The American Pit Bull Terrier is banned in the UK as one of the 4 illegal breeds to own due to countless attacks on children over the years. Anneka is not convinced that this dog deserves to be banned so has travelled to Italy where it is legal to own one in order to make up her mind if this dog is indeed dangerous or simply a 'Government Scapegoat' - In other words, ban the breed not licence and control ownership and breeding.

Genetics definitely have a factor. Obviously not a dogs fault, but they were bred to be aggressive, which is what makes them a harder breed to own. Unfortunately theres too many people who don’t put in that work to raise an aggression prone dog like a pitbull

I don't think that they're aggressive dogs I think that's a misconception. I think that they can fight, more specifically when they fight they remind me of somebody who sees red and just doesn't stop. I feel a lot of people don't understand what aggression is. I also feel that it is a dog that is difficult and well a lot of people don't realize it any dog that needs to be worked and doesn't get work is going to have problems.

I don’t like Pits, but I appreciate this educational video. I learned that they are working dogs with immense strength, energy, and intelligence. They REQUIRE thorough and consistent training. They are aggressive towards dogs of the same gender and they don't tolerate smaller animals very well. Pit terriers are NOT for novice or sedentary dog owners. They need to be in an active environment with a very patient and focused trainer. Thank you for all of this information. ❤

We had a visitor a few years back (my avatar) who we determined was feral. The intelligence and intense desire to work can be a challenge to people. Since our Buddy survived for 8 months on his own, he isn't food obsessed and is extremely careful about what he eats (even if familiar food). We are very careful around other dogs (espcially males like him) but he's provolked attacks by barking at loose dogs in our neighborhood. The problem with this breed is they focus intensely when fighting, so much so, they seem to turn off pain. The best method we've found when trying to break up a fight with other pitties is a dog horn. This seems to shock them to distraction where commands can be heeded. If I pick him off the groud he immediately goes limp (like a puppy).

My wife and I have a Staffordshire Terrier-boxer mix that was rescued from a dogfighting ring. He still bears scars from what was done to him, and he's still pretty high-strung (presumably from the abuse he received from the first few years of his life). His foster owners did great work training him for over a year before we got him (poor guy kept getting passed over, probably b/c he was a pittie and b/c he wasn't a puppy). As other people have pointed out, pitties are more work than some other dogs. They're bigger, stronger, and faster than most other dogs; Chihuahuas and other little dogs are far likelier to be aggressive toward both other people and other dogs (whether friends or strangers), but getting bit by an ankle-biter hurts less than getting bit by a German Shepherd, a Rottweiler, or, yes, a pittie. That's why you have to put in more time and effort than with some other breeds. However, if you have patience and aren't lazy (as some owners unfortunately are), pitties are a blast to play with and make for great companions, walking partners, and snuggle buddies (to the point that our big softie thinks he's a lap dog when we're on the couch).

That's probably an American Pitbull Terrier you have. Staffordshire terriers are larger, thicker, and not as agile. True American pitbull terriers look exactly like Tina. 8:10 This is such a great point. My leashed dog was attacked by a much smaller dog that wasn't on a leash, unfortunately my dog hurt the other dog before I could pick my dog up. The owner came running over screaming that I had a dangerous dog and that it shouldn't be allowed in public, I blasted back that they were a terrible person for having let their aggressive dog run wild but i don't blame the dog because IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON A LEASH. My neighbor ALWAYS lets his tiny dogs run around unleashed and they basically run around the neighborhood all the time. When coming home one day, his little dog attacked my leashed dog as we were getting out of our car to go home. When my dog finally bit back, we were the ones that got in trouble for it. His dogs still run wild, but I no longer feel comfortable leaving my house with my dog because what if it happens again? He’s never not leashed but now he has to wear a muzzle at all times outside because my neighbor can’t control his dogs.

And you wanna know what this lady does. She doesn’t scold me she pulls out her phone and starts recording the damage screaming “my baby, my baby!” 💯 tried to get evidence to sue me later. We are loved by a female America Strattfordshire Bull Terrier, she was a rescue…she showed her colors in the beginning (I think she was abused and in a puppy mill situation) we went through a lot of pillows, a few cleats and crash course lease training. Now she’s a cuddle muffin, loves car rides and guides our blind lab mix dog out the back door to make sure she doesn’t hit anything. They are HIGH energy and need to be socialized, they love to latch on similar to the Malinois and, from our experience, jump up walls to catch lizards, balls, ropes. Just like Chows, this breed gets a bad reputation because of poor handling. VERY loyal and a wee bit jealous of affection.

Anyone can guess what kind of dog is by looking at it and comparing it to what the pedigree says it's supposed to look like but there is no way of knowing unless you DNA test. For example if you have a DNA test done in your dog generally it's not going to be 100% anything. It'll tell you the breed type in the probability... Trying to find out what bloodline it is is nearly impossible without a known sample or specimen from that specific bloodline. I've done this a lot! My whole point being there's nobody on this Earth that's going to be able to look at a pitbull and say it's a Pitbull without having papers or a DNA done because there are too many look-alike breeds and there's too many variables.. I think the real problem is that there's currently no reliable way to tell if an individual pitbull breed dog will turn out like Cesar Milan's Junior or the type of dog that will kill or maim. And I've gotta add having read through some anti-pitbull sites to see what they were saying I found many stories of pitbull related fatalities coming from family pets in standard family environments. There didn't seem to be a direct correlation between deaths and abusive or criminal owners. And taking that in mind I think the worst thing breed advocates can do is convince the general public that theses kinds of dogs aren't that different from most others. If the only trait that a would be owner thinks they can expect that's out of the ordinary is excpetional athleticism they could be caught off guard and end up in a really bad situation.

The problem is the bastardization of the word "Pitbull". There is one breed with the word pitbull in it's name and unless you know the lineage of the dog that's attacked someone, most likely it's a mixed dog and not an American Pitbull Terrier at all. Often times too many people are going strictly off the looks of dogs and it's extremely unreliable.

Interesting video. I've grown up with the Pit and have one to this day. They're certainly a breed you have to be careful with around other dogs. Not saying they can't be friends with other dogs, but you always have to be alpha and ready for anything. We go to dog parks and she doesn't care about other dogs, only their humans. She will let other dogs lick and sniff her (she's intact) but she does have a breaking point if they take it too far (usually with a warning). I never get nervous with her around people or toddlers but with other dogs, the leash is tight.. Even as an 8 week old puppy she was confident and stood her ground around any full grown dog that didn't like her. Let's just say people who don't know about the pit will be wary of their intimidating presence (which is what you want). Her looks alone deter dangerous unpredictable people but she would seriously go home with anyone! This breed was built to be game catch dogs, they were never bred to hurt humans. Do not buy this dog if you think it'll guard your house, however, it will let you know if someone is around. Chipmunks and squirrels are the bane of her existence haha.

There needs to be a clear distinction between the very few pure working lines, like in this video, and the street pitbulls that most of us will encounter. Thank you. This is one of the most objective (and some would say pro pit) documentary i have seen. It shows what the breed is actually about. When properly raised they are amazing. Maybe im biased because mine was the best dog ive ever had. But then I socialized her and trained her to be a good citizen. She was loved by everyone she met and loved them too. People don't do their research then make bad decisions out of frustration and ignorance. Learning about the breed and being honest whether you can handle it doesn't make you weak, itmakes you an adult human being that cates about dogs and people. Yes i raised a good citizen pit, but i also know that i (especially now, with physical disabilities) couldn't handle say ,a malinois and be able to keep it happy. Being honest with yourself saves everybody from heartache.

Wonderful video as always!👍👍👌❤️! It's true that some breeds require a different approach at raising them and isn't a breeze. They need attention too, and blaming the breed is the easier way out. Even in India, due to some attack cases discussions go around whether they should ban the breed or not, and I think all these factors must be taken in consideration.

Love your channel and another brilliant episode. Next time come back to South Africa where you did the episode on Boerbulls, we also have many Bully breeds. Although we hear there’s rumors of banning pits in SA they are still legal today. We have 2 red nose pits and the reason for my comment is that they are both female and one and a half years difference in age. One 7 and a bit and the other just shy of 6. I was warned to not get 2 females when we got the second one, but have never looked back on the decision. I firmly believe the answer was is someone’s comment that I should establish which of them to be the “Alpha”. I decided that I’m the Alpha and pack leader and while they can get at each other when they are barking at the gate sometimes it’s never been more then a show, never anything more then the occasional scratch. They play fight like there’s no tomorrow, the best thing to see. They pin each other down and jump and push. Never ever saw another breed do it this way. I’m hooked. Pitties for life. Just make sure you are a responsible owner. They are not pets. They are family. They will never let you down. Please be kind enough and do the same.

God it's refreshing to see a real American Pitbull terrier. I get so sick of people calling their dogs a pitbull when it's a bully mix. True American pitbull terriers are very lean athletic dogs. I'm a shepherd girl, love all the shepherds, not the show line gsds, only the working line German shepherds, Malinois or Dutch or X herders, X Malinois (GSD x Mal/Dutch). But people talk about the athleticism of the Malinois, a true American Pit Bull Terrier is just as capable if not more so

@@maddogsenglishmen8020 also, I don't know if you're aware, but most of the contracted working dogs are coming from holland. They called them Malinois but they are actually Dutch shepherd, malinois, working line German Shepherd mixes. That's where the name x herder or X Malinois came from.. they do have meticulously kept pedigrees, but they are not purebred. They have brn numbers. But they also outcross with true American Pitbull Terrier and sometimes even other Mastiff breeds. A recent stud dog Malinois was bred to a female Presa Canario and then they will breed them back. It can take six generations to do it properly. So all the people that think they have a purebred Belgian Malinois with a lot more muscle tone and larger heads, that comes from the working line German Shepherd and American Pitbull Terrier

That’s the issue, it’s always ‘these types of dogs’. I do not like to see people comparing the true american pitbull terrier to backyard bred, unstable mutts that happen to have a blocky head. The real American pitbull terrier was selectively bred to only be aggressive towards dogs and other animals, NEVER humans. Why? Humans had to handle the American pitbull terriers or bull and terriers at the time going into the pit and potentially have to break up fights. It would not be reasonable or rational to breed them to be human aggressive.

Nigdy nie lubiłem pitbulli. Wielokrotnie dochodziło do zwarcia z moimi rottwielerami (miałem łącznie trzy psy rottki w życiu). Raz jeden amstaff prawie odgryzł mi policzek (tu była tylko i wyłącznie moja wina). Teraz przez zupełny przypadek mam pitbullterriera, szwagier zostawił psa i wyjechał zagranice. Ok, spróbuje. Powiem jedno: najlepszy przyjaciel jakiego kiedykolwiek miałem. Czasem trenujemy pływanie, podbieganie pod stromą górkę z obciążeniem, potem troche szelki do WP, wrócimy do domu, troche sie prześpi (15-20min) i dalej gotowy do zabawy.

Cities don't need to completely ban a breed when they make it twice as hard for the people who own them to find a place to live. The city makes it mandatory to spay or neuter dogs belonging to certain breeds. They make it mandatory to have a dog licensed with the city and charge a high-priced licensing fee for certain breeds. They make it mandatory that certain breeds be leashed and muzzled in city limits. They make it illegal for a dog to be tethered with a chain or rope. The city uses the H.O.A. to impose more restrictions and regulations aimed towards certain breeds. They make owning certain breeds so difficult that people don't just choose not to own them. There's a lot of people who want every dog they can fit under the umbrella term pitbull to be destroyed. These people don't care what breed a dog is; if it looks anything like a pitbull, they want it destroyed, and they're looking for any reason they can find to make that happen. This causes the owners of these breeds to live with the constant fear that their dog will be taken from them and be destroyed. Look up what happened to Floyd Boudreaux and his dogs.

Very usefull and educational video. The answer is for sure both, depends on our behaviour and training we provide them. It's true that pit bulls have more potential to be aggressive than some other breeds, but they are also very smart and easy learning, so if we work with them and teach them not to be aggressive they will not be. Dog behaviour is like a mirror, how we treat them in that way they will treat others 😉

Outdated breed for an outdated purpose. I wouldn't ban them but I would make it so you'd need a license to own one. The difference with these dogs and other "dangerous" dogs is they don't stop when they attack, it's either kill or be killed. Also, they were bred to be dog aggressive and reactive. I would not discontinue the breed however, as their "game" is unmatched and something insane to behold...only for very experienced owners. The propaganda that they are nanny dogs and should be adopted out of shelters is not doing anyone any good. Just get a lab.

and I guarantee you only a very small portion of these dogs were real American pitbull terriers. unfortunately any dog with a blocky head is usually lumped into the ‘pitbull’ catagory, causing extreme inflation of bite statistics. Imagine if the golden retriever, flat coat retriever, labrador retriever, chesapeake bay retriever and curly coat retriever were all lumped into one type/breed and not distinguished in bite statistics. The true American pitbull terrier is not human aggressive, that is wholly uncharacteristic of the breed. They were bred for bull baiting and dogfighting, and in these blood sports these highly aggressive dogs had to be handled by humans before going into the pit. Sometimes they would have to break up fights. So it would be completely irrational to breed these dogs to be aggressive towards humans

And also, the statistics DO state that the vast majority of lethal attacks on humans and other dogs is caused by dogs of the Pitbull type. I've researched this topic in depth for my job, and it's really not realistic to just blame these incidents on only the owners and breeders - these dogs do pose a lethal threat to other dogs. Most are docile towards humans, yes, but there are too many reported and well-documented cases of "extremely social and obedient" dogs of the Pitbull type suddenly turning on their prey drive and overlaying that drive to humans, especially children. This is perhaps not "human-aggression" as such but misplaced prey drive. The results, however, are the same.

The problem isn't the owner, the aggression or anything like that, 80 percent of the problem is that when they DO bite they don't let go which is something police dogs have to be TRAINED it doesn't come naturally to any other dog, putting a pitbull next to a baby and saying its proof that theres nothing wrong is like those morbidly obese people that say "look! Im exercising and i never overeat therefore my obesity is genetic" Dogs have an instinct to let go (and retreat) when they feel pain, in dog fighting letting go means death, every case of those thousands of news stories bystanders were beating those dogs during the 911 call and they just don't let go when they're in that mode

They aren't cousins they are twins. The only reason the amstaff even exist is because the apbt was rejected by the ukc. So the old dogmen were chasing papers and they renamed their pitbulls American Staffordshire terriers so the ukc would register them. There is absolutely no difference between an apbt and an amstaff. All they did was create a "new name" for the apbt simply to get them registered with the ukc. John colby was one of the main ones wrapped up in that. Once the ukc rejected him he stopped pursuing papers. But the other dogmen really wanted to register their apbt's in the ukc. So the came up with a "new name" amstaff.

It is sad that innocent toddlers are being attacked but u can not blame a breed out of ignorance and based on emotions... the American pitbull terrier the real gamebred Apbt can not show any aggression towards humans other wise it would of been impossible to handle them while in a match (speaking from an historic point of view).. the dogs doing the attacks are dogs that have been bred by backyard breeders who now days simply breed for looks and money only, not taking anything else into account when pairing up dogs .. which is the complete opposite of how dog breeding should be done.

The animal aggression is from hundreds of years of selective breeding so its not always training its genetics at play as well. Yup. There's so many high potential dogs out there, focusing down on a few breeds is just counterproductive. Besides, its not like pit bull owners would transition to labs, they'd get a large livestock guardian breed. A larger, generally more suspicious of people, alternative. For example, Ive owned 5 giant schnauzers between myself and my parents, and I know I'm much(!) more cautious approaching one of them than a pit in public. Same for any of the livestock specialists.

The REAL American Pit Bull Terrier, as standardized by the ADBA and/or UKC, was, and is, throughout it's history, NEVER bred to be human aggressive. Dating back to the old pit fighting lines, if the dog showed any aggression toward the handler or if it redirected it's bite on the handler before making a game scratch, these dogs would be culled. In other words, any propensity for attacking humans had been removed from the bloodlines or bred out of them. Unless of course, the owner had a real winner on his hands $$$. APBT's are NOT man-biters like the guarding breeds - i.e. Rottweiler, G. Shephard, Cane Corso, Doberman, Akita etc. All-in-all, the vast majority of APBT's should either be friendly or aloof with strangers and extremely loving and devoted with it's human family. But at the end of the day, each dog is an individual with it's own personality---just like people. The problem started when unscrupulous breeders started crossing APBT game dogs with man-biting breeds
