In this week’s video I show you how to build jumbo cedar planter boxes. This method for building planter boxes can be scaled down easily and used for anywise planter that you need. The secret to the design is in the corners. You can build these with a basic set of tools, however, if you have a brad nailer and a table saw, the construction does get a bit easier. It is best to use a Type 3 glue rated as waterproof when cured.

I should mention that the boxes are made of Cedar. You can make these out of Fir or something similar, however cedar will hold up better and last longer.

Eric your videos are spot on. We've have 4 small trees, these planters are within my skill and tool range. Also liked your planer vids. I've also have a old Bosch planer I bought in the late 80s it just wont die, so its going to have a second life as a clamped planer. Great idea. They say necessity is the mother of all inventions.

@@EricSorensenCanada I completed this project rather quickly using the same tools that you demonstrated without complicating planers, jigs, dadoes etc. It came out beautiful and was a huge success. My first time using cedar and I want to place it in my living room and gaze at it instead of placing it outdoors. Thanks again my friend....

This looks like a perfect solution to replace an aging plastic planter for our camellia tree! If we wanted to add rolling casters to the bottom, how would we need to alter your plans to add blocks/some other support for the casters at the bottom?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 3 жыл бұрын
I would add a little dolly / frame for it, attach the underside, then attach the casters to the frame. Basically, you need to build a furniture dolly (without the carpet). You can just buy a furniture dolly at a hardware store and just remove the carpeting from it. Harbour freight, has them for the best price.

These are perfect. I'm wondering though, what's the consideration for not using wood glue throughout the whole project?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 5 жыл бұрын
@Woodworking Thanks! You can use more glue, it's just that you want to allow for expansion and contraction where ever possible. The place where you really need the type 3 glue is on the corners for a solid edge to face joint . Besides that, you can definitely use more for the trim.

Do you have plans for them because they are super nice.
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 5 жыл бұрын
@Danny Williams Thanks! I don't have plans for them yet but the rough dimensions are 24 X 25 inches with a height of 27 inches for the corners and about 24 inches for the box. The corners are made by ripping a 1X6 board in half (27" long). Be sure to use a type 3 glue, especially for the corners such as titebond 3. The trim on the top is 3 inches wide. The trim on the sides are 2.5 inches wide.

@Rahim Jiwani 15 - 8 foot cedar 1X6 boards should make one large tree box (including all the trim) . Of course I always buy a few extra boards. If you can, buy your cedar boards through a local saw mill to get the best prices.

@@EricSorensenCanada wow! 15 8' 1x6 boards! that's a lot.. I must have made a mistake.. i calculated it out to be 10 boards! thanks so much for the clarification :)
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 4 жыл бұрын
@Rahim Jiwani If you're only building one, start with 10 and see how far you get. The trim requires a smaller pieces but you'll need to rip whole boards to get that.

How big is that planter? 2 ft deep and wide? Also, in other videos, some people put the side pieces horizontal where as you lined them vertical. Does it make any difference?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 4 жыл бұрын
2 ft square - and 2 1/2 feet deep. You can use the exact same construction and orient the boards horizontally - it's just a preference.

Hello, I'm using mainly cedar board picket fences that are usually only 19/32" thick for the whole build. I'd like to pocket holes the corner posts with pocket hole screws as well as a "picture frame" top trim. Do you know if Kreg have these blue kote screws in 1" or 3/4"? thx
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 3 жыл бұрын
They should have the (blue) outdoor treated screws in other sizes but I think they only go as low as 1-1/4".

Where do you find decent cedar? I spent 45 minutes going through the bin at Lowe’s yesterday and came away with like 6 usable boards...
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 3 жыл бұрын
You have to catch them when they get their order in fresh. What I do nowadays is go direct to a sawmill and buy my cedar that way. I get better quality boards and it costs about 30% less. I also process my boards through the thickness planer in my workshop.

Nice build, Eric. Did you apply any kind of finish to the cedar?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 5 жыл бұрын
@David Letz Thanks! Not yet. I usually leave them for the first season and stain the exposed wood in the fall with a eco-friendly outdoor stain. If they are being used to grow vegetables, you want to avoid staining the inside of the box.
