he played slide.

From "Rock 'n' Blues Stew II: "The journey starts off with Duane and Dickey trading off each other’s lead, then the band takes the theme from a boiling cauldron of layered jazz. Berry shows his prime by rumbling behind the two guitarists and Duane grabs a short, direct solo, opening the way for Gregg to run for daylight. Berry casts out fountains of hot bass lava, and the drummers fill in with flourishes and ruffs to sheetrock the room with sound and action. Dickey follows with a truly explosive solo that just blows the lid off, and Berry burns everything in his path. The demolition team of Jaimoe and Butch then take over, with Butch on first solo, slugging and pounding out a furious snare and tom-tom pattern. Jaimoe takes a compact ride on snare and kick drum, and the stage is set for Berry’s twisting solo. Oakley thunders out lead bass lines, takes the “Mountain” theme for some jagged runs, and the drummers prod him along like a jockey passing the clubhouse turn. The band then follows Duane’s signal, and everyone hangs on while he takes the most meaningful, inspired solo of his too-brief career. His poetic slide swoops and hovers like an ocean bird and the rest of the band gather to watch and listen. It ends (momentarily) as everyone rides their chords over the waterfall’s edge of sound. Duane then prophetically leads the band through “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” the “Mountain” theme is recaptured and brought out again, and the band again feasts joyfully. At the song’s dynamic ending, a complete recapitulation is offered, and a celebration is unleashed. Duane salutes his band with a breathless announcement of thanks, and it’s time to go home."

I'm sure you realize this as on 2 sides of the "Eat a Peach" record. The one after Duane died.....i mentioned this was a continuation of the ending of Whipping Post from live at the Fillmore...At the end of that jam Butch Trucks is playing a Tympani, and you hear that at the start of Mountain Jam here....Crazy to think it was a little more than 55 minutes of straight music.

Bryan S. And Whipping Post was a continuation of You Don’t Love Me. You can hear it start up at the ending of this. They played for about and hour and 15 mins for the encore. What band ever did this?

To answer your question, it is Duane's solo right after the twinning guitars before the organ break. After the organ break is Dicky's solo. On the second album, they're hard to distinguish who's plying which guitar part, except for the slide break. The both play at the same time in many places. Dicky has the cleaner, "tin" sound. Also, it IS a long song. They break it up so the instruments except for drums gets a break to catch his breath. I can play both parts of this song. When playing, you lose track of time. I've played for a long time before and I didn't even know it. In the zone. What a great place to be. It is a mash up of Donovan and Jimi Hendrix. And remember, Berry had been playing bass for 24 minutes of Whipping Post and then went right in to Mountain Jam for 30 minutes or so. Berry really had some chops! Donovan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opyvoWyabK1-q6M Hendrix: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKXWZGZojpKhr8k If you're going to react to Johnny Winter, I highly recommend the "captured live" album. The best song is a Bob Dylan song Highway 61. He tears it up! But I like them all. Greg in TN 😀

It was not the Gregg and Duane show or the Duane and Dickie show, it was The Berry Oakley, Dickie Betts , Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson, Gregg Allman and Duane Allman show. It was The Allman Brothers Band! Everybody in the band was an important part in creating the music. There were no sidemen.They all played lead and sounded great.

Thank you for you honest and thoughfully moving reaction!!! EXCELLENT!...50 years since I saw first them. In Comparison stacked against every band I've ever listened to ... No Comparison!!! While they were all together, The WORLD MISSED OUT ON arguably the finest group, musicians and talent ever assembled. Not until Dickey's, softer~Blue Sky and Ramblin' Man did they get some crossover to A.M. radio and more general popularity. Still, I'm thankful that some new ears are hearing what we have known for those 50 years. Thank you to them and my Southern (Alabama) Girlfriend at the time, Kayren, who said to me that she wouldn't kiss me until I listened to THE ALLMAN BROTHERS! WHAT A KISS!

They had more than passion. They, with their music, had found a “religion” as they described it and playing for extended periods of time was pure joy to them. They were on a mission to play that ultimate music which they called “hittin the note.” Magic maybe will hit a band, if they’re lucky, once in their career. It did the last night of the Fillmore that was open to the public. Legendary concert which sadly was never recorded. Those there witnessed history they can only relate in their own words.

Love the "anthemic" passage near the end of "MJ" (starts at 29:00 of Soul Train Bro's video here). It's almost a lullaby at first, then adds some heft with everybody joining in and the song grows joyous, almost a church hymn, then a return to the original theme and from there to a rousing exit. ABB does work with the songs "Stormy Monday" and "You Don't Love Me." Other soaring Sky Dog guitar work on "Loan Me A Dime" (with Boz Scaggs) and (of course) "Layla" and "Little Wing."

I remember these kind of jam songs from all kinds of live rock bands when I was a kid and just dancing on the grass. Good times. Also went to a concert in Spring Hill Florida called The Lakehouse Blues Fest. Right on the edge of a huge beautiful non man made lake. One of the most fun nights of my life. Dancing and kicking back in a lawn chair with the cool night air coming off the lake on a hot summer Florida night.

Hey, I stumbled upon your channel today, and have really enjoyed. Allman Brothers and Little Feat are my two bands from my teenage years. I have a request: You seem to enjoy doing album sides and exploring this era (the way it should be). For a total change of pace, I'd like to see you do a John Prine reaction. Do either side, or both, of his eponymous first album. Not rock, not blues, not even really country. Kind of a folky, latter-day Dylan, with antiwar stuff, love songs, lost love songs, and other stuff I can't describe. The most outstanding songwriter of his generation, IMHO. Passed away earlier this year due to covid.

Jerry Garcia's solo album ain't too shabby at all. Give it a lesson and see what you think! No extended songs, just something he felt he had to do. Also, he sometimes played pedal steel on a few other bands' albums, like New Riders of the Purple Sage first album (cover: in a circle design, a cactus with "NRPS" in clouds in the sky) -- the album with "Glendale Train" and "Henry" on it.
