Note: "Renault Sport", the former Sport and "Motorsports branch of Renault, was born in the mid-1990s by merging what was left of Gordini and ... Alpine. The parent company of Renault Sport for the motor racing branch was the historic Alpine factory in Dieppe! So that the Sport and Motorsport branch of Renault becomes Alpine again after having recreated and relaunched this brand, is not shocking, it's a return to the source quite simply.

Thank you! The Veloce’s extra power, mechanical limited slip diff’ and more aggressive geometry definitely make it feel racier on the limit. But the Alpine is ever so slightly more comfortable, so it’s going to the better car for urban drivers. That said, the Alfa really is something at speed, so perhaps you’d let it off for being a bit less city friendly 😜

Just as importantly how does the A290 compare with the Mini SE which in terms of size, performance and price is much closer. They are probably following the same philosophy of wanting to put fun ahead of outright speed. Is the A290’s handling a match for the Go Kart Mini? Twin test needed in due course.

We wondered how long it'd take for someone to notice! 😆We just used this plug to film our segment as it was out of the way and not in use. Rest assured we did charge the car correctly later.

I don't understand why Alpine would deliberately remove cup holders from its cars, given that this is clearly a daily driver and not a sports car, and that French manufacturers have been criticized in the past for not offering cup holders. It's like they never learn and always make the same mistake!

If you want to drive, why worry about cup holders. You might also need a mirror to fix your makeup? A driver's car must NOT have insignificant tinkles. Man up. 🙂

Would you still prefer a Golf GTI if you were based in a city, Niko? For some the EV advantages (eg. no Congestion Charge in some cities) might make it useful! ⚡️

The Golf GTI is brilliant and way more practical, sure. But it doesn't have the same exceptional ride quality as this A290. Not to mention, the UX is enough reason to choose this over the MK8/8.5 especially /Jamil

Mud. Get a BMW F20/F21 M135i or M140i. A 3 litre inline 6cyl turbo, rear wheels drive or 4wd. Small car, big engine. Easy 400hp with bolt on's. Far cooler, much cheaper.

No. Buy a good EV, then you have fun driving it, drive it normally more easily than an ICE, and know that you aren’t polluting the environment or your kids' air at the same time. Win win.
