In the US, we buy our hot dogs in the refrigerated section of the store. Because they are meat products. We don't buy them in jars or in vacuum sealed, non-refrigerated packages.
@elmstreetish
@elmstreetish 3 жыл бұрын
That's what I thought. I have never seen hot dogs in a jar. They are always vacuum packed in a plastic container or you might buy them the old fashioned way in the meat or deli section. These jarred hot dogs look like fauxmerican products that are heavily marketed to non-Americans. One bizarre thing that I have seen for real is an entire whole chicken in broth sold in an over size can. British consumers might get a bigger kick out of seeing whole canned chicken for sale in the American products section.

“Snyder’s of Hanover” is the largest pretzel manufacturer on the US located in Hanover, Pennsylvania where there were a lot of German immigrants. A&W is not only a root beer and cream soda drink company but it’s a fast food chain selling burgers and root beer ice cream floats. Hersheys Strawberry & Cream and Sprinkles & Cream flavors are not available in the US.

Who else looked at the shelves behind Joel and thought, " Everything on that shelf is from the U.S. and the shelf you guys are reviewing has NOTHING from the states"? Lololol. Those marshmallows are not the brand we have here and yes, definitely Graham Crackers and a square of Hershey's chocolate is the original recipe. We have orange chocolates in the US. They're usually around the holidays though. The Nerds and related candies are from the former Willy Wonka brand which was a Nestlé (Swiss) brand and then sold again to Ferrara candy. Also, every time you say "American isle," my brain hears "American Idol." So, now that you and everyone seeing this has also read "American Idol," your brain will hear it throughout the video instead. You're welcome. 😄😁

Chocolate chip cookies are not part of smores in the USA. Traditionally, root beer is made from the root of the sassafras tree. The root can also be boiled in water to make tea. In both cases the resulting beverage is not alcoholic. Gatorade was originally developed as an electrolyte replacement drink for the University of Florida football team (nicknamed "Gators").

Watching this video I was reminded of my time living in England and seeing signs for "Real American Beefburgers." Always made me smile since we don't have "beefburgers" -- we have hamburgers (so named because the meat was cooked by German emigrants who cooked meat the "Hamburg" way). I'm a 62-year-old American. I've never seen giant marshmallows though they may exist in the U.S. I've never seen hotdogs sold in a glass jar. Root beer is not beer... it's a soft drink that some Brits say is similar to Dandelion and Burdock. I don't agree but I'm not British! I encourage you to do a taste test with several different brands of American root beer (I like A&W) vs Dandelion and Burdock....

I feel like most of what is found there are reject items and stuff that people associate with America, but we don't actually eat. The hot dogs in a jar definitely creeped me out...you gotta refrigerate those lol. That's an interesting fact about Hershey's. It definitely has a bitter taste to it. I do see hot dogs in a can sometimes. Like whole chickens in a can, they seem a bit sketchy. This is other than Vienna sausages, which have been popular here in Hawaii for 100+ years. Potted meats have been prized by Pacific islanders for 200 years already, from when it was "Sailor food". I have a 1915 receipt for a case lot of Vienna sausage, to a Big Island general store. Spam hit the market in 1937. It was widely exported. In WWII. Hawaii residents were predisposed to like it when it showed up. My Grandfather refused to serve it as he ate too much of it in the War. He would raise & butcher one cow a year, keeping the family in beef. Pork was rarely served for breakfast only. Grandpa had a heart attack in 1957, so long cal was a way of life with them early on. As a kid we are like kings. My Mom remarried a wanna be happy in 1981, and good eating was vastly reduced, 1970s college student chow (?) Became the norm.

Can confirm -- I've lived in both St. Louis and Chicago and made the trip to Jungle Jim's every single time I came out to Cincinnati. If anyone is ever in that area, make that a priority! I stocked up on over $200 in just cheeses, meat, pickles (the pickle section is huge) and some German/Polish stuff that I can't find out by me. Worth it.

What's visible in the background at 6:45, looking in another direction, looks quite American. Several varieties of Kellogg's cereal, as well as Old El Paso kits for Mexican food (I guess somewhat Americanized). Graham crackers are different from digestive biscuits. And root beer is not beer, and not much like it. It's a sweet non-alcoholic carbonated drink with its own flavor. You might want to try it in a video (C'mon, you really want to). One KZbin video that it's suggesting I watch next is "New Zealand family tries American soda pop", and the thumbnail has two well-known brands of root beer, Mug and A&W, displayed along with Coke and others.

Old El Paso actually originated in El Paso, then was bought out by a canning company from New Mexico. It is now a General Mills brand. It's what is known as "Tex-Mex".

When I was growing up, we had an A&W drive-up restaurant/burger joint. It was 50s themed, with the jukebox song selectors at the table. Really good old fashioned greasy food. Every Friday, the locals that owned classic cars would basically take over the place. Damn… that was a fun time :)

Smores made with chocolate chip cookies would be like killing two birds with one stone, don't you think? There wouldn't be any be to add the chocolate component since it would already be in the cookie. However, it would make for a sweeter treat than our traditional smores made with graham crackers and chocolate.

I live in Arlington,Washington state, and I just watched your piece on the American aisles at British supermarkets. Just wanted to mention that when you were talking about A & W Root Beer, A & W is a chain of fast food Hamburger restaurants. They have pretty much disappeared in the US, but very popular in Canada. Root Beer is a type of soda pop. Here is a tip, but some root beer and vanilla ice cream. Put a couple of scoops of the ice cream in a tall glass or cup, and pour in the root beer over it. Pour it slowly, as it will quickly rise to the top of the glass however. Grab a spoon and a straw, and enjoy! Would love to know your thoughts...Keep the videos coming, as I find them enjoyable!! Cheers to you both

They should just call it the Junk Food section. I've never seen a package of giant marshmallows like that in the US. But, all of the rest is very common. People overseas always get confused when they see root beer. Like sarsaparilla, it is one of the oldest carbonated soft drinks in the world. Root beer is a sweet North American soft drink traditionally made using the root bark of the sassafras tree Sassafras albidum or the vine of Smilax ornata (known as sarsaparilla, also used to make the soft drink, sarsaparilla) as the primary flavor. Root beer is typically but not exclusively non-alcoholic, caffeine-free, sweet, and carbonated. Like beer, it usually has a thick and foamy head. A well-known use is to add vanilla ice cream to make a root beer float.
