In this video, Emerson's 'The American Scholar' is discussed. "The American Scholar" was a speech given by Emerson on August 31, 1837, to the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Emerson speaks on the connection to nature, understanding of books, and actions so a man can become more educated. Each American scholar must use self-direction to establish confidence and embark on creative endeavors. He also emphasizes the "Duties" of the American Scholar who has become the "Man Thinking". Each scholar is responsible to build a new, distinctly American cultural identity.
