The author pretends the Japanese were faultless during the war. Their brutality against POWs and the people in the conquered lands was uncalled for. No punishment was too severe for them after the war.

The ending in defeat is never glamorous. Defeat after defeat, the Japanese chickens headed home to roost in agony of unconditional surrender. Gone were the days of unrelenting victories and supremacy over the Pacific. Gone were the days of arrogant subjugation of defeated neighboring nations. Gone were the glory days of centuries of pride in the days of the rising sun. The sun had set and reality had arisen over the Imperial Palace.

My grandfather served on the from Indianapolis. He joined her crew in 40. He got off after the Kamikaze attack at Okinawa when she refit and repaired at Mare.

Having watched the entire series I must say it has given me a different perspective to hear the Japanese side of the naval war. I was taken aback by the large number of their submarines that were sunk and surprised by the capabilities of the U.S. ships in locating and sinking them. This is a great series and I thank the poster very much.

12:41 - This was after the second nuke leveled Nagasaki! Invaders? 18:53 - Had not heard that, but one of the books has Trueman warning Russia not to invade Hokkaido. It's doubtful they could. 21:05 - They were and remained deluded; these fools were to waste yet more blood for no reason. Pretty much alone among those viewing the war as a whole, O'Brien ("How the War Was Won") sees war (as do I) an economic competition. Rommel came to the view late ('The battle is won by the quartermasters before the first shot is fired' - after being run out of the African littoral), others earlier but none so specifically as O'Brien. Japan (and Germany, for that matter) both started wars which pitted them against economies far greater than their own, and both assumed 'spirit" (or some other mythical quality) was to overcome lead, steel and gunpowder. And atoms. They were both wrong and imbecilic in starting the wars. Germany's war was lost 9/1/39, Japan's 12/7/41 (US time), and is should have been obvious in early '43. 29:27 - The Indianapolis was also engaged in a highly classified mission, to the detriment of many of the crew. 32:42 - The Japanese gov't (as all do) had emptied the civilian larders to feed the military; again, engaging in a war Japan could not afford. In one of MacArthur's finest moments, he demanded of the US Congress delivery of large amounts of rice: 'I've had Japanese officers executed for starving US POWs; I do not intend to do the same to the Japanese.' 42:41 - And, for better reason, to hate Japan.

I’ve always held General Douglas MacArthur in very low regard; for just about everything he did, said, or was unable to do. This is the one exception. He performed brilliantly in taking on the role of a military governor and the civil affairs coordinator of a defeated nation. He was able to read the Japanese population at that time as practically nobody else could, and oversee its recovery in a manner that benefitted the interests of both the United States and Japan. Just keep him the hell away from ever commanding large bodies of combat troops and making strategic military decisions and things will be just fine.

What the heck is a “sea doctor?” The robot narrator keeps saying this in reference to some sort of commanding officer position. Probably a strange mispronunciation….

@@user-eu2ud9hm1p …Ahhhh, okay, yeah that was it. Pronouncing the letter “c” then interpreting the last two letters “dr” as the official abbreviation for an actual doctor. Brilliant. I couldn’t figure that one out for the life of me, thank you
