That's why MCU Flash annoys me so much. He's SUCH a waste of the character and all the Agent Venom potential. Having a guy who seems like a real asshole bully Flash, who turns out to be a fan of Spider-Man, and then turns out to sympathize with Peter, and becomes his friend, IS THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT of Flash Thompson. The MCU just utterly misses the point of everything about Flash....

Also in the comics, the webshooters were always man-made mechanics by Peter. The Tobey Maguire movies were the first to introduce organic webshooters, which were later adapted (albeit briefly) into the comics as well.

Right. The only time they were organic in the comics was when he wore the symbiote costume. Spider-man writers told me at cons that they didn't like the organic webs because they took away a story/plot element of needing to be refilled sometimes at critical moments. Plus it lessened Peter's legacy of inventing them and being a brilliant mind.

@sebastianemond5313 8 ай бұрын
@@vincentschmitt7597 Well, to be fair, they never said Peter wasn't a brilliant mind in the Raimi movies. There were just too many moments with him making dumbass choices to see it, like in Spider-Man 3 with him kissing Gwen upside down *in front* of MJ. Also, in the 90s animated series, there was a Multiverse variant of Peter that became a mutant Man-Spider, so maybe Cameron saw that and was playing with the idea at the time with the bio-web shooters. It wouldn't be the first time something animated from the 90s inspired Cameron, like Alita: Battle Angel. However, like Spider-Man, life and career choices forced Cameron to hand the project to another director while he worked on the Avatar movies.

@@sebastianemond5313 Personally, I dig the idea of organic web-shooters. It fits to the theme that he has _spider_ powers, and not, like, gecko-maybe powers. Web gadgets is more a deliberate choice by peter to go that direction. Ultimately though, I don't really care if it's natural or not, as long as he has it.

Gwen Stacy is possibly the single most important woman in comic book history. She pretty much changed how comic stories were told, by dying. Her death was absolutely shocking, in a day and age where the hero always wins! In this one instance, Spidey failed, lost his love and it kicked off the era of "nobody is safe now, ANYBODY can die" which we are still doing to this day, decades later. Wonder Woman may be a more inspirational, badass powerhouse but no woman has left that huge an impact on comic books, like Gwen did. She changed the entire industry. So yeah, little history lesson there on "who dis?!" She big time important.

Ashleigh, just so you know, when Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created The Amazing Spider-Man for Marvel Comics in the 60's, Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker's true and first love. But in a battle with the Green Goblin, Gwen Stacy died. So, then they introduced MJ as the new girlfriend. When the Tobey Maguire movies were being made, Peter and MJ were together in the comics, so they chose Kirsten Dunst to be the ultimate MJ. The Amazing Spider-Man movies were a reboot, so they brought back Gwen Stacy, instead of MJ. ( Because who could replace Kirsten Dunst? )

So, the reason there are two (well, three) Spider-Men initially is because the Tobey Maguire movies got cancelled before the 4th movie could be made. The Amazing Spider-Man is the reboot of the franchise (hence why we see Uncle Ben get got again). To differentiate itself from the previous series, this one focused on Peter's parents disappearance and gave him a different love interest, Gwen Stacy. Gwen was Peter's original girlfriend in the comics *before* Mary Jane. (Also, as others have pointed out, Gwen shows up in the Raimi/Maguire Spider-Man trilogy in part 3 as the blonde who kisses Spider-Man upside-down at the press event, making MJ jealous.) However, this was another series that got canceled and rebooted again, which is why we have Tom Holland as Spidey now. **edit** to clarify, in order for Sony to retain the film rights to the Spider-Man franchise, they have a certain amount of time to make a Spider-Man or related film. Since it was five years between Spider-Man 3 and the next film, and Spider-Man 4 was having production issues, Sony decided to reboot rather than wait any longer for Spider-Man 4.

Apparently, according to one of the producers of The Amazing Spider Man, Sam Raimi's version wasn't cancelled, but it wasn't locked in. In terms of Peter relationships in the comics, Liz Allan had a thing for Peter in the early comics but she was dating Flash Thompson. Peters first girlfriend was Betty Brant who worked at the Daily Bugle but both became platonic friendships, classic teenage romance. Peter's first serious relationship was with Gwen Stacy who was a classmate of Peter's at Empire State University, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #31 (1963). It was not until The Amazing Spider-Man #42 (November 1966) that Peter met MJ for the first time, she was mentioned before this by Aunt May but Peter never thought about meeting her at all until Aunt may invited her over and he was taken aback by how stunning she looked. For the Rami films they went with MJ first as she's iconic but Peter and Betty Brant was featured in the film, working at the desk at the Daily Bugle, few flirty moments. Then Gwen is introduced once Peter goes to College depicted in Spider-Man 3. So Peter met MJ much earlier in these films, In the mainline comic it was actually revealed later that MJ knew Peter was Spider-Man all along since she was a teen when she saw him jump out of his window without his mask. For the Webb Amazing Spider-Man films they pull from the Ultimate Universe, new re-imagined and modernized continuity set in the 2000s, fresh start for a new generation of readers. Here Gwen was in Peter's High School where they both became close friends but never dated. The film uses the idea of Gwen being in Peters High School with both meeting as teenagers rather than Adult College Students. I personally preferred Gwen to MJ so it was nice that she was the focus of these films.

Spot on, except that ASM #31 came out in December 1965 (not 1963), just 11 months before MJ makes her first full appearance. And Peter does date them both casually before choosing Gwen. I've been doing a re-read of them recently. Man, that 60's dialog and lingo are cringe. I didn't start reading ASM until after Gwen was gone (early 80's), but even then she was such a presence in the comics, because of Peter being unable to save her.
@adamantyr
@adamantyr 8 ай бұрын
One thing they had to do later was retcon ages; Peter Parker was only 17 when he got his powers, and an older woman like Betty flirting with him would be cringe-worthy, so they made her the same age, working an internship at the Daily Bugle. I liked in Ultimate Spiderman how he was only 14 and he had more than a few problems with that. (The Black Cat was a full 20-something and she was horrified when she took off the mask of Spider-Man after kissing him. She actually threw up.)

It’s worth remembering (with all comics) that these characters have been around a long, long time. Peter Parker was a teenager back in 1963 (issue 1) & since then his story has been told many many times. Sometimes a new editor, might be a new writer, to do with a new story. Anyway these continual reboots have kept him a young man (or teenager), for the most part at least. He’s been in thousands of comics, has many hundreds of enemies & a number of relationships. Yes MJ is iconic in his stories, but so is Gwen, and they aren’t the only two. Each reboot is modernised, very similar to the last, the story of a young man, struggling to do more, struggling with loss, trying to live up to his Uncles words, with great power comes great responsibility. Separate to that we have show BUSINESS & the MCU. Sony bought the rights to Spider-Man & before the MCU we had Tobey’s Spider-Man. From memory they seemed to be struggling, the studio, creative differences, the director etc… and decided to basically do what the comics do, a reboot, with a new actor. Thousands of stories to choose from & what we got was this, the Amazing Spider-Man. This version (that I really enjoy) though struggled, it was up against the new MCU & so soon after the Tobey movies, fresh in the memory. Anyway probably in part because of its poor box office the MCU/Disney did a deal and we got Tom’s Spider-Man as part of the MCU with Sony doing spider related super hero movies like Venom, Venom 2, Morbius & the 2 animated Spider-Man movies Into the Spidrperverse & Across the Spiderverse. Anyway Tom’s version is different again, but Marvel introduced him very differently, rather than how we saw in these Sony movies. Younger, already been bitten, no Uncle around, but feels very much like a Spider-Man. I hope this helps a bit. Again from memory I think when Sony bought the rights to Spider-Man they got over 800 characters. Then you have what Marvel has, Universal have some rights to the Hulk & of course Fox had X-men & Fantastic Four (both of which must have been a massive amount of characters) but are now with Disney.

As others have already pointed out: Even though Gwen was Spidey's first serious love and holds an extremely important place in the history of comics due to her death, I believe the original trilogy went with MJ as Spidey's love interest is because, out of all of Peter's love interests in comics (and there have been a few), MJ was the only one he actually wound up marrying. At the time (1987) it was the greatest and most notable event to have ever been published in comics.

1.) There are multiple movie series because of complicated rights issues. 2.) His organic webshooters are a rarity in the Spider-mythos. 3.) Gwen Stacy one was of several love interests teased out in the early days, appeared on-panel before MJ, and not even the first; I _think_ that honor belongs to Betty Brant. ---I always saw the decision to have Gwen take prominence in this series over MJ in the first one to be a choice to distinguish them, provide a LITTLE creative justification as opposed to just "we made this because Disney's lawyers were knockin' at the door". 4.) MJ was actually _shot_ for that sequel you already saw, just not actually shown. There was a LOT left on the cutting-room floor; ASM 2 is a VERY uneven product. Hell, his DAD came back in an abandoned plot thread!

To answer some questions, Gwen Stacy is Peter's first love in the comics. Green Goblin killed her by throwing her off a bridge (just like he did with Mary Jane in the first Sam Raimi movie) and when Spidey caught her, the whiplash snapped her neck which killed her instantly. Comic Mary Jane got with Peter afterwards and the two have been the longest running of Peter's girlfriends. Gwen is Peter's first love, Mary Jane is his true love. The Raimi films opted to go with Mary Jane since she was the more famous and popular of the love interests, this film went with Gwen to be more accurate to Spidey's origins by having his first love instead and to be different from the Raimi films. Spider-Man's webs are normally done via technology, his web shooters are mechanical. Tobey's biological web shooters are the weird exception. Peter's powers are the ability to stick to walls, super strength, his Spider-Sense (instantly detecting danger) and heightened reflexes, advanced healing, and durability. Peter also happens to be highly intelligent and designed the web shooter to compliment his powerset.

peter making the web shooters fits in with his science nerd persona and why he was in a lab to get bitten in the first place. there's a whole lot of willful ignorance to accept an unlimited supply of webbing coming from his body and then conveniently out of his wrists as well.

There might have been a brief arc in the comics where they were organic, but I'm pretty sure that was written after the Sam Raimi movies introduced the idea, but have since gone back to mechanical. A lot of drama derived from his web-shooters running out of web-fluid at just the worst possible time.

32:55 The reason for different Spider Man stories, actors, characters on screen, villains, and powers is because of: Reality Money issues, story rights issues, actors aging, MCU becoming insanely popular.... The reason given out to the viewers------ Multiverse theory. If there are infinite parallel universes, as shown in Doctor Strange, then there are infinite Spider Men that all come by their powers, love interests, motivations, friends, and villains through different events. There's also a whole series of animated Spider Man movies with a character named Miles Morales as Spider Man, and they were well liked and received. You don't have to watch them, but you may want to google a quick search for Miles Morales to get an idea of him before continuing your Spider Man story, at least. There's a tiny bit that comes later in the movies that just hits better if you at least know who Miles is.

1:16 "Also, why do we have three Spiderman? I don't understand." Well, you have to bear in mind that Spiderman, by definition, is a fairly _young_ character. Consistently, he's either in his senior year of high school or his first few years of college. He's one of those comic heroes that _actors_ can age out of instead of _actresses._ They passed the torch from Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield because Maguire got too old. Then they passed the torch from Garfield to Tom Holland because _Garfield_ got too old. It won't be long before _Holland_ has to pass the torch on this role.

Tobey was 26-27 when he was playing a supposedly 17 year old Peter. (Kirsten was 19 as MJ.) "The Amazing Spider-Man" came out in 2012, which would have made Tobey in his late 30s if he'd returned for that film. No way was he going to be playing a young Spider-Man at almost 40. Andrew Garfield was also 27 when he played 17 year old Peter in his first movie. So this is why they keep changing the actor. They're in their 30s by the third movie. Gwen was Peter's first girlfriend, but MJ was the one he later married. So Tobey was paired with MJ. Andrew was paired with Gwen to be different, but still following the comics, as Gwen was his girlfriend while Peter was still in school.

The Spider-Man Story has several branches in the "Multiverse". The newer Tom Holland version has M.J. as Michelle Jones (I may be mistaken), and the Toby one has Mary Jane who is the more well known love interest. However Gwen in the comics was his first true Love interest until the comic that had a similar ending to Amazing Spiderman 2 which you said you've seen. In the comics after the incident he was in a depression for a while burying himself in his work as a vigilante until Aunt May set him up on a blind date with Mary Jane which in the comics has her face hidden until the big reveal for their blind date. Back to the Multiverse thing, Stan Lee actually created Madame Web (First created in 1980 by a couple of different artists) was later remade for the 90's animated series in the image of his wife Martha. In the series she brought up the Multiverse of Spiderman being several different versions. One of which is Gwen Stacey being bitten while she volunteered in the lab instead of Peter. She later became Spider Gwen. Gwen is actually a much larger part of Spiderman lore, but is often overlooked because of Mary Jane being the more well known. Random fact: Bryce Dallas Howard played Gwen in Spider-Man 3 with Toby Maguire.

First of all Gwen Stacy was in the original Spiderman Trilogy and she is one of Peter’s other love interests in the comics. Think of it sort of like an Archie Betty/Veronica thing. The reason there was these two films is because of Sony. See they own the rights to the Spiderman characters and if they hadn’t made the films they rights would have gone back to Marvel fully. On the webs... Historically, Spider-Man always made his own web shooters and web fluid. It's a running joke in the old Marvel comics universe that no one except Spider-Man can make the fluid, not even Tony Stark or Reed Richards. Many try but they can't quite get it right. (Too brittle, not sticky enough, etc.) The first "organic" web shooters were introduced in Spider-Man 2099, with Miguel O'Hara, who got his powers when trying to replicate the "historical" Spider-Man's powers. He also had fangs and venom. You'll meet him soon enough in the Sony animated movies.

Sony got the rights to make Spider-man movies from Marvel (comics) when it was in a bad place. Sony needs to keep making Spider-man movies if they want to keep the licence. After the first series of films, they rebooted it. It's supposed to be a different take, with different characters and a different girlfriend. Fun fact, in the comics, Peter never met MJ or Gwen in high school, they were his college love interests. And technical web shooters are the comic book way.

The mechanical web shooters are from the original comics. Peter was a science wunderkid. Same with Gwen Stacy: she's the original comic GF. Mary Jane came after her. The Garfield Spider-men were a reboot, aimed to attract/appeal to a new generation of fans. Maguire was already 37 at the time this was made. But there was also some stuff about Sony owning the rights to Spider-man, which is why they kept rebooting the series with fairly short intervals. There was 10 years between the first Maguire Spider-man and this one, and only 5 between this and the last Maguire movie. Maguire was injured while making the movies so idk how willing he would've been to keep making more of these. I think the switch also occurred at around the time he was getting a lot of bad press with some lawsuits claiming he was not the greatest person and might've had a gambling addiction and was maybe hustling money from other Hollywood big names... it was a whole mess. Probably a sum of a lot of different moving parts that Sony decided to reboot.

Gwen was Peter's first big girlfriend. You watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2, so you're aware that Gwen dies, then MJ came it. For most people growing up in the 90s MJ was the default. Also it's this whole story or Marvel (the comics studio) going bankrupt, so they sold movie rights for certain characters to like Sony or Fox or Universal. When Marvel started with the MCU they had no rights to their biggest characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men or Fantastic Four. Over the years they were slowly regaining rights to certain characters like Daredevil or the Punisher. Sony wanted to keep Spider-Man, but MCU was doing really well, so they made a deal with Marvel (or Disney at this point). This allowed Spider-Man to appear in the MCU which is a win-win for both companies.

You do know who Gwen is. She was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3 (2007), the blonde girl who Peter recreated the upside-down kiss with on stage while in Spider-Man costume, upsetting Mary Jane. Before the MCU launched and established a connecting storyline and actors that would weave into a big storyline, reboots were common. Sony decided after Spider-Man 3 cost the most and made the least of the Sam Raimi movies, that they would cancel a planned Spider-Man 4 with Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and Kirsten Dunst (plus John Malkovich playing The Vulture, the villain that Michael Keaton would end up playing in the MCU Spider-Man), and make this completely new take on Spider-Man instead. This is similar to the way the Michael Keaton/Val Kilmer/George Clooney Batman movies are considered a series, and then the Christian Bale Batman movies are a separate series. I agree with the other commenters that I hope you watch the Spider-Verse movies, which not official parts of the MCU (even though there are some winks and nods).

We have three different movie Spider-Men because Sony Pictures kept rebooting the franchise. After the first three movies, director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire left the series. So rather than continue the story with a new director and new Spider-Man actor, they decided to start over again and reboot the whole story with director Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man. But the two movies with them weren't as critically and financially successful as Sony wanted, and they were getting really envious of Marvel Studios because they were doing gangbusters with the MCU and the Avengers movies. And since Marvel Studios also wanted Spider-Man in the MCU, the two companies worked out a deal. They introduced yet another new Spider-Man with Tom Holland, rebooting the franchise for the second time. Marvel Studios would be responsible for producing a new series of standalone Spider-Man movies, but most of the box office earnings would go to Sony. But in return, Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies would officially be part of the ongoing MCU narrative, allowing Tom Holland's Spider-Man to appear in the MCU's Avengers movies and MCU characters like Tony Stark and Nick Fury to make appearances in the standalone Spider-Man movies.

There's no in-story reason for why there's so many different actors playing Spider-man; just that the studios decided to reboot the franchise. With the exception of Chris Reeve's Superman, and the Batman franchise of the 90s, Toby McGuire/Sami Raimi's Spider-Man was one of the first successful superhero movies, at a time when Superman had been out of theatres for ages, the Batman franchise had flamed out; and it had also been one of the first Marvel based characters in live action, proving there was still potential in that genre. But the third Toby movie was not widely well received and a Spider-man 4 was shelved in favor of rebooting the franchise outright with Amazing Spiderman (which is also the character's original and conventional comic book title). Amazing 2 didn't do great at the box office, so plans for a sequel for Andrew's Spider-Man was scrapped too. Meanwhile, Marvel had no involvement in any of this, because they had leased the rights for Spider-man, among other characters, during a time when Marvel was on the verge of bankruptcy; long before they even dreamed of being in the movie business themselves. Sony got Spider-Man, but a caveat with the agreements was that if the property went unused for a certain amount of time, the rights reverted back to Marvel; which was probably a motivator to keep churning out something. Spider-Man appearing in Civil War was a huge get, requiring a lot of negotiations between Marvel Studios and Sony; and lead to further partnerships on solo-Spider-Man movies that kept the latest iteration in the MCU.

Hi, Ash. Regarding different Spider-Man film series: Back in the day when Stan Lee was still publisher at Marvel, he was very actively in trying to get Hollywood to work with Marvel characters. He sold the license to many Marvel characters. This continued after Stan left Marvel. The license to make films of Marvel characters were sold to film studios (through contracts that weren’t in Marvel’s best favor). X-Men and Fantastic Four went to 20th Century Fox, and Spider-Man went to Columbia Pictures (owned by Sony) for $7 million (which f which Sony’s made billions). Sony made three films with Tobey, then rebooted the series with Andrew. Avengers came out after this film you just watched. The sequel (Amazing Spider-Man 2) was poorly received. Having difficulty with Spider-Man films and wanting to capitalize on the new Marvel “craze”, Sony wrote a contract with Marvel that would let Marvel have creative control over Spider-Man within the MCU (projects Marvel Studios has direct control over). The resulting Spider-Man films starred Tom Holland. I personally prefer Marvel to control content regarding their own characters. X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights have returned to Marvel when Disney bout Fox. However, Sony still has a vice-grip on films containing any Spider-Man related characters as of this writing.

In the 1990s, in order to avoid bankruptcy, Marvel sold off a lot of their characters to movie studios. Spider-Man was sold to Sony, XMen to Fox, Hulk to Universal, etc. That's why Spider-Man isn't part of the Marvel Cinematic universe. While Mary Jane is Peter's longest relationship, he did date Gwen Stacey first. So, in the Maguire trilogy they went with the most well known love interest and in these they went with the original high school love interest. As at least one other person has already stated, in the comics Spider-Man traditionally had the mechanical web shooters. There have been some variations and storyline where that changed, but Peter Parker is known for developing those. It showcases his intellect and what he could have acco.plished in the field of technology had he not been Spider-Man. That being said: all will be explained in No Way Home.

The true story of why Spider-Man got rebooted twice: Sony didn't want to lose the Spider-Man movie license, but if they didn't make another Spider-Man movie soon, Marvel would have been able to buy themselves out of the licensing deal and make their own Spider-Man movies, which is obviously something they would want to do, since they had gotten into making their own movies at that point. Spider-Man 4 was in development, but it was taking too long and kept running into script issues, so while that was going on, Sony made sure they had a reboot script on the side just in case they needed a plan B. As time started running out and as that plan B script was coming together, they decided to cancel Spider-Man 4 and fast track the reboot, since it was closer to being ready. Hence this movie instead of Spider-Man 4. Then this movie got a sequel. At that point, they were in discussions with Marvel about possibly making some kind of collaborative deal to get Spider-Man included into the MCU, as the idea had come up that it could be mutually beneficial. By the time of Captain America: Civil War, an agreement was made, wherein Marvel could borrow Spider-Man from Sony for crossover events while Sony would make Spider-Man movies set in the MCU and borrow additional characters from Marvel (such as Iron Man), all with creative input from Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, but the crux was...it had to be a new, younger Spider-Man, and a narrative clean slate. Hence Tom Holland and the "Home" trilogy and hence why Amazing Spider-Man 3 was canceled during development. The story doesn't end there, but I don't want to spoil where it goes.

In the comics the webbing is not part of his body. So the Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland Spider-Men webbing are the accurate ones. Gwen is waaay more important than MJ in the comics. She was Peter’s first love who dies in the comics.

So glad you're watching these Spidey movies. Garfield is my favorite of the three. The only complaint i remember people having about him was that he was too cool to be Peter Parker lol. Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May are probably my favorite as well. Sure, this uncle Ben doesn't give the exact "Great Responsibility" line, but I really enjoy the alternate take on it, (about having a moral obligation to help people if you have the ability to) The suit isn't my favorite, "Amazing Spider-Man 2" has my favorite. I still remember being really bummed that Andrew never got his 3rd movie, but "No Way Home" brings much more closure than I was expecting.

The Marc Webb-directed "Amazing Spider-Man" film series is in fact, a reboot. Sam Raimi was in talks to direct a "Spider-Man 4" which would have featured Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst coming back as Peter and Mary Jane. After dealing with a lot of studio interference during the making of "Spider-Man 3," as well as dealing with further studio meddling from Sony Pictures, to the point of proposing an idea that Raimi absolutely hated and was a far cry from the story he wanted to tell (one where Curt Connors did transform into the Lizard), he left the project. Sony decided it was simpler to reboot the entire franchise, so long as a new movie came out at all within five years of the last one, as per the original 1998 contract made between Sony and Marvel Comics. During those five years, we saw the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In media, when something (in this case, the concept of a cinematic universe) becomes popular and successful, it will inspire a lot of imitators who cynically chase after the trend (and the money) without really analyzing too hard on what made the original idea work in the first place. The entire Infinity War saga worked as well as it did because while there was a roadmap with a clear finish line to get to, every writer and director handling these films knew that each individual film still needed to stand to scrutiny as a standalone feature first. Each of the imitators, from Warner Bros' DC Extended Universe to Universal's Dark Universe, made the mistake of focusing too much on the overall worldbuilding or setting up for future films and not enough on the quality of the individual scripts of the first entries in the franchise. In the case of the "Amazing Spider-Man" films, it really wasn't until the second one where they overinflated on worldbuilding and plot points for future movies, but the early warning signs of the writing quality are noticeable in this movie, especially when you look back on the Raimi films. While the dialogue in the original Spider-Man trilogy could be kind of silly and have a few questionable choices made, the bare bones of the story (the three-act structure, the pacing, the themes, and the overall flow of the narrative) were executed well, leaving a trilogy of simple stories that are pretty easy for audiences to follow. This movie and its sequel have a flipped situation: The acting and dialogue feel more grounded and natural, while the action scenes are more fast and slick. However, the pacing is a little bit off, with some scenes maybe going on a little too long, especially ones where we're retreading similar story beats to the 2002 film. I think Ashleigh's moments of distraction (32:06) is something of a problem with the movie's script. It just needed a little bit more polishing. When "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" reached theaters, it made 93.5% of what the previous film made and was within the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2014, both of which are impressive feats on their own. Unfortunately, the sequel was slightly more expensive and the reviews were mixed. Sony quickly cancelled all potential direct sequels and by 2015, they came to an agreement with Disney in terms of sharing the film rights to Spider-Man in order to include the character in the MCU, with Sony retaining production and distribution of entries where Spider-Man is the central protagonist and Disney having ownership over entries where Spider-Man is a supporting character.

@Ashleigh To give some form of a timeline here, this film came out in 2012; the same year as Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). This was meant to be a re-telling of Spider-Man, but not to give any mention for the previous movies. It’s essentially a reboot of the franchise, similar to what was done with Batman Begins (2005). Having seen your past reactions to the Spider-Man movies, you need to follow this with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). When you do, prepare to go back (if needed) to see the Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland (Homecoming and Far From Home) before you get to Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

- Gwen was Peter's original girlfriend in the comics, but was killed by Green Goblin (as you saw in Amazing Spider-Man 2, though the exact circumstances were different), With Mary Jane being his second love interest. - I'm not sure of the reasoning for rebooting from the Tobey Maguire Spidey to the Andrew Garfield version, but they stopped making Amazing Spider-Man films because of a deal was made to add Spider-man to the MCU (which ended up with Tom Holland playing Peter. 😋) - Technically Pete's problem with breaking things is because he has superstrength _and_ he's sticking to stuff. -Actually for most of the versions of Spider-man, his webs are technology based. The Tobey Maguire Spidey movies actually got a few odd looks for the webbing be created by his body (admittedly, that was inspired by a recent-at-the-time arc of the comics where Peter had mutated and developed 'built-in' webshooters) - the 'truth' about Peter's parents was a plot point in Amazing Spider-Man 2. - There were times when there were 4 (5?) Spider-Man comics per month, each with their own story lines. Spidey has a huge rogues gallery. - Most versions of Peter are pretty smart, inventing their webshooters, and often multiple kinds of webbing, and various gizmos to neutralize the baddies various tech/abilities

Gwen Stacy was Peter's OG girlfriend in the comics. She died at the hands of the Green Goblin. Mary Jane Watson didn't appear until much later.

After Spider-Man 3 failed at the Box office, SONY decided to reboot the franchise which became The Amazing Spider-Man. As for Gwen Stacy, she was Peter’s first love interest in the comic. As for the MCU Spider-Man. Marvel negotiated with SONY and got the partial film rights back in order to bring Spider-Man into the MCU. Also, if you get around to the Animated Spider-Man (Into the spider verse, my favorite) Gwen plays a big part in that.

The reason for all the different Spiderman portrayals is that Sony bought the rights to the character and a bunch of his villains, and then had *no freakin' clue* what to do with the character. So, they just kept telling the same story, with only minor modifications. Eventually, Sony realized they had *no freakin' clue* and started to work with Marvel, and Marvel (as you'll soon see) made fool's gold into diamond wonderfulness. 😊
