The American Toby Jug Museum - Evanston, IL

Truly one of the most unique collections I have ever laid my eyes on. The American Toby Jug Museum is the world's largest collection of Toby Jugs - bizarre character jugs with a history that spans hundreds of years, but its primary origin began in the mid-1700's.
Steve Mullins started this Toby Jug collection in 1947 and today the museum houses a collection of over 8,000 Toby Jugs - that includes the largest, smallest, and oldest Toby Jugs on Earth. And the best part - the admission is Free!
Sketchbook Brewery down the street also collaborated with the museum to brew Stingo - the distinct Ale from the 18th century that a Toby Jug is famous for pouring!

What an incredible collection! I especially love the original characters they created. What I've learned from my own quest to complete my Tony Wood Little Old Lady tea set is that these pieces are hard to find outside of the United Kingdom. I don't dare imagine what values we're looking at - in shipping alone. It looks like even the old jugs are in amazing condition (or received skilled restoration). Wow. I hope I can make it across the pond to see the museum one day - if not, I'm forever grateful for this tour!

I have a Toby mug from occupied Japan with the face of an old man. I thought it was the ugliest mug until now. After seeing this video it went from the garage to a glass encased cabinet.

I spent quite a few memorable fun weekends partying in a neighborhood bar tavern here in Denver Colorado The place was called Toby Jug . Never knew what why who Toby Jug the name meant . Now I do thanks… & ironically my entire family is from Evanston Illinois … What a bizarre place and an extensive collection.. of “head mugs”.
