It's a great speech, but in the end it's just a statement of the bleedin obvious. Who actually watches BBC News, and is in their right mind ? I think I watched it online once a few years back. I stopped after 4 minutes or so. I felt physically sick. A spokesperson for North Korean state broadcasting would probably say : "I know we're a bit biased. But at least we're not the BBC. And we don't employ Hue Edwards either." Mainstream broadcasting is just a natural graduation for the children of posh middle class ex Oxbridge hacks who live in Hampstead and need to get jobs for Marcus and Clarissa. Even Carole Vorderman herself wouldn't have got into tv if she hadn't gone to Cambridge. Then there's the "press." The only "serious" paper not behind a pay wall is the Guardian. And that's staffed almost exclusively by middle class Oxbridge graduates. I read it. Which is to say these days I hardly ever read it, but just scan the headlines. There's much better news on KZbin. Phil Moorhouse on A Different Bias is my go to for UK politics. Even Marina Hyde is no longer very funny. YT has brilliant young political satirists. And finally I must say that Carole Vorderman is damn hot for a 63 year old. Tight leather trousers. Sheesh. She actually carries it. 🙂🫠

She came from the bottom of the pyramid, the lowest run on the ladder and has, with a cheeky mum, hard work and a bit off luck and fortunate timing, managed what fewer and fewer of us, the hoi polloi, are able to do. The right school, background and whatever . She's been successful, worked in areas such as TV, Media, News, Politics, Maths & Engineering but also everyday jobs just to survive, hand to mouth, one pay packet to the next... When talking about media folk and politicians I'm afraid it's not just a lack of understanding of anything outside their bubble. Both these industries should be producing people with curiosity who have a desire to fill any gaps in their knowledge and distribute what they've learned to those whose knowledge may also be lacking. Instead, what has been demonstrated for far too many years is the way in which the general population is viewed by these people. No curiosity, just nose-in-the-air disinterest and contempt, with especial venom reserved for anyone who challenges the false reality of their comfortable bubbles of delusion. The result, inevitably, is that the general population end by holding politicians and journalists in contempt. An examination of the behaviour of both areas would make a pretty good documentary on how to lose an audience.

Many people assumed Carol Vorderman would disappear into obscurity after her stint on Countdown finished! How wrong they were! I would argue that although she built a hugely respected career from her time as "Queen of Channel 4", I would suggest her post-Countdown career has almost eclipsed that achievement? Her status has morphed from celebrity to "public figurehead", rather like the rather shapely carvings on the bows of British sailing ships of old! Her presence on our screens (and radio!) tends to evoke similar feelings of pride and reverence? As a fellow "thinker" and "wordsmith", I could not think of a more delightful way to spend a weekend (or three?) identifying problems and finding solutions, with Carol, Stephen Fry, and a few "experts" in economics, international affairs, and law-making, to facilitate a transition to a more egalitarian NATION, that can LEAD BY EXAMPLE, the entire world! I would also love to discuss setting up a national and local organisation that promotes "public involvement" and understanding of human problems, and that can collect/collate SOLLUTIONS to those problems to be debated NATIONALY in front of a "primetime" TV audience! A bit like "Question Time" but without political polarisation, from the guests OR the "audience". This programme would span 2-3 hours per week, backed up by a "catch-up service" to keep the continuity, OR make the debates a live and interactive "event" on a Sunday night! These monthly "events" would take a major problem facing the nation, and attempt to find a single solution, (maybe with a Plan B" ) that can be presented to the government as a WORKING SOLUTION, "oven ready" as an infamous ex-PM once said? After 12 months of programmes, we can examine how those solutions might have worked, through examination of computer SIMULATIONS or "gaming theory"! Overall, this experiment would illustrate to the British people, 1 - How to identify problems in our society and how to find solutions, 2- the programmes would also illustrate how one problem OR IT'S SOLUTION, can (and often does!) impact on other issues and sections of society! 3- This series of programmes should also EDUCATE viewers in THINKING CRITICALLY and objectively, and most importantly to PROMOTE SELFLESSNESS and PUBLIC SERVICE! These are qualities seriously lacking in today's society, and those who govern and administer it!

I agree with everything Carol said. However given that the speech was in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Nowhere does she mention Scotland. England and it's regions yes, with one reference to Wales. In the current Scottish political climate all of these problems are present. The London centric media. The disconnect bubble with ordinary Scots. The BBCSCOTLAND platforming unionist politicians. Whilst interrogating and interrupting Scottish government spokespeople. Newspaper reviews of the most anti Scottish papers. With neither critical analysis, nor any real evidence to justify their opinion. Around 50% of Scots feel the print and broadcast media. Have little positive relevance. But in addition have a deliberately negative attitude to Scots and Scotland. The loss of editorial control and balance stems back to 2014. When the BBC hosted discussions on the referendum. These "shows" would feature 3 unionist representatives (Conservative, Labour and Libdem) but only 1 (SNP). This despite there already being two campaigns (NO and YES). So much for balance. Both of these largely grassroots organisations were ignored. I'm only sorry Carol was not apparently aware of this.
