Adding an observation from testing this unit today. It actually works without a battery in it with the USB-C cable connected to a power supply. No need for a battery eliminator.

It doesn't really. The DC-DC voltage upconverter is very noisy and adds about 12 dB of interference.

It also has a signal scramble feature on the original firmware. Look for SCR on the menu. If you have two of these radios, when transmitting simplex the signal will be scrambled and unscrambled between both units.

I have a pair of early release K5s and they are OK as far as spurious emissions regs require. This makes them a better bet than a Baofang. The audio was no more than adequate but that may have been improved now. Their strength is that you can upload a lot of independent software for them. This is great for people who want a test bed for writing their own programs.

I've been looking at these Quansheng's for a while now. I have a couple of Wouxun handies covering 4m, 2m, and 70cm and been very happy with them so I don't really NEED another one but at the price I thought why not and just ordered a UV-K5(8) at just over £11 delivered!! 😃 I'm looking forward to see how it performs and how the build quality compares. I'm with you Gil on the prospect of a similar offering from one of the big players like Icom or Yaesu but I doubt it will be as cheap if one does appear! 73 😀👍

Gil, I’ve been dismissive of these cheap Chinese HTs but the Quansheng UV-K5(8) is a fascinating radio. There’s no magic going on. The radio uses the phasing method with an embedded field programable gate array to receive FM and not a superheterodyne like in other HTs. So the sky’s the limit. It should be able to receive AM and SSB/DSB with no difficulty. The major Japanese manufacturers could probably add DSB or even SSB capabilities, at least on receive assuming the radios are phasing like the Yaesu FT-4, by modifying the firmware. Transmitting DSB/USB will be a problem though assuming the PA circuits in the HT are running in class C. This cannot be fixed in software as far as I know unless the capability to run the PA stage in class A/B is already built in. I would expect a DSB signal on 2 meters or 440 MHz to sound distorted unless the PA stage is run in class A/B. I just love the Quansheng UV-K5(8) but I love the Yaesu FT-60R too. If I had to choose only one it would be tough in spite of the FT-60Rs clean signal and quality sound.

Hi, it does work DSB to DSB. Sometimes you just need to ajust the frequency a little. Range is indeed a bit greater that way.

They are a great radio to "play" with, but users do need to be very aware of the spectral problems when operated way out of the designed bands. I bought 2 of them, the first was under £11 delivered, including the accessories. The open source firmware certainly has opened up a lot of possibilities with them. DSB receive does enable you to resolve SSB but of course you lose selectivity. The radio looks to be of reasonable quality, one thing to watch is that the jacks on the programming cable need to be pressed very firmly into the radio, particularly on first use. On my radios it did feel like I was going to crush them, after that first use though the cable does not need pressing in so hard. I suspect it is a little inaccuracy in the moulding. They do make great monitor receivers, where you want something cheap and compact. 73

@@RadioPrepper about the dbs modulation, I have try with my sdr, and the issue are about the frequency alignement. There is a hidden menu into IJV who allow to calibrate the frequency. In the PDF it's named "Fine calibration of the radio oscillator frequency. Requires the use of a frequency meter.". Right now, mine are perfectly aligned. It's also intresting to compare DSB and AM using a sdr to visualize it :)

Just to remind you all, you only want to transmit FM in FCC reg (or a tiny bit above and below) or it will fly signals out everywhere including emergency services. If that’s not bad enough, it loses transmit power significantly on the actual non FCC frequency you’re trying to transmit on. I know he said it just now as I’m typing, but just a second reminder.

Hi Gil, What about the receive performance?? I note that with all these cheap Chinese handhelds the functionality for the price is the big draw card. I also note that when you see a video of testing one of these radios it's the transmit power that generally gets tested; but what about the receive performance? I have an old Icom IC-2A (the one with the thumb wheels for frequency selection) and it is way better than my UV-5R in receiving on 2m. My Baofeng struggles to hear signals that are Q5 on the Icom sitting right next to it with it's rubber ducky antenna.

Apparently DSB cannot be properly implemented. "Far away from the point of achieving DSB correct transmission due to hardware limitations, but a better, and somehow usable voice DSB signal. There is a firmware that can transmit SSTV, list time i checked it removed some other nice to have like the spectrum analyzer so i replaced it. Quansheng could do follow up version and turn this in to a $100 radio, at least. My wishlist: More and better filters (better reception and maybe even transmission on a few more bands, 6 and 10 meters in a handheld would be really cool) More powerful processor (supporting more advanced features in FW) Processor connected between RF chip and speaker/mic to allow digital audio processing and supporting more digital modes GPS (to get good APRS use with the above) Built in USB so no special cable is needed (using the interface in a MCU should allow both serial and audio) Better waterproofing Bluetooth (if well implemented, if not it's not worth it)

Gil, very good, you know me enough by now that I tend to be always looking for the down side of things. The down side I see for at least here in America where cheating and disobeying the laws are the norm, and with that said the concern I have is like the Biofeng many have bought the inxpencive radios and have not the FCC license to legally operate and some do cause interference by not knowing or following the band plan. Now what are we going to see with another cheap radio that will allow more sections of the bands to be used. Now if that radio costs five times as much, maybe the riff raff would not buy them and only licensed ham radio operators would have them. Maybe we should be required to show proof of license before we are allowed to buy? Ya I know another goverment big brother approach . .On the upside it is intresting to see the advancment taking place with these little transmitters. TU Gil Good review. De N7KO Ken.
