So many mixed black people are more palatable and "safe" to white people because of our proximity to whiteness. Justice Smith comes across as very safe to white people. Interesting how they released the trailer in December and the movie is not being released until March 22. Looks like the marketing team is trying to test the waters in the the black community to see what kind of reaction its going to get. Bet the interns are all over these comments! With the kind of backlash it's getting, wouldn't be surprised if they push the release to fall or just drop it on HBOMAX. Could've been a real cool take on race stuff, but it needed someone like Spike Lee to nail it. Right now, it's just... kind of cringe and corny as hell. Justice Smith has no personality and he looks like he is phoning in his performance. And maybe going with a darker-skinned lead would've made their point hit harder, kind of like what 'Get Out' did. They really missed a chance here.
@blessed37798 ай бұрын
The fact that they chose a bi-racial or racially ambiguous person is on theme with the movie-how black people have to make yt people feel comfortable in order to navigate in life….. point being yt people are “more comfortable” around lighter skin BP. Something about the dark melanation in dark skin BP that puts WP on edge or triggers their yt rage frfr. When WP see darker complexion BP they either become intrigued like BP are wild animals and want to touch hair and make awkward compliments about the persons dark-skin; or WP immediately become agitated and enraged believing that the darkskin BP does not belong in their space amongst WP; or they just get extremely passive aggressive and show disrespectful signs of micro aggressions to attempt to make the dark skin BP feel uncomfortable enough to leave or remove themselves from around black spaces.

I only heard about this movie earlier today, thanks to KZbin commercials. While I wasn't watching it from the beginning, I did see most of it and that title. I later on looked for the trailer and of course ran into the many many negative reviews of a movie no one has yet seen. Trailers if any good are designed to make you think about them, but they don't always give you the straight story. This movie seems to me to be planting " this is how it's going to go", as far as what was shown. But I think the story might turn at some point along the way. It could turn out to be crap, but you don't know that for sure until you've seen it. Lastly, out of all the reviews I've seen for this movie so far, your's is the only one with an open mind. The only thing exciting about this trailer to me is David Grier and whatever comedy is available, David is hugely underrated actor and comedian who was everywhere in the 90s just like Tommy Davidson. They both are hilarious and have been underappreciated. I do wished they could've casted an underground actor or another known actor who has a darker complexion. They could've casted 1.Tyler James Williams, 2.Keith Powers, 3. Shameik Moore, 4. Caleb McLaughlin, 5.Trevor Jackson so many others. Just like Zendaya, Amandla Steinberg, Yara Shahidi, and Storm Reid always gets booked for every "black girl role" in a hollywood movie, and no shade to those ladies because they are talented and beautiful ,but we need to see more Dominique Fishbacks, Coco Jones, Lovie Simone Oppong, Quinta Brunsons etc. The plot is funny, yet risky and deep. We have to go above and beyond to cater to the egos and fragility of white people and appease their needs for everyone to be at least remotely comfortable. Sounds exhausting, but also sounds like black, magical fairy-godparents lol. And the love interest just had to be a plain white girl huh? Not saying you can't fall in love with someone or be attracted to someone outside of your own race or ethnicity, but still. And the white guy immediately thinks oh, you're trying to set me up with her, because you can't or shouldn't be into her, thanks bro.
