The AMERICAN CROW | Smart and Unique

The American crow is very familiar and found over a great deal of North America. At home in our cities, parks, neighborhoods, and backyards. These canny corvids are highly intelligent and can remember people. Let's get more familiar with this wonderful bird.
One bird they are commonly mistaken for is their much larger cousin the Raven. These majestic birds have some similarities however their size differs as does their bill. The clever American crow is found throughout most of the lower 48 states outside the southwestern deserts, and from east to west in Canada. One of the most adaptable birds, crows have benefited from living around people. taking advantage of places such as agricultural fields, roadsides, and garbage dumps.
There isn’t much these large corvids won’t eat. Seeds, nuts, berries, fruit, grains, many kinds of small animals like mice, toads, earthworms, even garbage, and carrion. Other food items include aquatic animals, like fish, mussels, clams, or young turtles, and different kinds of insects as well as crop pests which is a good thing for farmers. American crows will also eat eggs and nestlings of many different species of other birds.
The male and female build the nest, even their young from previous years may help. Anywhere from 3-9 eggs may be laid, and they could have one or two broods depending. American crows are full of interesting behaviors, for one they are highly social birds that are quite intelligent. They have remarkable memory. They also have tight-knit families, rarely is there ever just a single crow, usually at least one other or more is nearby.

I have watched the crows in my neighborhood for 29 years and have seen many generations grow up and thrive. I won't type out any stories right now. Crows are amazing. I watched a juvenile learn how to glide on thermals by watching one of the local redtail hawk families. The local murder would harass the papa hawk while the juvenile hung back and watched the hawk do it's hawk stuff. Over the years it taught thermal gliding to its own generation. A few years ago I watched a large circle of crows ride the thermals and I had been there at the inception of the thermal rides, which is thrilling.

Great vid! I think one of the most impressive qualities is their militarized approach on searching for food. They set up grids and key points and will communicate to each other on whether or not there’s sustenance. If nothing is around, they have a grid set up so they can sweep through an area. I remember my friend back in the 1960s nursed a crow back to health after being hit by a car. He never caged it and kept it in an open box on his porch. He soon flew but occasionally returned for food for many years. My friend would whistle at the bird flying high and the bird would come for food. He was magnificent. I will never forget that.

What a great story !!! 👏👍👍 I had rescued a small bird who flew to my patio in a rain to rest on our patio's rail case with bleeding beak !! Our maid glued the beak !! I was so worried if the glue was toxic...,but it was o.k. ! We fed her & kept her in our maid lady's room with her kept an eye on that bird ! Less than a week ,we understood that the bird was healed & ready to fly out .I didn't wanna say good by . We let her out ,she flew ,but came right back ! And she flew again a bit further & she repeated & repeated that ,each time with more distances ,then she flew back & sat on the staircase of the patio looking straight into my eyes looking sad , she was telling me that she didn't wanna say good---by ,then she looked at our maid ,I told her that it was o.k.,we were very sad to see her go ,but she belongs to the sky & nature & I'd remember her & think of her as I stare at the open sky ,so she could go ! She understood !!! She flew away as I shouted " Please stay safe & take care !! We love you !" It was more than 40 years ago ,but I've never forgotten !! It opened my eyes !!! I used to think that birds were not so keen ,or smart & we couldn't develop a real friendship .I realized that I was so wrong !! I knew they had feelings & emotions & souls ! But,not like that !! Most people do not understand the nature of birds and the amazing relationship you can have if you just open your heart to them. It is a very deep and very intense feeling as if certain birds can get to know you. I have several different birds that have a very strange but amazing kinship with. You can not fully explain this to most people (the ones who lack warmth). I believe people with sensitive and loving hearts have this connection with God's beautiful creation.

I had crows in my yard, they liked the corn feeder and the pecan tree. One day watching them, I noticed one bird had a very peculiar gate. This individual was missing his right foot, no clue how he injured himself. There on the ground with him was another family member and they had extra guards posted. Over the next five years I saw the handi-capable crow numerous times. He always had a buddy on the ground with him and at least two members posted as guards. The altruistic nature of this interaction gave me a new appreciation for this species. Happy birthday Lesley's mama.

I love this about them. One windy, raw day in early fall., one crow showed another a spot where my fence joined two others. With a tall ceder creating a wind block. The one being given the spot had a injured foot. It gratefully settled out of the wind and sleet. With only room for one, the other stood guard over his injured friend. Perching in an bare tree, in the weather. Such caring.

This is so true. These guys are amazing. In my dad's old yard, he had protective netting over a few plants. One day, I saw a crow that had his foot caught in the netting, and couldn't fly away. As I went to assist, he made that begging sound mentioned in the video. He stayed amazingly calm as I freed his foot. For years afterwards, that bird would come up and actually perch on my arm or shoulder most of the times he saw me. The best wild friend I've ever had.

One day, Moms's neighbor heard the crow calling in my father's voice to call Mom out to the yard.. I have been feeding the crows in my yard for a year or more. One day I noticed one that was limping and I saw his foot was injured. A few days later I saw him again but his whole foot and lower part of his leg was missing. I started feeding him and I named him Hoppy. When he sees me come out the front door, he flies right into my tree. Now all of his friends come too. I like having Hoppy in my yard.

I continued to feed him for many months and then one day he didn't come back to my yard and has not been back for several weeks. Crows in this area do not migrate so I don't know what happened to him, but it makes me very sad that I don't see my special friend every day.

Last year there was a family of four crows hanging out near my employer's building. I started throwing pieces of bread in the parking lot, along with some seed and peanuts. After one week, one of the four came up to our locked warehouse glass door and started tapping his beak on the glass. He saw me inside the warehouse! A few days later he tapped on the main office door, near where my desk was situated. It was such an amazing behavior! I figured that one of the parents sent him because he was the smallest of the four. I will always be fond of that special little guy!

When we had a lot of Steller's Jays in our neighborhood, they figured out that tapping on our glass skylight would get them a peanut. I think they taught it to their young, too-a couple of generations of jays did that over several years. Later an unfortunate number of trees were destroyed during a development binge in the neighborhood and the jays all left, but we won't forget their antics.

​@@richardsandoval2899 they tend to be more receptive and trusting of children. i was a kid when i first started hanging out with those crows. it was just a small family group of 3-4 when i first started feeding them (i was ~12 ish) and by the time i was 17 it had grown to several dozen birds. on the weekends they knew i had school off and would wake me up early in the morning by sitting on my windowsil cawing very loudly and pecking at the glass. they wanted me to go outside and hang out with them (which usually meant food) it was astonishing just how much of my life that they understood just by observing me. im going to be 21 in a few months, i moved away from that town back in early 2020, i really miss my birds. i didnt realize just what a huge part of my life and identity they were until i found myself waking up in the morning to nothing but the sounds of loud trucks and construction work. i've tried to get the local crows that hang out around the supermarkets to trust me, but they're very skittish and it's just not the same.

In my cultures stories, Ojibwe, the crow used to be this brilliant, rainbow colored bird. I do not recall the entire story offhand but the crow ended up flying too close to the sun and the sun scorched the crows feathers. That is why you can still see the slight rainbow iridescence in their feathers

Sorry I keep commenting, lol. Crows can learn to speak human language, mostly when in captivity, but there have been cases of them doing it in the wild. One of my favorite stories of this was a crow living in a Midwestern college town in the 70’s. The crow spent time near a path where many people frequently walked their dogs. The crow learned to whistle and say “here boy, here boy”. A few people said they thought the crow was actually entertaining itself because it could sometimes get confused dogs to come to it. Truly amazing birds.

They can mimic our language, but that's not the same as speaking it and understanding it. However, the fact they know mimicking us is a way of communicating (even if the sounds make no sense to them) tells us much about how smart and social they are.

@@cheetman1 They certainly understand that it is our form of communication, I can't argue that. I did watch a nature documentary about birds mimicking sounds. You'd imagine that was a entertaining watch, right? For the most part, it was, until they showed an example of a bird indigenous to rain forest regions. They had begun mimicking the sound of the chain saws because they head them so often. How depressing is that? Birds mimicking the sound of the tool being used to chop down their habitat!

I have spent years cultivating friendships with all of my corvids, Crows and Ravens alike. I live in the mountains and have a large yard. I feed them treats, talk to them, and leave random shiny objects. Done this for 20+ years. I keep a feeder, suet, and corn. They know me and my car. I get happy greetings from them all over. My fenced yard is a haven for them, and they know it. Eat my worms, snakes, mice, whatever you like. They know it. I do leave treats like potato chips (They love them) and random other bread, but it's that safe space that they really like.

I lived in Japan for 17 years and made friends with a crow. It took about a year and a half before he would sit with me on the park bench to share lunch. He was funny because he’d follow me back to the elementary school where I worked and knew my schedule somehow and would hang out, tapping on the window of the classroom I was in. I named him Rook-after the chess piece not the bird. It’s nice to think if I make it back to Kagoshima, he’d stop and say hi.

Crows understand that we are too. Crows and people have similar diets, so we have been encountering one another for generations now. They figured out long ago that we are smart and have the ability to shape and exploit our environment in ways that they can't, so they stick close to us.

I do the exact same thing now. A crow and what i suppose is his spouse come around my house every day at 9 am for almonds :D He lands on the roof an looks at me, while i am at the comupter. Sometimes he also try to get my attention by pecking the roof with his beak. I have a metal roof, and i can also hear his little steps as he waddles across. @@jefftoonstra5087 You should look for a clip on youtube of the raven trying to steal fresh meat from a bald eagle. The raven stands behind the eagle and pecks at it's tail feathers. The eagle will turn and give a few pecks in return, but it doesn't want to leave the meat. The raven knows all it has to do is take the odd peck and wait. Eventually, the eagle will get pissed off enough to turn and attack the raven..at which point the raven takes flight, flies over the eagle, grabs the, now, unguarded meat, and flies away!! Planning, strategy and execution, sure signs of high intelligence, I think you'd agree !

I have watched a murder eat grubs picked from a mowed, sun-warmed hill... They knew exactly when it would be ideal to arrive, and would barely poke underground to snatch these large grubs... Would toss them back like mini shrimp cocktail in one gulp. Absolutely amazing to witness their incredible intelligence and social cooperative efforts.

This Is cool. I've been feeding the same family of Crows "Cheese-its" for years. 2 boxes everyday. Same place, same time, everyday. They are there waiting for me. They know my car. My uncle was at Yosemite cooking breakfast, and when it was ready exactly five Crows swooped down and cleared the plate. They totally counted and knew how many would get a slice. My aunt hollered but it was worth it to see the teamwork.

Crows are one of my fav birds. They are very smart. I had the privilege of seeing a fully lame crow unlock a flight cage after watching only once how the cage's new lock work. This crow had worked it only a few minutes and bam! The cage was fully open, door swinging open. The lock took 2 human hands to operate. The crow was able to manipulate this lock with his beak and one of his lame claws. Amazing.

At a nature center in Illinois, during the 70s & 80s, was an outdoor cage with a crow in it. The sign next to the cage said “My name is Loudmouth, I can say hello!”. My sister and I said hello to Loudmouth the Crow at every visit for years. The last time we saw it, we said hello a few times, and started to walk away, and then heard a loud “Hello!” in a crow’s voice. They can mimic sounds somewhat.

We had a Crow stay with us when I was a child in New York near Buffalo. This was in the mid 40’s. My mom would hang our clothes on the line year round with the typical wood clothespins. Just the slip-Ons. Slip on they did however Pu Pu (our crow) loved slipping all of them off. Not popular with my Mother. I love your channel and creation. We appreciate and encourage the crows on our farm because they do chase the predatory birds away when they try to eat our chickens. My grandfather, may he rest in peace, had a crow friend that waited for him to come home from work each night. Grampy always had a treat for the crow; they were good buddies.

We have had a pair for about 10 years that show up to eat from our turkey feeder. Every spring they bring their young. Good way to get rid of our food scraps. Was told that crows will defend their territory from eagles. I have seen them dive bomb them.

I saw a Fish Crow mob a Red-Tailed Hawk on the roof of a neighbor’s house. S/he seemed to be proud of her/himself once the Hawk was driven away, and cawed with glee near the roof when the Hawk was gone. 😁

I've recently had a similar experience to that of you and your brother. I've recently started leaving unsalted peanuts in the shells and unsalted trail mix out by a trio of pine trees at the edge of the property of the apartment building I live in. I haven't been doing it every day, just when I come home from work in the early afternoon and I only work three days a week. When I came home a few days ago, there was a single crow casually hanging out on the lawn in front of the space I always park in. I swear it was waiting for me. So, I went up to my apartment and grabbed the peanuts and trail mix because I'm pretty sure it was making sure I didn't forget to serve up some grub. 😄 When I got back down to the yard, guess who was casually waiting over by the trio of pine trees? I walked over and left the usual array of snacks and went to sit at a picnic table a healthy distance away. The crow picked up a peanut and flew off. Shortly afterwards I heard cawing and what sounded like a response from further away. It wasn't long before there were three crows partaking in the booty. One of which was quite amusing to watch as he kept grabbing up as many peanuts as possible in his beak before carrying them off to wherever it is they take them. They all carry the peanuts off to some unknown place. Maybe once they're a bit more used to me, I'll try to discover where they go. At least they eat some of the trail mix there on the spot. Whatever they don't finish gets eaten by the local squirrels, who have a habit of showing up shortly after the crows do. I throw some peanuts and trail mix out for them too on the paved area where I usually sit. Apparently, squirrels have a pretty good memory. 😄 PS: Please wish your mother a very happy birthday for me. Without her, I would never have been encouraged to start my new hobby of crow (and squirrel) watching!

Crows are great! They're so intelligent, and great fliers...I have seen them do aerobatics in the sky over the farm where I live, especially when divebombing one of the red tailed hawks or just playing in the wind. One time years ago I was on a morning walk and saw a gathering of hundreds of crows on some telephone wires. I'd heard of crow funerals, but these crows starting singing together! It was like a bird chorus! I've never seen anything like that since...it was wonderful!😊

They are very pretty with the irresident hue in their feathers..And, they make a raquet when they need too..They do have some pretty calls thou...They are very curious and have majestic looking eyes...I for many years would have a large family come and visit me because they know I would put out food for them.When I would talk to them they would communicate back.They have even brought me gifts as a way to say thank you...The thank yous would include acorn shells, twigs, sticks, rocks,pebbles and sometimes dead insects...They definately know my face and my call and whistle when heading outside to feed them..It's something else to see...I feel safe when they are around...They seem somewhat protective of me just by the way they look at me and those around me and watch others behaviors towards me...Love birds...

I can't actually feed from my apartment, but have a 3km route i walk each day, cutting through many, many crow boundaries. The ten pound bag of peanut halves on my walker shrinks variably through the seasons. Being a disabled person who despises the city, these lovelies put nature right smack into my life. For many years of surgeries and battles with chronic pain, they are my lifeline. This morning, after a week in the hospital for a new hip, i was able to walk a few blocks en route to yet another medical appointment. I was mobbed in the most wonderful fashion, with a behaviour that spoke concern and joy, with all sorts of different display behaviour. When i experience the 'yeah yeah food, but how are YOU??' from my 'frens' , its kinda overwhelming. Having another fly in front of me and land a metre from my feet, look at me , then spit up his/her crop of peanut halves, then look at me again, before gobbling them back up and flying off just melted my heart. Was most definitely NOT the usual spit up to reorganise, so just stunned me. When i'm out of peanuts, which is a horror story in itself, I walk a totally different direction, in an area with far fewer crows. Its a crow 'bad place' so seldom even see them. Always glad to resupply and walk with my friends again. Was thrilled to see this on my feed Lesley, many, many thanks. Hopefully health will someday allow me to get over to Still Creek, its been decades. Cheers :)

@Eric Maher I walk every morning and feed crows as I go. It started with my buying and not like a turkey sausage. Instead of throwing it away I cut it into little pieces and brought it along in a baggie. When I saw a crow on an overhead line near me I clicked my tongue and tossed a couple pieces of sausage high in the air (to catch it's eye). I now carry several cut up franks with me and at times have more than a dozen winging in for a morning nosh all along my route. There are also a couple of ravens that sometimes show up and sneak into the group. There is a downside. Some must hang around my home because if I come out later in the day they may also show up and make me feel quilty when I don't have anything to toss down.

When I was on vacation in London, I got a chance to feed crows for the first time. The name of the species of crow in the UK is the Carrion Crow. In St. James’s Park, I fed the crows Chik-Fil-A waffle fries that I bought from the airport back at home and stored in my backpack. The moment didn’t last for long, but I was glad to feed crows, at least for a short period. Also, fun fact: crows are revered in East Asian cultures (in Japan, the crow-god is called Yatagarasu), and have been depicted as three-legged and as a symbol of the sun. They also represent divine intervention and guidance. Plus, that clip of that Crow making sounds that are almost catlike at 3:30 was so cute! 🥰😻Last but not least, your story of the crow remembering you years after the fact was so sweet! 😊 I wonder if the crows that I fed in London (or their descendants) would recognize me if I was to return there. Carrion Crows have a different accent too! They have a slightly higher pitched, longer caw, which to me just sounds like... A crow. American Crows remind me of the first time I heard a train horn while talking on the phone with an ex in the US, a sound that I know exists, but only from TV or films! The caws in this video sound like every depiction of crows in American culture, it's quite a different sound! They have a different inflection!

We have one crow who knows I carry walnuts. If she sees me, she will fly to a nearby branch in my line of sight. I partially crack the shell for her, just to be nice. Otherwise she positions it on the road so that a car's tires do the work. None of the other crows have picked up this behavior, but I have hopes for her next brood.

I've always taken great comfort from the presence of these lovely birds! I talk to them as best I can. Some time back when I was staying at Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County, there was a crow who would rush a local golden eagle, yelling 'AY-UP!" until the eagle would fly away. They are beloved creatures and I thank you for educating people about their humor and intelligence.

I love crows! They are so much fun to watch! One time a few years ago, my indoor cat got outside. I could not find him but I kept hearing a crow "cawing." Then I started thinking that if I found the crow, I might find my cat! Sure enough, my cat was sitting at the bottom of the pine tree and the crow was at the top! Another time more recently, I was in my backyard tossing food to a few wild turkeys. As they walked around pecking the seeds off the ground just feet away from me, there were several crows just above us making a big fuss! I'm not sure what it meant but it sure caught their attention!

Awesome video!! I learned so much! I can't believe that crow remembered you after an entire year. What remarkable birds! Just yesterday, I saw four Crows mob a Sharp Shinned Hawk and chase it out of the area. It is very handy to have Crows around :-) I always wondered why some crows have white spots on their feathers. At 1:23, when the crow spread out its wings, there was a white spot on its left wing, and I often see crows' feathers specked with white. Sometimes, I think it's just dirt. I want crows in my yard to warn my other wildlife about the hawks that prey on them! A couple of years ago, a dead rabbit showed up in the drainage ditch in front of my house. The next morning, all of the rabbit except a bit of fur was gone, and three crows were doing a happy dance in the road where the corpse had been. I was very grateful to them, because I learned that the city would not pick up and dispose of the dead animal for me.

I usually have to take down the bird feeders around this time of year because of the hawks. I am sorry to hear about that poor rabbit, but at least it made a good meal for those crows. :-) They are very helpful birds that play a big part in the eco system.

Crow's have been an important part of my life since I was a teenager! Crow's have been a symbol of good luck and good fortune to come for me since the late 1980's and early 90's, before I even became an avid birder. Crow's are by far my favorite birds on earth! I saw my local "crow gang" try to bait a Red-shouldered Hawk out of his fresh rabbit kill. It's a known crow tactic. One crow walked slowly up to the hawk who was standing on the rabbit he had just killed. The other crows were in nearby branches warching. The hawk lunged at this intruding crow but held on to the rabbit. Eventually the crows gave up. The crows try to get the hawk away from the kill and then steal it.

Years ago, I got to hear a talk by Kevin McGowan, who has studied crows for many years. The crows around Ithaca, New York, knew his car so well that they followed him around and gathered nearby immediately when he stopped. He got a call from a woman who was very upset because, wait for it, she had the same make, model, and color car as Kevin. As you can imagine, having a huge flock of crows suddenly descending on her car was quite a surprise! I hope she eventually came to enjoy having their attentions-I know I would have been ecstatic to suddenly be friends with so many crows. I love crows, as all Corvids. The "virus of crowlove" has seriously infected me since 2019, when a pair of magpies had breaded in a tree 1 meter away from my balcony. Don't know why, my attention often goes first to the crows wherever i am. Though i love every animal 🙏 . In my backyard i've made friends with the crows, as i feed them with nuts and peanuts during winter, and sometimes all year, when i meet the 2 or 3, that recognize and sing/play/talk to me occasionally. Magpies in my region are a bit more reserved, or how can i say, they rather stay at theirs 🤔. Nevermind i love them all. Thank you so so much for this stunning video 🙏🙂🤗!!! Early this spring I started feeding some baby squirrels, I was feeding them unsalted peanuts in the shells and some shelled nuts. About a week or 2 went by and a crow stopped by. I was surprised that he also seemed to like those peanuts in the shells and he came by every morning at feeding time of the squirrels so I started leaving him his own pile. After a few days he brought a friend, 2 days after that and it was 3 crows. I went online for food ideas and started leaving them a pile of food every morning. By around 2 week it grew to about 16 crows and by that time their pile and variety of food was getting quite large. There was one large crow who would at times, come to my roll up door and call until I would come out. I would talk to him and he to me and I would bring him some more food. A few would get pretty close to me when I would feed them and when they would see me laying out their breakfast they seemed to get excited and call out. Some mornings there would be only one there but as soon as I would lay out their food it would call out over and over again and before long the whole crew would show up to eat. There are some very, very tall trees in the area and they often sit at the very tops of them. Once after laying out their meal, l could hear one calling from the distance, l walked out into the open where he could see me and call him, as soon as he saw me he started gliding over to me. I pointed out his breakfast and he went to it. It was pretty cool.

I have seen multiple crows repeatedly perching on the branches of pine trees behind my backyard, too, especially in the summer. I never would’ve guessed that was possibly a cooperative breeding family unit of crows or just crows looking for a communal roosting spot.

I've liked crows since I was a kid. I have a few groups around MetroVan that I feed occasionally. When I was working around Commercial Dr in Vancity, I started to feed some crows walking through a park on my way back from Tim's, and after a couple days of ripping off small chunks of my breakfast sandwich for the 4-7 crows in the park it went to 30-50 crows showing up. They followed me for a couple blocks after the park, and I felt bad because I wanted to eat still so I couldn't feed them all... So the next day I bought them their own sandwich and made sure to rip it up into sufficient pieces and tossed handfuls of bits for them, and kept that up for the next almost month...so now when I go to Commerical Dr I get slowly surrounded by crows in all the trees and landing on cars.

I made a friend of a family of crows that I starting feeing about a year ago. They see me walking home from the store and will fly to a tree in my path and wait for me to pass to fly to another. Very smart and capable of making many different sounds. One will get on a really close to me and make guttering sounds in it's throat like it's trying to tell me something important. Love these birds and enjoy watching them play while flying.

They are very often found in the car parks of motorway service stations and retail parks, as well as more rural areas. I just adore crows. One amazing thing I learned about them is that they are closely related to the Birds-of-Paradise. It's surprising at first that they are closely related to such brightly colored tropical birds, but actually makes sense when you look at the subtle iridescence of a crow's feathers.

We've noticed in the morning at the bus stop, alot of crows coming from their nearby nesting spot, which I think is at the university about a half mile away and in the evening, see them heading back in that direction.
