Remembered when this was my dream back in the day when I was young, talking about slotting 2 in one PC; whilst ignoring the electric bill and the imminent fire hazard. Oh how illiterate I was...
@jakegarrett81094 жыл бұрын
I thought about doing that. I had found 2 R9 390X2 8GB cards for $250 total, so that would be 4x 390 8GB cards for $250 and performance way above 2080ti levels in a common board with 2 16x slots. My personal build though is 4x Fury (which really only works on a Threadripper platform, which is what I have so it works great), but at one point I almost swapped them out for FIJI Pro duos (duel Fury on a PCB), but kind of pointless for gaming since Xfire only supports 4x GPU cores and not 8x (but dang those Pro DUO cards were insanely cheap!). It works great in most of my games, silky smooth 100 fps in Crysis 3 at 4k Ultra (compared to a choppy 45 fps on my Titan Xp), so its around 2x 2080ti SLI performance for just $500, but since it requires a Threadripper platform its nowhere near the value proposition of 2x duel GPU cards on a cheaper motherboard, but I use the threads so its not just gaming. Highest monthly electric bill I've ever had was under $40, so not bad, but I also don't game 24/7 (even still it would be a decade before 2x 2080ti ever paid for themselves).

Not really, it does draw the standard 75W from the slot. However, the card does break the PCIe standard and draws around 215W from each 8 pin cable (Which is only supposed to give 150W per cable), which means that you need a really good PSU to run one of them, and to run two, you will need something like a good quality crypto mining PSU that can give full power to 6x8-pin cables, they are pretty power hungry pieces of hardware.

RandomGaiminginHD : I'm telling ya mate, AMD FINE RED WINE. The R9 200 series from 2013 was the second true DX 12 and ASYNC capable hardware....and that parallelism in its architecture helps it compensate for the slight lack of GDDR5 speed....to run modern games very well. And yeah that 512-bit memory bandwidth helps a lot indeed as a horsepower throughput :). I do myself own a Gigabyte R9 390 8GB Windoforce 2X....which I love because it plays games at 1080p Ultra easily on a modern fast IPC CPU like Ryzen 5 5600X :). You'll find that Fiji is weird (like even at fixed frequencies changing voltage will change performance even when its stable), there's a lot of weird quirks to it if you get into serious overclocking with them, but otherwise leave it alone besides maybe dropping the Vcore some (it varies per card, but if you leave it stock you might start with shaving 50mV off and keep lowering until unstable and that will save some on power)

I was one of the few people who played at 2160p in 2014 :) I bought a Samsung U28D590D which was one of the first true UHD monitors that came to the market. It was 600€. There have been a few others before that were really expensive and you had to drive them like 2 monitors in one device. I think it was because of limitations of the DP interface. Anyway, I did not have a R9 295X2 but I had a single R9 290X. And yeah... it was able to deliver average framerates on high settings in UHD. Was it a great gaming experience? Well UHD was very new at the time and nobody had it so I was just really impressed how sharp and crisp the games looked. And ofc watching videos or just surfing the web was amazing. Looking back at it, no it would not impress anyone nowadays. The input lag just wasn't great. It's not the worst I've ever seen but it's still kinda slow compared with a true gaming monitor. And ofc it's 60Hz only. I still have it today and it serves as a great second monitor in my setup. But I switched to a nice 1440p 165Hz IPS GSync monitor so I can enjoy my games better. I thought it might be hard to go down in resolution after experiencing 2160p but really it wasn't. 1440p really is the sweet spot for PC gaming nowadays. I noticed a slight reduction in sharpness on small text on the desktop but in games you can't see any difference with your eyes but you get a great increase in performance. tbh 1440p still is very demanding. I switched to a Geforce 1070 and later I went all in on a 2080 Ti a few months after launch but it's still not easy to drive games maxed out at 1440p. my recommendation for anyone looking for a UHD monitor is: don't do it! go for a HFR 1440p monitor instead and only if you dump a lot of money into your computer anyway. for everyone else with an average PC, stick with a HFR 1080p monitor. year sharpness isn't great but it's much more important that the games run smooth on your system.

Don't get the 2000w PSUs, most of those are fake chinese spec (I don't want to talk about how many PSUs I've fried at 50-80% rated load... they weren't even cheap), plus most of those are just 2x "1000w" Chinesium rated PSUs bolted together (which you can easily do yourself and use actual quality power supplies with a $2 "Add2PSU" device or just 2 wires) I actually use 2x of these SuperNova 1300 PSUs since its a Halloween build (duel 13's), and I don't want to rewire just to be safe if I'm wanting to use dry ice or LN2 on the CPU, but even one does fine (its somewhere over 1400w on the 12v rail output, around 1,700w at the wall, but these high end PSUs have specs below what they can actually do like my HX1200i does fine at 1350w output and still hits 90% efficiency with 1500w at the wall). But on that subject of name brand ones avoid Rosewill (Newegg's brand, but goodness I get tired of seeing those fry and they won't replace destroyed parts like my $250 SSD that fried because one of those died and took my SSD out with it). They aren't even cheaper than Corsair or EVGA, so they should be good but they just aren't

I had a 290x and it was the last AMD card I used. It was an amazing card and the first time I ever tried 4k gaming. Only problem was how hot it ran.

@@Domstar97 Yeah, it's basically a GTX 1060 which is still enough for 1080p. It's just very powerhungry, that's all. A friend of mine got a cheap GTX 980 Ti and had to upgrade his PSU, basically paying extra just to be able to use it :D

My HTPC is a i5 2400 and a R7 250 2GB, at 1200x800, still plays games decently well. Its limit is like Farcry 5 and Ghost Recon Wildlands though. But older ones like GTA5 is like somewhere between PS3 and PS4 version quality and feel.

I wanted one of these for my Corsair Obsidian 250D, to make Crossfire in an Mini ITX. The Titan Z wasn't gonna fit. But I never could afford it, and glad I couldn't, since multi-GPU is pretty much dead. So I used an XFX Radeon HD 290X 8GB edition, the 8GB on a 512-bit bus back in that time was extreme overkill. But it was such a beautiful card and a powerhouse to boot.

Last dual GPU setup I had was twin GTX Titans. Even with games supporting it, it was a pain. SLI would turn itself off at random times and after driver updates. You’d forget to turn it back on and have your second GPU doing nothing.

I use to have that card, I loved it and still regret selling it, however, there is a collection of bios files that will enable uefi mode for the card (I cant remember where I got them although it was a large site), you do need to flash both gpus with there corresponding file, that might help with your newer cpu, possibly?

Suggested PSU for this 2014 card was 900 W :) . It have similar performance like GTX Titan X and GTX 980 TI and GTX1070 is 15% faster then AMD R9.295x2. But still this 6-7 year 1500$ card can play new games releases on high in 1440p is amazing. .

I use antec 1300W at the least because they have state of the art 100A+ per PCI power rail

The problem is the lack of dual GPU support, either SLI or Crossfire... If they had continued supporting them cards like this, the 7990, or even something like say a pair of GTX 1080s in SLI would be insane gaming options, but alas, it was not meant to be
@MrKillswitch884 жыл бұрын
The worst of such coolers were for the powermac G5 that would leak coolant onto the cpu cards and into the psu while at least these modern units gradually dry out but fixing them can be a bit of effort.

I had one of these back in the day and until the GTX1080 came out it was king. Now the card relied on crossfire support and even back then most games did not support this feature. Running with crossfire its performance was on par with a GTX1080 but without it the performance was more like a GTX970. Considering this thing came out 2 years before the GTX1080 it was quite the beast. (If the game u where playing had crossfire support.)

You know I still theorize that multi GPU setups were killed to force an upgrade. In the few games that works, it works wonder and with explicit multi GPU it was incredibly promising, the example or two out there show it. You could had grabbed two $270 RX 5600 XTs and beat the RTX 3090 in games. No manufacturer wants that, they want cheap low end GPUs so they can sell more to who cant afford it and expensive high end GPUs to sell for higher margins to whoever wants the performance.
