The Wild West Extravaganza

Жыл бұрын

Brushy Bill Roberts was quite the storyteller. In addition to claiming to be Billy the Kid, Roberts also said that he lived with the Yaqui, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes, served as a lookout for lady bandit Belle Starr, fought with Pancho Villa in Mexico and Teddy Roosevelt in Cuba, caught wild horses in South America and Europe, worked as a professional boxer, U.S. deputy marshal, a Pinkerton Detective, a rodeo bronc buster, and he even had his own Wild West show like Buffalo Bill Cody, which toured all over the United States. That's one marvelous adventurous life! Unfortunately, just like Brushy's claims that he was Billy the Kid, there's no proof of any of it.

Except for multiple people who actually knew Billy signing affidavits that Brushy is 100% Billy the kid.
@WildWestExtravaganza
@WildWestExtravaganza Жыл бұрын
That's not true, though. And very misleading. Most of the affidavits were, in fact, signed by people who did not know Billy. At least one of them wasn't even alive in 1881. None of Billy's regulator or outlaw buddies signed an affidavit. Nobody from Fort Sumner signed an affidavit. No lawmen or any of Billy's known associates or peers signed an affidavit. The only affidavit that holds water is Severro Gallegos. He was a young child when he allegedly knew Billy. Over sixty years later, upon meeting Brushy, Severro's initial reaction was that Roberts was far too young to be The Kid. Why he changed his tune and signed the affidavit stating otherwise, I don't know. But no, multiple people who knew Billy absolutely did not sign affidavits that he and Brushy were one and the same.

@@user-ii4tf8oy9g First of all, what do you mean when you say "scars" as in plural? Billy was only shot once, during the ambush of Sheriff Brady. If Brushy did indeed have dozens of bullet and knife scars on his body, as is claimed, then I would find that very interesting. The truth is, there is absolutely no evidence to back this up. This is just something claimed in the book Alias Billy the Kid, along with all of Brushy's other fantastical claims. There is no autopsy report, no photos of the scars, nothing. The one scar we should be able to see is the one on his face. Brushy stated that when he escaped from Garrett at Fort Sumner, a bullet struck his jaw. There are numerous photos of Brushy Bill and none of them appear to depict a man who took a 44-40 round to the face. Likewise the idea that Brushy knew things that nobody else did. There are things that Brushy got wrong - we know this for a fact - and interestingly enough, these are the same things that Walter Noble Burns got wrong in his 1926 book The Saga of Billy the Kid. Brushy had no special inside knowledge. Everything he knew, he got from books like the Saga of Billy the Kid. And he definitely had no scars.

It's all in Alias Billy the Kid by William V Morrison. It's Brushy, in his own words. The thing about his claims aren't that they're physically impossible...nothing Brushy said goes against the laws of physics. But his story does fly in the face of all logic. Not only does it sound like fiction, but bad fiction. Also, him living to be 90 doesn't really apply because all of his fantastical claims take place in his younger years.

Josh, I’d love to see you and the other guy who put out a KZbin series claiming to prove Brushy was The Kid, do a video together. Kinda a point counter point kinda thing. As for me, I don’t believe he was the Kid. I once worked with a man in his sixties who had a horrible accident at work. Crushed his pelvis. Since I talked with him daily, I was asked to contact his wife. Suffice to say, nothing he ever told me was true, right down to the women he once introduced me to. He called her by her first name so I never thought to question the fact that he was married to her. But She was his daughter in law and the woman he said was his mother in law was his wife. It only got more bizarre from there. You’d be amazed how some people lie and even begin to believe them.

Lol it's public information...go to your library or get on ancestry and search for Oliver P Roberts. You'll find his entire life in census records, marriage certs, draft registrations, divorce decrees, land deeds, etc. He was a farmer for much of his life (not 90 years though as he only lived 71 years). And he spent almost his whole life in Texas. Come on, David...you know this.

Oliver P roberts was a cousin of Brushy and in taken about 1911 there was a consensus taken where both names appeared with their wives of different names Please explain that. Ollie P disappeared from history in about 1915 and Brushy lived until 1950. Brushy started using P's name as one of the many aliases that he used. Our minds are like a computer. When you input only one side of any issue giess what it returns to you. Please tell me how many books you have read about Billy published after 1950. I'm aware of the "cousin" explanation. I like how the year of the cousin's disappearance keeps changing and everyone is expected to believe that Brushy successfully pretended to be a 35 year old (in 1915 as you claim) when he would have been in his mid 50's (if he was actually the Kid). Out of respect to your age, sir...and I'm assuming your relationship to Mr. Hall...I think we should just agree to disagree. At the end of the day for me to believe Brushy was Billy the Kid I would have to make too many extraordinary leaps of faith.

@@patrickmitchell100 Patrick, I had a very hard time understanding your question but I think maybe you're referring to Jesse Evans in Florida? The story is that he told William V. Morrison about Brushy and that he was in Texas. Unfortunately, like all of the other claims, there is absolutely nothing to back this up. The guy who pointed Morrison to Brushy (allegedly) was named Joe Hines, but that wasn't his real name - his real name was Jesse James (just not that Jesse James). Confused yet? Me too. This is yet another bizarre layer to a bizarre story and, just like everything else involved with Brushy, there's no real Joe Hines and he wasn't Jesse Evans. Evans disappeared in 1883 (double-check me on that year). He's completely lost to history, but that wasn't him in Florida. It's my opinion that there was NOBODY in Florida who pointed Morrison to Brushy. The idea that other outlaws identified Brushy is also false. Nobody who ever rode with Billy the Kid, no outlaws, no lawmen, non of his peers ever positively identified Brushy Bill Roberts, as he didn't come forward until well after they were all dead.

I don’t think he is the kid. But I have my doubts on pat killing the kid. Supposedly it’s documented that when pat shot the kid, the deputy with him rolled over the body and said you shot the wrong man. I’ve not seen the document that shows that. Only read that where a person at the museum said it’s documented. If that’s true, then that opens a whole can of work. Says it’s documented at the Marshalls office in New Mexico.
@WildWestExtravaganza
@WildWestExtravaganza 9 ай бұрын
Yep, that comes straight from Deputy John W. Poe and his book. Poe wrote "Pat, you killed the wrong man." This is a quote constantly taken 100% out of context. The moment Poe is describing is directly following the shooting, seconds later, when Pat comes running out exclaiming that he thought he killed Billy. Poe's response was one of excitement, sory of like a "no way!" Two paragraphs down, this is made explicitly clear when the same deputy, John W. Poe, describes going back into the room, seeing the body up close, and declaring that Garrett did, indeed, kill the Kid. The title of the book is The Death of Billy the Kid lol. You can find it for free online and see for yourself. Check out the video I did "Was Billy the Kid's Death a Hoax" to learn more. The problem with so many of the claims supposedly contradicting or discrediting Garrett is that they're either taken completely out of context, like above, or just completely made up. They get repeated so often that people assume they're true.

I also just read that pat said I know it’s him. I know his voice to well! You said in a video they were not friends, didn’t ride together. But, how did pat know his voice well enough to shoot him in the dark? If he didn’t know him really well. I’m just saying, I think there is a lot we really don’t know and what a lot of people think is truth is just speculation. This whole night and event doesn’t quite pass the smell test to me. But who knows
@WildWestExtravaganza
@WildWestExtravaganza 9 ай бұрын
I again ask that you watch that other video haha. But yeah, Pat and Billy were friends. I regret ever saying they weren't. As with everything, the truth is nuanced. Billy and Pat were friends at Fort Sumner. Pat lived there before becoming Sheriff and was business partners with Beaver Smith. According to Paulita Maxwell, Billy and Pat hung out together a lot at Fort Sumner. Pat was not involved, whatsoever, in the Lincoln County War, nor was he a Regulator. And after the war, Pat never rode with Billy. They were not outlaw brothers or anything like that. The Young Guns 2 relationship never existed. There's evidence Billy & other Regulators attended Pat's first wedding, Pat & Billy engaged in shooting contests and they both loved to gamble. But that's the extent of their friendship. It seemed to only exist within the confines of Fort Sumner and, once Pat accepted the job as Sheriff, the friendship was severed (per Paulita Maxwell).

Brett Hall has written books and done research on Bill Roberts, V. Morrison who interviewed Brushy Bill, also has uncovered many affidavits and letters from William Bonney and many others. With many of these letters telling stories of Billy The Kid, Roberts can recite incident’s of The Kid in spectacular detail. Where he was on such date, where he was going, who was with him, who shot who, color of horses his friends and foes rode. Without knowledge of these letters unearthed from courthouse files. He is without a doubt, William H. Bonney, Billy The Kid. Not to mention, Roberts and Morrison visited Lincoln, New Mexico and other places Bonney had been. Roberts reconnect with friends who knew Bonney personally, most of these friends knew Roberts was Bonney right away. Light blue eyes with brown speckles, five foot nine in height, talked and laughed the same way Bonney did chilled many who knew him. Pat Garrett lied and killed Mexican-Anglo Billy Barlow, buried the body the morning of, and never collected the reward money offered for the apprehension of Billy The Kid. Author, Brett Hall recites many warrants, letters, court documents, and first hand accounts. As well as many books that play on both sides of the argument, and clearly debunks Neo-Historians who believe Brushy Bill Roberts was a liar. William H Bonney lived a long and adventurous life long after Pat Garett failed to kill The Kid.

@WildWestExtravaganza

I've actually done quiet a bit of homework on the matter and yes, Pat Garrett was paid. Acting Governor of New Mexico William Ritch wrote "we are unanimous in the opinion that the gratitude of all the community is due to the said Garrett for his action, and he deserves to be rewarded." There was a delay, however. Maybe this is where the confusion stems from. The wording of the original reward offer was unclear whether it was to be paid from the official territory coffers or from the pockets of Lew Wallace. Since Wallace was no longer Governor, there was a debate as to whether or not New Mexico was stuck with the bill. There was never any dispute as to whether or not Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid. The only disagreement came from who should pay him for doing the deed. It was ultimately decided that New Mexico would make good on their promise and on February 18, 1882 they even passed a legislative act in order to get Garrett the $500. Hell, Pat got a whole lot of additional money as well. Grateful citizens pitched in and he ended up with several thousand dollars, above and beyond the initial $500 reward offered for the Kid. Try again.

This is in addition to being part of Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show, operating his own Wild West Show, and catching wild horses in South America. Oh and let’s not forget him riding guard for the stage lines in Deadwood. My favorite story is how he used to shoot branding irons out of the hands of rustlers and the time he survived a running gun battle with 1000 Mexican soldiers. These are Brushy’s own words, not mine. And if you believe these stories then God bless. I’d appreciate you at least showing one piece of evidence proving me wrong, though.

@@WildWestExtravaganza oh I'm sure he stretched out some stories but he also didn't tell everything either he was charged for murder with garretts nephews in 1892 and also his going to Shetland islands to catch ponies and going to Argentina are plausible since cattle companies were sending cattle to Liverpool in 1894 (hord cattle company) and also Argentina
@WildWestExtravaganza
@WildWestExtravaganza 3 ай бұрын
Oh it’s all plausible. You can take any one of those claims and it’s very believable. For instance, why couldn’t he have been a boxer? After all, a lot of people do box. Why couldn’t he have lived with the Cheyenne? I mean, there were white people throughout the course of history who did indeed reside with the Cheyenne. The problem with Brushy is he did not know when to stop. If every word out of his mouth is unbelievable why would I believe his claims that he was Billy? And no, he was not arrested for murder with Garrett’s nephews lol. I would love to see your source on that.

People that were in the Presence of Billy the Kid said that nobody would've taken a 2nd look at him; he wasn't an imposing figure whatsoever; he simply was deadly, and an escape artist-2-boot. Brushy Bill Roberts simply was sought & discovered by an Investigative Attorney, who was attempting 2 settle a land inheritance case. Had Joseph A Hines not have dropped a hint or two 2 the Legal Investigator, Bill Roberts never would've been spoke a word about any of it. He simply was 'found out,' and Joseph A Hines ended up inheriting Jesse Evans' brother's land. Case Closed.
