I must say this is one of the very best archery vids on the tube. I enjoyed it greatly , it is a very relaxing and informative vid with NO loud distracting music and clear easy to understand conversations. I love traditional archery of all kinds and am more at home with a recurve but always am anxious to learn more. Thanks for a great vid!

Started watching this video and had to stop because it motivated me to finish the self bow I had started a while ago. Minus the wrist slapping I can't believe how much more fun this old hickory stick is compared to my recurves. Literally puts a smile on my face every time I shoot it and now I can finish this video with more of an understanding.

Im a Longbow shooter, I started way to late in my life, but My start was a Longbow, and still is. Ive been into a lot of investigations when it comes to arrow tests, weights,FOCs,Tapering arrows, spines, size of Feathers, turned or straight. Tested River Cane shafts, but got stuck on Bamboo shafts, which I still use today. Used Wooden Arrows for 8 years, but my last 2 years its only Bamboo. Bought a Grand Plains Longbow, and its really fantastic to shoot with, now Im into my 3rd Grand Plains bow 45lbs, and its so soft to use, no shakes in the bowhand, and very quiet to use. 6 months ago I went from shooting glove, with split finger, to 3 under using a tab, I had som issues in the beginning, but I didn't gave up, and now I have improved my shooting a lot, including a new bow, from spilt finger to 3 under, I also went into Gap shooting, and it works fantastic, on targets or 3D. My favorite is to shoot 3D. Im not a Hunter, but shooting 3D is really my thing. Tested Recurve bows, but it doesn't feel natural, so I stayed with the Longbows now for 10 years. Making my own arrows, not bows yet, but I really LOVE the Longbows!!! And there is constantly new things to learn.

Just do not get the SAS Pioner, that bow is one where grip has to be 100% on same spot for the individual or 90% of people get massive hand shock. If you do get the SAS Pioner, then redo the grip it comes with as this moves too much and do mark a spot on grip or do not have the new grip lower then where the last finger sits on the bow. This way the bow can have a repeatable 95% the same grip that should be close enough to correct the main issue with the bow model. The Bear Montana is probably one of the better bows on the smaller size of 64 inches as the ASL ranges from 64---72 inches usually with only a few at 64 inches, the shortest the bows can be for men in 3D target. I have seen some 60 inch longbows, mainly kids/beginner all fiberglass models like the SAS Robinhood 30--35 pound model. The Bear models of Firebird 30--35 pound and Titian a 22--29 pound are more reflex deflex as the Robhinhood is minor reflex deflex, more to a classic longbow.

This is the first time I've heard someone talk about the double anchor, the same as I've always naturally done. The middle finger+corner of mouth and the thumb knuckle in the back corner of the jaw. I shoot a 72" ASL. 32" draw is not fun. Everything has to be custom made because nobody makes looking enough arrows, bows, etc.
@caseysmith544
@caseysmith544 Жыл бұрын
The double anchor is more a locking style anchor or locking anchor then 2 totally different parts type of anchor that work together the way using a clicker or the arrow at the front. I used this when I am struggling to get a repeatable draw with my standard anchor in split finger with top finger at the cartilage before the ear canal (24--24.5 inch draw this way with minor bent arm) is I will use the thumb to lock behind the jaw if need be.

Yeah, if I had to use a straight handle design, I would look at a forward handle with a smaller depth for my hand size as those bows tend to have less torquing then a standard straight grip, however I love the notched with flat front as with my small hands I can shoot most bows with an ever so slightly loose but full grip, the way these bows were made to be gripped with the bonus of the easy to repeat grip.

very enjoyable video. I used to shoot these style bows years ago. I very much loved them. but these guys are right in that. If you dont shoot these bows regularly and be very dedicated they can make you frustrated. When i was really into these and shot everyday. they will become an extension of your body. And its very odd but man do they shoot right where you look. But you take a break. and its like starting all over again. I struggled with the fact that im not very strong and had to shoot low poundages. That made it tough to use for me mentally. cause i didn’t have the power or cast that those shooting heavier draw weights did. and that what eventually lead me away from these bows.

True, I have an old all fiberglass ASL/flat limb longbow that is duel sided called the Actionbow by Actionrod 8200a 60 inch or 152.5 cm at 36 pounds that I draw to 34--35 pounds at my draw of 24--25.5 inches or 61--62.24 cm, a longbow made anywhere from 1961 to end of 1979, and it is a unique bow in that one it was a micro backset when new, but the limb tips took on a micro string follow due to the bow being all fiberglass so bow now has almost 2--3 degree reflex deflex bow design that you have to really look at to tell espically since this bow the limbs are set in middle of the hand grip, not at front or back like most ASL/flat limb longbows are made. This bow is fun to shoot being it is a more point to shoot bow then my other OEELINE Airobow 56 inch Recurve I draw to almost the same weight of 35--37 pounds despite it being a 45 pound bow at 28 inches due to my short draw length that is more a bow I need to work more on aim then to work on getting the draw right though both are important with the recurve, just aiming seems to be the bigger thing with the recurve as hands kind of just fit into the Bear Grizzly like grip going as close as I can to a full flat handle grip on this bow. True most ASL/flat limb longbows are made to be 66--72 inches but some can be 63--65 inches long too, one Bear makes called the Montana a 64 inch based off the old ASL/flat limb longbow called the Yukon that Bear made at one point or another two by Grayvn archery, Bushman and the Snake bow are 64 inch bows too. Some ASL/flat limb longbows are 60--62 inch bows mainly for either short draw like me (24--24.5 inches) or for young teens but they go smaller too for younger kids.

What a great video and on my favourite bow type. Thanks guys for recording this. Across the pond we call these American Flatbows and I fell in love shooting these styles of bows pretty much from the first time I picked one up 10 to 15 years ago. I shoot recurves for coaching sessions, but the bows I go to for fun, for me are flatbows. I can hit a target with my recurve and I go yeah great. I hit with a flatbow and I feel it. I have to focus and work but it feels so good when I make a shot with it. I shot wooden arrows with feather fletchings all year round. 4.5 inch fletch with a 460 grain total arrow weight from my competition 45lb Black Brooke Sigma Neo C. (C is for carbon) Arrows come off 171 FPS I've shared this from my Facebook page for my followers 🙂

@HondoTrailside
@HondoTrailside Жыл бұрын
That won't happen, unless one wanted a very short draw length. ASLs basically use length to deal with the draw length to bow length design issue. They are designed to come to a hard stop. They shouldn't stack, but they are firmer at full draw that most other bows. It is one of their super powers. It is the basis of their forgiveness. Ron LaClair, who designed the Shrew bows, was a devoted ASL shooter. I have one of his ASLs, and it is just as long as anyone else's. The D/R bows he designed short, are basically recurves, but with a flex point near the handle. Basically the opposite mechanism, to an ASL. You can get a guy to buy a new bow by offering him a 28 incher, while he currently shoots a 32" bow. It becomes a must have. Meanwhile someone is harvesting just as much game with a 72" bow. Up here in Canada where gun rules are different, you have guys obsessed with 8" barrels on their 308s. Hey great idea! Meanwhile the pro in the African bush has a bolt action with a 25" barrel. Choose the toys one wants, but the shortness thing is well past rational.
@theabhorrentchef7226

Im all about short bows. I was hoping the “semi longbow” part of ASL meant it was gone be fairly short lol. Im strictly a stalker though so there’s just no way to have fun creeping around with something 64+” I’ve got a 56” recurve that is sweet as hell but I could use something even shorter especially for early season when the woods are thick. I’ve got a Bear super mag 48” on the way. We’ll see if I can properly accurate with that thing within two months and it’ll be my Hunter this year

Funny how Hill invented the ASL, which is just an English style longbow that is adapted to modern materials, and simplified and modernized in form. So no horn nocks, and some centercut, as examples. Yet, while Hill didn't suck as a shooter, not one of these guys shoots his bow like he did (though Ben used to shoot that style). So explanations of "forgiveness" and the swing draw are flat. Hill seems to have mostly walked up game. Today, most people are ambush hunters, and that mates more with a target static approach to shooting.

Due to my size I have to use that anchor at cartilage before the ear hole to get a 24--24.5 inch draw depending on handle design. For this reason, I had to get for hunting GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY The Youth Longbow (mild reflex deflex that looks like a D shape when strung) at 45 pounds and I chose Hickory for the limbs. I do like with most of the GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY flat limb longbows they are notched grip with flat front so I can grip the bow like a flat handle longbow or English longbow with that full grip. I like to use 45 Pounds as I know I can use the bow over and over for a bit but not forever the way lighter bows can be yet still hit just at lager game requirements in South Dakota the Elk and Mountain Lion as they need 45 pounds should I ever want to do that, not that I would. I live in South Dakota so we have minimum for deer/turkey being 30 pounds and I feel that 35 pounds is best to get the big game animal mainly Turkey than 38 pounds on up is best for deer. Oh, I am using aluminum arrows not super good arrows but good arrows from Cupid the 400 spine for my GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY Hickory limb Youth Longbow at 45 pounds.

I have since got the bow December 22. 2022 and it is more like ASS or American Style Shortbow with minor to mild Reflex Deflex that looks 95% to a standard D shape when strung. I love the handle the bow has and is a rather smooth draw for how short the bow is at 52 inches. The bow is like ASL that is a cross of a shelfed English longbow and a Native bow but the bow is a cross of a Shelfed English Short Bow and a Short Plains style Native bow that kind of has a little bit of B shape to the riser/handle area. I got this bow due to it being what I needed for a bow needing left hand and short draw, a combo that with most mass produced brands caps the left hand bows at 55 pounds when I would need 60 for most to get a 45 pound bow at my draw of 24--24.5 inches. I got lucky and got my bow at a time when the company was still not well known as now it is 6--12 months for the bow. Reason I got such a short time of 6--10 weeks was that GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY did not have many KZbin videos or other social media stuff at the time with really only a video about the company no longer being the original Texas brand but promises to keep making the old models in same designs with a little bit of newer tech to improve the bows and an almost blank Facebook page.
