It would be sad for Uma. Daniel and Kika have put so much of themselves in it. Plus, they may lose their soul as "sales reps". I used to follow an Australian guy and his Brit (?) GF sailing a regular single hull sailboat. The've cut a deal with a major French maker of luxury $1 million + catamarans. Their job was obviously to tour Southern islands to party and show their beautiful ship to well heeled people. They became so shallow and brainless. Dan and Kika deserve better...

Martin Armstrong M I think this is definitely the future of sailing, my only concern is that the twin sail drives are very exposed to damage or debris in the water. On a traditional single sail drive the keel offers some protection for the drive. In this case both drives are very exposed. I would think a protective skeg in front of each drive would go a long way towards protecting the drives from debris such as fishing lines or nets etc.

A bimini, lots of solar panels and an arch/davit system where you can access the stern by easily going under the dinghy when it is raised. This configuration would be great for med-style docking. More solar needed for electric cooking. I believe there is a shift away from propane? Wonderful boat. The motors sound like George Jetson's space car! I hope they keep Uma. I really enjoy the live/redesign/rebuild process that they go through and the boat looks great! However, sooner or later they will probably out-grow it. That said, the twin electric motor setup seems to be an absolute game changer, maybe someday they will use it. Differential thrust makes low speed maneuvering easy instead of a tricky almost arcane art. And having higher power regen available, not only provides more electrical power, it can be used almost instantly to help maintain control while you are reefing or adjusting your sails and rig.

Not only that, they are already fit nautic interior acrhitects. I like what they did inside Uma very much. I wonder what a carte blanche for Kika nad Dan inside such a wast hull would bring. The boat in the video was clean, but generic and plasticky inside, maybe too much "charter style". I get it, a lot of yachts in Croatia are sold to be chartered and need to be set up in a manner to be easily and quickly cleaned, friendly to occasional sailors and children. But that brings a certain sterile flair to their interiors. I'd like to see how it would look if it were set up by sailors, who are also architects.

Pretty much all the components in an electric system, you already have in a diesel. Battery, cable, switch, electric motor (alternator/starter/water pump), just without the diesel and fuel tank/lines. The prop and saildrive are virtually the same. If you know how an alternator works, you already have all the knowledge you need to troubleshoot an electric set up.

@@skaraborgcraft Electric motors have about 3 moving parts (Apart from the prop drive), that should tell you a lot. Personally, I'm not what you'd call a tree hugger / militant person on all things green (I have a V8 powered race car) but: From my practical experience on the electric car I owned for 3 years and put 45,000 miles on here's the sum total maintenance: A set of tires. Period. I also have a 36 FT C&C with a diesel on it that I despise. Even though it's been pretty reliable: It's smoky, loud, and it vibrates. Outside from the unpleasant operation: It's but a pinhole in the fuel lines away from stopping or fouled water intake / failed water impeller away from overheating at any time. In a way: It's also made me a better sailor because I freakin' hate running it. :-)
@skaraborgcraft
@skaraborgcraft 3 жыл бұрын
@@francoisrivard893 I dont dispute some of the advantages, the re-generation is an absolute bonus. Its not so much the motors themselves, rather the components. A friend had trouble with speed controllers and other "shorts" after a few years in service, and fault finding can be a long task with some parts needing factory replacement rather than being servicable/fixable onboard. Im not anti, i did look at a hybrid system but the cost for that particular project doubled the cost of the propulsion system. Tech moves fast, I certainly would not dismiss it at some further point. I have a 40 year old Perkins diesel that is still an instant starter.

You guys are the best! In what is becoming a crowded yachty field your film making and scripting has risen to the very top. I spent two weeks in the Bahamas ten years ago on what was one of the earliest electric drive sailboats. It was 44' and only about 10,000#. I recall seeing 12.9 knots under all plain sail in conditions about like those in day 2 of your vid. Loved "sailing" away from anchorages with no sail hoisted and no wind. Loved watching our neighbors in the anchorage scratch their heads! The boat I was on had a large fixed three blade prop that was great on regen and for motorsailing. In variable winds we set the controller at a level where it produced just enough energy to provide a little drive in the lulls to maintain speed, and produce a little regen in the puffs. I get the twin engine arrangement. It will sell a lot of boats to modern sailors who never learned to dock properly just like those Beneteau Sense customers. I only see two downsides-- extra cost and vulnerability to drift and lobster pots. I take it that the Salona wasn't meant for Alaska floating logs.LOL My other comment applies to almost all "modern" sailboats. Do you really want to cross the North Atlantic while being thrown against those knife-edge corners in the galley and head? Especially since "interior desiccator" architects eliminate handholds to generate a cleaner and modern look. I have a large bone spur on one elbow courtesy of a 15' flight across the salon of a big Oyster on a late fall delivery to Bermuda.

Sailors not diesel mechanics! That is the best catch phrase for electric sailing ever. Well done!
@thomask5295
@thomask5295 3 жыл бұрын
Please, don't get me wrong, I like electric motors. But TBH, this phrase could work both ways. I could say "Sailors, not power harvesters". This phrase tries to imply that diesel engines are constantly broken, which is not true, and that electric motors will NEVER have problems, which is also not true. But that's how marketing works. :)
@ThePenhalionsPost
@ThePenhalionsPost 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomask5295 If you have a diesel motor you will 100% need to know exactly how it works in order to fix it while away from port. You'll need to do constant maintenance on it with oil filter changes, belt changes, rebuilds, polishing diesel etc etc. An electric motor is self contained and, aside from some basic care, is mostly a fit and forget part of the boat. Diesel is also noisy and smelly and pollutes. A diesel boat usually generates power by running the engine to use the alternator to charge the batteries (literally harvesting power from the engine). So even if you are sailing you would need to motor sail to recharge the engines or use solar or a wind generator. Electric drives will usually be paired with solar and sail drives that re-generate power by guess what...yep sailing. So the phrase I'm a sailor not a power harvester doesn't make sense given that the very act of sailing is what is recharging your electric motor batteries. The only method of powering a boat that actively requires you to harvest power by not sailing is diesel.
@thomask5295
@thomask5295 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePenhalionsPost While I do agree with you that an electric motor is pretty much maintenance-free, the same can't be said from the rest of the system. In order to work, an electric motor needs controllers, converters, chargers, batteries, etc., and those are delicate and not self-contained units. A Diesel engine I can fix with pretty much a wrench and a few basic tools and basic knowledge, while a converter needs much more sophisticated tools to fix and also a much more specific range of knowledge to do so. Besides, modern diesel engines, like EURO 6 Norm, as long as well maintained, pollute far less than ppl make it out to be. As for the harvesting part, yes I love to sail, but I like to sail because I WANT to sail and WHEN I want to sail, not just because I NEED to sail NOW or my batteries will dry out. Solar and wind can be applied to both propulsion methods, so if you are going to say you don't need to sail, I'm telling you that I don't need to run my diesel engine as well. :p Please, don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against electric boats. I think it's a great idea and would love to have one. What bothers me is that ppl try to picture diesel as hell and electric as heaven. IMHO It's not quite like that. Every coin has two sides. :)
@G11713
@G11713 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomask5295 Lithium ion batteries don't dry out. They are completely maintenance free requiring perhaps balancing that a suitable charger should automatically provide and checking that the cables haven't become loose. Controllers on the other hand are the equivalent of chart plotters and other electronics on board. If these systems are properly shielded and grounded, which more feasible for them to be than most other electronics, you have a turnkey perpetual system, I would think. Note, lithium batteries currently do have a lifespan of ten years or so though.
@ThePenhalionsPost
@ThePenhalionsPost 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomask5295 Um the converters are needed for any power system whether it it diesel or solar charged or both. What do you think the charge from the diesel engine alternator goes through. I'm puzzled as to how you think a system with electric motors and solar, wind and sail drive regen is more complex than a system that replaces the electric engines with a diesel one. The diesel motor is significantly more complex and costly to maintain. If you have a chance look at an anchor electric motor. The propulsion drives are slightly more complex than that and only due to needing to drive the propeller shaft. I think you've got a huge misconception of the complexity of electric vs diesel.

Brilliant ideas working! We have lived off grid for 15 years now in a house/hotel but we still need the diesel back up for guests to use their hair dryers etc in the evenings. Great to see the propellors recharge the batteries so you are not just reliant on the wind and sun, you just need some wind to sail. Definitely interested in this yachts systems once we get to get a boat. Excellent review.
