I’m surprised I don’t see comments praising the high school girl! For being much younger and a current student who is affected by the things being discussed/decisions adults make around/for her education, she was very well spoken and had great comments contributing to the conversation! ...Like the bereft vermin saying "the British ended slavery", like the enslaved people didn't revolt and free themselves, they kept revolting, fighting back the colonisers ( the British, French, Spanish, Dutch etc). The African-Haitian people had just defeated the colonisers, which helped in forcing the British to sign papers, largely because the British are sneaky and wanted to pay themselves, as they made sure they paid the enslavers reparations and not the once enslaved (sickeningly, African-Haitians and Black British people for e.g were forced to pay the enslavers reparations and not the other way around for their enslavement). Also, since those papers were signed, the British and the French and virtually all the coloniser nations, have used neo colonialist tactics to keep the once enslaved Black nations oppressed, like in places like the Caribbean, where even the British monarchy is still the head of state, once enslaved nations to this day, their head of office still a British coloniser.

I loved how respectful everyone was even though there was clearly tension in the room. As someone who was homeschooled, I felt very prepared for the real world because I wasn’t swayed in my beliefs. I had a strong foundation so when I was faced with the world, I was able to critically examine what others were saying was true. I was apart of a collaborative homeschooling setting where I didn’t just have my mom teaching me but other mothers teaching me and my friends which allowed for a community and multiple perspectives. I think settings like co-ops, charter schools, and parents setting up classes for other students out of their homes are great ways to allow for students to interact with different communities but also allow for there to be immense choice for parents. Homeschooling can be made accessible but we need to create communities if we want to make that happen.

I generally prefer state schools which are public schools to USA but in UK public schools are a type of private schools. There’s not really a homeschool system in my country. People generally dislike school home schools because unfortunately in most cases a single parent like their mum & dad. Only gives there opinions of things. When they need multiple opinions & not just what their parents believe. Like general schools tho, home schools need to improve along with system of eduction, however the way you have it homeschool. Is a more modern way of home schooling. Even tho you’re not necessary going to change my mind. I still believe a national curriculum is needed tho but it has to include homeschooling as well. All religions & non religious beliefs should be taught regardless of people opinions or beliefs of it. My view is single sex schools shouldn’t exist as it doesn’t prepare them for work or life because they are always see another sexes outside the school. I believe holistic approach is best way to teach.

The real problem is that parents aren’t disciplining their bad, spoiled kids and encouraging them to do better academically, so they hold all the other good students back (due to limited resources and time). I was the quiet kid and I can remember many times feeling genuine sympathy for my overwhelmed teachers whenever the troubled kids wouldn’t stop being clowns and wasting everyone’s learning time. Teachers aren’t babysitters or daycare workers. It’s getting worse and worse and that’s a huge reason why many educators are quitting.

​@@quicktoreason2722no they didn't. Majority of Parents won't even show up for school planning events. To be clear, I'm only speaking about my district. Which is a bottom 10 district in the nation. And we have one of the only school boards that are actually paid. For reference they make about 30,000 a year. This year we just started talking about disassembling the school board. Our city got roughly 80 million. Parents wouldn't even show up to vote on where that money should be spent for their kids in the city. No after school programs came back. And we are closing down 11 schools. Those schools have the most IEPs and 504s. Which means next year some classrooms in the elementary schools will have 40 to 60 students in them. Not to mention the teacher shortage. There are many contributing factors. The terrible parenting is the root cause of a lot of issues in the classroom right now. We can't even get to discussing what the kids should be learning. Because it's not a learning environment anymore. I'm the parent teacher liaison for my son's school. These last two years have been very trying to say the least. (In full disclosure, my son was private schooled the majority of his life. We switched to public school because of a robotics program he loves. The program he's in at his public school still places him in a different "education system" than the rest of the school. Because it's an international program. 93% of his school academically does not qualify). My son is not a straight a student not even close. He just has parents who Ask to see his grades and make time to teach him how to study.

Parents shouldnt have to feel the need to constantly be checking on the school board to make good decisions but now with all the mess that the board has done, parents have to. While juggling to survive in this environment where both parents are required to work to make a decent living wage to even get by. most parents are working paycheque to paycheque - and now on top of that already demanding commitment they have to also baby sit the school board. The very fact that you think people are terrible parents because you have the privilege to find time to go and be more involved shows how disconnected from reality you are. Considering your kid was "private schooled" proves my point exactly. The role of teacher is a job, and everyone capable would like jobs that's secure (unless it pays really well). Abolishing unions would simply make the entire profession felt unprotected and lose a ton of members. I think you can call for adjustments in the way unions work, but abolishing is going to destroy the local education system. (I'm not in US so I don't know any further but I'm sure that prediction is a reasonably foreseeable outcome.) On the topic of parents involvement, parenting is a natural responsibility. In majority of species in the animal kingdom, the young learn to hunt, to run, to socialise from their family. They also learn values and attitudes from the same source. Children from families that values education usually out-performs the other end of the spectrum in academics and beyond curriculum achievements. Not because they are somehow more talented, but because their family have cultivated a habit of valuing and committing to learn. It has nothing to do with family income, some of the most committed parents I've known are Asian immigrants with low income jobs. Those believe education is the most reliable way to a brighter future and so they would encourage their child to commit into learning. It does not take much extra time or money to let your children know you care about their wellbeing and future. If taking 20-30 minutes a day to have chat, to let the children feel that they are loved, to help them organise their progress, to praise them for trying to improve are too much to ask for, I think they shouldn't have had any child or they deserved to be blamed as a 'terrible parent'.

I believe financial literacy should be emphasized and taught more in the US education system. Because education is about indoctrination. That's why things are set up so that the average parents are too busy with work so they can't homeschool and take control of what their kids learn/believe. So the government can take care of it and mold the kids into the perfect money making machine.

The biggest obstacle to making good financial decisions are conflicts of interest. There's a massive conflict of interest in education because teachers are usually required to have advanced degrees that come from universities that are themselves run by people with advanced university degrees. Advanced degrees, as of the last few decades, require a high amount of student debt. Financially, it makes no sense at all to take on that much debt in order to qualify for a job that pays that little, so the pool of people who teach not only tends to exclude the financially literate (or at least anyone who prioritizes financial success) but it also tends to favor going into debt and pursuing careers that make no financial sense. So I personally wouldn't trust most teachers to teach my kids financial literacy. If you hire someone to mow your lawn, and that person runs their own business, chances are high that person has a better grasp of finances than any randomly selected teacher.

I agree. I think that should be part of this discussion. As someone who had an IEP I don’t believe public school is the answer in many neighborhoods. The reason is because in many school districts without the proper staffing or great programs you are only as strong as your weakest student in those classes. I needed just a little extra time, the ability to take tests in a classroom alone and extra homework. Unfortunately they said the regular classes couldn’t accommodate that so they put me in special education classes. That held me back so much. There was no medium between the two classes and that hurt me so bad. I do understand that many schools have the resources to teach each student individually at their level, which is AMAZING. For the schools that don’t have that ability, if the parent is able to, I believe homeschooling or a private school that can accommodate is the best option. Some schools don’t even have the ability to have “special education” rooms and the children with behavioral problems get put into classrooms with the other children. I tutored in a 6th grade classroom that is like that. These children got all the attention and other children began to act out too or be stressed. The class took 20-30 minutes between subjects to calm down which means they lost vital teaching time.

This convo is civil and respectful but some of the members are so incredibly uneducated on certain topics that it's hard to understand anything from their point of view. One of the conservatives doesn't understand a lot of the things that he doesn't think should be taught in schools. This was a pretty good conversation, but I wish there was more discussion about academic performance. That is something we are struggling with as a country. The topic of education seems to always devolve into social issues. Some interesting topics would have been the role of homework and standardized testing and the issue of underperforming kids being passed in order to boost school ratings.

Me too. The conversations about gender, sexuality, and CRT are important, but I was more focused on HOW were being taught less of what we're being taught. As a high schooler that is dual enrolled with a college, I see the discrepancies within our school system, and they're failing us. They're saying that oh we need to learn how to do reading writing and arithmetic, but no one is retaining any of it. We are just doing it to get a grade or a title, and we've been gaslit, guilt tripped, and manipulated our whole lives. I really wish we could have a more organic learning experience rather than soak up material, do home work, turn assignments, then take a test. It's not working and I speak for a lot of us when I say this.

Having finished this episode I have to be honest. That was in my opinion the best and most wholesome episode I've seen so far. Different opinions, respectful conversations and conclusions at the end where everyone seem to have benefitted from the talks. @ciizar6941 I agree. This is the best VICE panel ever. It was actually balanced between left and right, which helped immensely. It really seemed like both sides agreed about what should be taught concerning race…a hopeful sign. Clearly, those on the left here don’t know how the powers that be have formulated CRT. It is extraordinarily toxic and divisive. And those on the right are just as naive, not seeing that much of the anti-CRT movement has out-and-out racist motivations. It felt like, if left to their own devices, unencumbered with their respective leadership’s manipulations, these 8 could iron out a fairly decent curriculum on racial relations. It was different on the sexual side of things. There, there was no common ground to speak of. Which is exactly what I would have expected. I don’t think there really is any genuine common ground that is discoverable. One side wants to inappropriately expose and indoctrinate kids from a very early age, and the other wants to inappropriately shelter them till they’re 35.

I am an elementary teacher in a public school. The topic of “indoctrination” really makes me frustrated. I work at an urban school in a neighborhood where students are predominantly lower income. We have a large percentage of our school below grade level and unable to read. This “indoctrination” everyone talks about is not a core issue and isn’t happening at any school in my city. Can we talk about how to help these struggling students, low attendance rates, lack of parental involvement. I teach kindergarten and over half my class is NOT prepared for school in many aspects. Parental involvement is crucial to a child’s success.

As a person of color the "indoctrination" fou feel is non existent is actually a highly effective way to enslave the minds of my people. I see people so indoctrinated that they don't know if they are a male or female, think they're American, have no knowledge of what they're nationality is and believe they are black or African American. They also after graduating can't build a house, grow food, cook, sew, not know that herbs are medicine, etc. This actually makes you dumb and cripples you. Seperation is necessary we need our own curriculum. We dont even speak our Native tongue which further pushes us away from each other instead of binding us.

I can tell you, as a person fresh out of high school, that indoctrination is a BIG ongoing issue in my old school and many in my community. Many teachers fail to keep their political beliefs and personal lives out of the classroom, and there are more teachers constantly telling or emotionally manipulating students into sharing the same political beliefs as them than those who don't. These include topics such as abortion, lgbtq+, political parties, racism, sexism, oppression, social topics, and many social events as they happened (the students' opinions on them) I had a few teachers who openly racist, mostly against white people or students who made racist comments about white people without being reprimanded or punished in any way. I had many teachers put students against each other on political and social debates where students were encouraged by teachers to manipulate and shame others into agreeing with the popular opinion or teacher's opinion. Some teachers even participated in shaming students who didn't agree with views. For instance, shaming students who didn't believe trans should be allowed in the bathroom of their choice. I whole heartedly agree with parental involvement. I tried to be meaningfully involved with my son in the public school system... Let me clarify what I mean by being "meaningfully involved": Simply asking every teacher what curriculum they are using, so I can follow along at home. When I asked this simple question, I was ignored or simply pointed to the education standards by the state. It was like these teachers had no idea what the word "curriculum" means. My local education system is not set up for meaningful parental involvement in my opinion. It's set up and encouraged for parents to join PTA, so they can chaperone dances and bring teachers muffins. Those are probably nice extras, but I'm a single mom, and I don't have time for fru-fru. I want to know the meat and potatoes of what my son is being presented with in school. It's so frustrating that this basic request is being treated like it's coming from a 3-headed alien. It's why I pulled my son out of public school despite being a product of it myself. I can imagine that teachers spend A LOT of time trying to "redirect" and address problematic behavior in the classroom. My district's approach to discipline was laughable. If the parents feel the pain of their misbehaved children (meaning they have consequences themselves) we will see behavior change and schools improve.

I really wish they would have touched on bullying and the no tolerance policy. I would have loved to hear the teachers perspectives on it. Both of my children have faced bullying and both of my children have been punished for defending themselves from bullies who were physically threatening them. The no tolerance policy needs to have some common sense. We know a 12yr old girl who was just suspended for busting a kids lip while trying to stop him from throwing her down a flight of stairs. But because she hit him she got in trouble. It's becoming a huge issues in schools and with the increase of not just school shootings but suicides among middle and high school children it really needs to be addressed.

My dad pulled well over 50-60 hours a week working anyone from 4am-3pm, sometimes earlier and/or later. My dad would have to drop me off at my grandmother's in the middle of the night so my relatives could take me to school. Aside from my dad working long hours, he immigrated here from China and only get a partial 3rd grade education. He took some adult school here in the US to learn some English so he could get by. But PTA meetings for someone like him and many parents of friends and classmates from my generation/graduating class are all in a similar situation. Going to a PTA meeting was by far a waste of time back then because they had other chores to do around the house or prepare for the next work day. Like others have mentioned, the education system is due for a revamp. Many parents now, not all, have been born and raised in the States now and can afford to do much of the things our parents wished to do. And that is similar to much of every other aspect in the US. Things we wished we could do, or wished our parents could do back then- we can do now for our next generation.

I'll say, if a child views school as a safe haven, that parent probably isn't prioritizing education planning or school choice in their plans. As someone who grew up in a toxic and abusive household and also fell through the cracks because I looked like I came from a "good" household, I think there should be time in there where kids are taught what abuse looks like, what is okay and not okay and the damaging effects of words and actions we as individuals and as groups can have on others, and what is unacceptable regardless of age or race or power dynamic. And then from there have a place for kids to find resources. The trouble with me is that I was so isolated that I had no concept of what healthy relationships should look like, and how warped my perceptions were, to even articulate that there even WAS a problem, even though my behavior/actions/grades clearly reflected that, there was never anywhere to go with those issues.

I attended 6th grade at a K-6 elementary school. The first year of sex ed was in 6th grade, the sum of it was anatomy and consent. It was during a anonymous Q&A three girls realized they were being molested and learned that keeping secrets of who is touching their bodies is damaging. I knew a lot of homeschool kids growing up and they were weird as hell, socially stunted, and missed out on so many cool opportunities. I'm sure it doesn't always happen, but often that is true. Also homeschool is an easy way for abusive parents to hide their abuse, those kids might never be around a mandated reporter. Also I'm a teacher, as is my husband and when we get homeschooled children that come to our school for the first time in their lives, they are far behind the other children. This is just my experience.

One one my biggest pet peeves with homeschooling is that most parents absolutely do not have the knowledge to teach high school level classes. I'm an engineer with a master's degree in bioengineering: I can teach my high schooler Honors class levels in both math and biology. Can I teach honors level history, chemistry, english? No. No one can boast to have advanced knowledge in all subjects enough to teach on all subjects and not harm their child's learning. Parents need to communicate with their kids at home on social issues and religious beliefs, but don't fool yourselves homeschoolers: your children do learn less than mine.

There is a reason humans gather in places of knowledge and share ideas: this is how we are wired to learn, for the most part. My experience in middle class American has shown me that not many people can successfully teach above elementary grade levels and this is a generous assumption on most people. Just this for an example: I hired a PhD candidate to tutor my son in mathematics online twice a week: he still learns better in school than with her, even though she is highly qualified. It's the setting that makes the difference and he is 15. Also, has straight As in all subject with honors classes in math, biology, honors and literature.

I am a psych major with minors in family studies and business management. My 9 year old is home schooled and is doing a 3 year course of classes on Vet Science, has put in 200 hours of volunteer work at a local animal shelter and also volunteers at a vet clinic. Assists surgeries, gives oral meds. She can do the math to determine meds based on an animal's weight and the recommendation for the med. And then physically give it to them. Including anesthesia. She is also taking a 2 year series of courses on marine biology that will culminate with a camp in another country. She has done 3 years of Spanish, as well as ASL and Latin. She has just stated volunteering reading at a toddler group. She goes to lessons on finances with a local investment banker who gives kids lessons. I do about 20 hours a week of one on one education with her outside of what I outsource. Homeschooling does not mean the parent is the only transmitter of the education. I am not a science pro and my second language is French.. Atleast not natural sciences. I don't need to be as a homeschool parent. I just need to facilitate my child's education and outsource as needed and wanted. Oh, by the way she has a 10th grade reading level at last standardized testing over the summer. If she was in public school she would be in 3rd grade. Please tell me what more she would be learning in school.

Also, you mentioned she is 9 years old and reads at a 10 grade level, which is wonderful and in line with your own education, but I respectfully doubt you would be qualified to teach 10th grade math, chemistry and physics, just as I would not be able to teach english literature. We all have our own areas of expertise and there is a limit to what a single person can do in regards to teach advanced notions. I am sure your daughter is doing wonderful now, but she does have a highly educated mother to teach her.

I think one of the main issues our society as a whole has, is that we stopped being a one income home and started having both parents away from their children all day everyday. How are we supposed to raise our children if we never get to see them. They wake up go to school early 7-8 and get home by 330-4, then most parents aren't even out of work by that time and these children have to go to after school programs or daycares and then when they finally get home its dinner, chores, and bedtime. So where is the actual time spent with our own kids? We need to stop valuing money, fame, and power and start valuing time and experiences spent with each other. Our society needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, there are more single parents then ever before, more teens and young children having babies then ever before, and more suicides due to many factors that are happening at an alarming rate!

Well, the "one income home" still means one parent doesn't get to spend time with their children, though. And without both parents' influence and guidance, the children are screwed. If we want to value spending time with children, the problem isn't "one parent staying home". The problem is corporations overworking people, taking away vacation time, and not valuing family over their own priorities. In the past, all families worked together. There was no "stay at home parent". The industrial revolution damaged the family structure. It went down to just one parent being at home. And now, no parents being at home. We need to go back to instituting family values IN GENERAL and emphasizing making time for the family while also making a living.

I think the covid lock down proved that parents are not prepared or don't want to teach their children. There were so many students who were neglected that year; teachers are now focused on recovering from a year+ loss of instruction. Home schooling requires a lot of effort and preparing... something that a large majority of parents will not do.

Part of the reason kids were stuck at home is because teachers didn't want to return. Let's not put the recovery on the parents. Many teachers checked out during the remote learning portion of COVID because they weren't prepared for something they'd never done. I remember as a child, having parents be part of the classroom a few times a year. Particularly when it came to class parties and fun events. Parents would bring goodies and gifts for us students. Some parents did this for their own children when it came to birthdays etc. Others did this for the emotional offering of support to the students in my class because they were sympathetic and empathetic of certain kids' home lives. Having healthy parent role models in the classroom is a healthy thing and I don't see a problem with it.

College twas fast ...and lots of partying, but I still graduated. I had perfect attendance in macro economics and passed that class with a D. I've since then worked for ups and fedex. My family has helped me on my journey s. Life isn't fair and education system will never be perfect, but the foundation of family is huge in a youngster s growth and maturity with ups and downs in life. I’m a teacher and a parent. While I don’t teach history, I do know both of my kids have studied Native American history in middle school. It’s also being taught with a more realistic focus on the injustices. In high school, my son has learned about the systemic racism native Americans have faced (esp. reservations). Apparently teen pregnancy didn’t exist before Cardi B. One of the biggest issues I find in these forums is the fact that so many participants are misinformed on what they’re opposing. Several people in the room didn’t know what CRT or white privilege is, so there can’t be a productive conversation about whether or not it should be taught in schools. So much time is spent arguing over the definition of the subjects, and far less time spent discussing the issue of how schools are supposed to “fix themselves” without adequate funding.

@@Thisismyhandle8383 I can honestly say, my entire life all through elementary and high school, I never had a single teacher push any sort of value.. Some would discuss their beliefs, but honestly most teachers are afraid to even speak to one side or the other on any political issue due to the fear of backlash from parents and administration. I don't think that presenting a view that is in opposition to oneself is harmful though.

Education about consent needs to start as young as possible, and for kindergartners it starts literally as simple as saying, "Your body is yours, and nobody has a right to touch you unless you tell them it's okay." And then you give them examples from an unwanted hug from a grandparent to doctors needing to tell you what they're doing and asking you before they do it to what to do if someone touches their privates. Around 6th-8th grade is when you start to get into the nuances of consent, about pressure for sex and coercive behavior to elicit a yes when you don't want to give consent. 8th-9th grade is when you get into direct examples of dubious consent like when you're under the influence, or someone using their position to manipulate you, and in today's internet about the more extreme stuff like photos and videos being leaked for revenge or social clout.

You don’t need sex Ed for that and what they are teaching and showing young kids now isn’t needed or educational. They’re not sticking to the basics of biology. You can teach kids that no one should touch their private parts and that they need to tell a trusted adult if someone is.

The problem is that you want to teach children absolute bullshit in "consent training" usually that does not represent the real world. Some of the best sex in my life has not involved anybody asking for a yes for anything, I've also said no multiple times to a sexual partnet before eventually saying yes, the sex was great. If I was a woman many "consent training" courses would say that I am a victim of rape. I am not, but the courses deliberately indoctrinate women to see themselves as victims.

When it comes to the conversation of homeschooling and how the majority of public figures like "founding fathers" were homescheeld or only went to school until third grade: an important part of the narrative that was left out was how nascent pubic education is and the requirements that you send your children to school and don't just assimilate them into the workforce. The history of public education is fresh and important to learn, esepically currently when there seems to be an intense dismantling of the public education sphere. We don't tell criminals that they get to grow and explore illegal behavior so they can be an individual and the legal system just takes a step back..no.....the boundaries of the law are already set and they abide or receive the consequences. I'll be the same way with my children. Their individual self is not more important than the moral and ethical boundaries that were laid out for them before they were born or were developed to make their lives more profitable in the long run. Those boundaries are there for a reason, because they're effective. We don't tell kids not to smoke cigarettes because we hate them. But because it can potentially spare them from cancer and respiratory issues.

These have been a great series of conversations lately Vice, so thanks. But I can't believe the public education funding model wasn't brought up at all. As an Australian, it baffles me how Americans think it's okay for schools to be funded by the local areas taxes only. A system that reinforces the poverty divide and creates the bad and unsafe schools everybody was talking about avoiding. The funding should be state wide, equally funded on a per student basis. $X for every student, no matter the earning capacity of the area around the school. Then, start paying your teachers properly.

@@SaraSmilesandCreates baased on what I've read about school voucers, not similar at all. Every public government school receives the same state govt funding per student. With bonus funding for taking children with special needs. Therefore the lack of wealth in an area can't effect the quality of the education. In theory it puts all govt schools on an equal playing field. Families then send their kids to whatever public school services their local area. Most areas would only have 1-2 options. People try to skirt these rules by using the addresses of family and friends to claim eligibility to schools outside their locale. Otherwise you cough up and send them to a private school. Much to my disdain, our private education system is still very, very well funded, but it comes out of our federal taxes for some strange reason.

@@SaraSmilesandCreates School vouchers are 1.) a great way to dilute the already-insufficient education funding pool by spreading it around willy-nilly to small, subpar private schools rather than centralizing the funding to build facilities that can more effectively teach a wide range of subjects with good resources/tech and 2.) a great way to pour gasoline all over our founding father's intention of separation of church and state and light it on fire, as the #1 reason most people who are fans of vouchers love the idea is that it lets them send their kids to religious indoctrination camps (religious private schools) using government money, where said kids can feel suicidal if they are in the closet about being gay or trans due to being in such a hateful and oppressive environment, or if not, then they can grow up learning to perpetuate that low-key bigotry towards LGBTQ folks as they grow up.

@@DaveCleasc California funds their students on ADA (average daily attendance) and it is not strictly based on local taxes. Local taxes contribute to bond money that is often used to supplement upgrades like a new gym, football field, or building upgrades. To the best of my knowledge, which I am a teacher (but an administrator would be more suited to give the finer details) the state of California funds a large percentage of school budgets, typically between 50-60%, while local funding comes in around 20-30, and there is also federal funding which comes in usually under 10%.
