The Alternative MacTaggart: Rose Ayling-Ellis | Edinburgh TV Festival 2022

Launched in 1997, the annual Alternative MacTaggart provokes debate in the industry from different viewpoints. This year actress, BSL campaigner and Strictly winner Rose Ayling-Ellis will offer her perspective on the stark realities of life as a Deaf person working in television. Via a 30-minute address and an interview with Afua Hirsch, Rose will offer sobering insights into the prejudice she has faced, and offer simple solutions to change our collective mindset around the representation of the Deaf community.

So grateful for the day the BBC paired you with Giovanni Pernice on Strictly Come Dancing, inspiring many deaf people (myself half deaf included) of all ages to be the change we want in our world. I've just been awarded BSL Level 1 and am booked on the next course so that I am better aware and able to work with and for the Deaf Community in my script-writing for stage.

Rose is a real change catalyst - but, if she is to succeed, it is up to all of us to contribute as best we can to that change. Not only those that hold 'the power' but also us, the disabled, the deaf, the disadvantaged. How often do we accept the status quo and not confront? It is up to us all to gently open eyes and minds to the impact of exclusion.
