I was so spoilt as a kid. My dad ran music stores in the UK, and was a salesman on the road for Burns guitars at one point. We moved to Canada in '64, and he eventually went on his own with a teaching studio in our house. As a result, between the early 60's and early 80's, I had access to a smorgasbord of new and vintage gear. Mostly borrowed my dad's silverface Pro Reverb, until I finally bought a used Princeton Reverb for $225 in the mid '70's.

What a wonderful conversation, thanks. Who doesn’t like to talk about amps? Funny you mentioned about having to decide what to take in case of a fire, just had that happened to us last Sunday. I’ve been playing guitar since the early 70’s and later started building amps soon after that so I have quite a selection to pick from but when you’re phones going off say it’s time to evacuate I thought the only gear I felt couldn’t be replaced was my first amp build, 1976 Band Master made into a 1964 Fender Vibroverb and my 1969 Yamaha F-150 acoustic, the guitar that started my journey. Thank goodness everything worked out for us and our neighbors. Keith, I too have always liked the stereo setup, Helix and Powercab on the left and some kind of old Fender on the right.

great video - my first amp was a Crate 2x10... hated that thing. Then I bought a Fender Blues Deluxe - 95 reissue American. Then I bought a Kustom combo. But then I stumbled upon a Genz Benz BP 30 - I still have it. It weighs a ton but is the absolute best sounding amp. I absolutely love it. I also have a Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special Head, Marshall DSL 100, Marshall 20 Watt, Blackstar 50 HT and I found another Fender Blues Deluxe. None are as good as the Genz Benz though.

My Peavey phase was a 130 Special, my only amp through most of the 1980’s; played many gigs with that. My #1 since 2003 is a Swart AST 20w, 1x12 combo Bought an Amplified Nation Ampliphonix & Gain 50w head a few months ago. It’s a beast to haul around, but man, does it sound brilliant. Hey Keith! I was on an amp kick myself here a year ago or so... I have four amps and I can honestly say I'm totally good here lol. I own a Two Rock Burnside, Freidman Dirty Shirley head going into an Ox and on over to a Tone Tubby 2x12 cabinet, Revv G20 which I use the most I practice on going into my studio speakers and PC, lastly a Spark 40 which I don't use anymore and it's collecting dust in my den here. I actually purchased the G20 Revv from watching your channel too, it's a great little head that's super versatile with all the Two Tone selections you can purchase if you so desire. I had a 2x12 Fender Hot Rod Deville which I wound up selling although that amp sounded magnificent as well, it was heavy in weight although that's expected for a tube driven 2x12 I suppose. Thanks Keith, love your channel man! PS - If I ever make another purchase it would probably be a Dr. Z although I don't see that happening anytime soon ahah!

A lot of talk around home volumes. You don't need a 1 watt or 5 watt amp, you need a master volume amp or if not, an attenuator. A Princeton Reverb with a Weber Mini-Mass attenuator is a great home combo. A Mesa Fillmore 25 or a Marshall DSL40CR (yes, a 40 watt amp can sound great at bedroom) both are master volume and can be amazing both loud and at bedroom volume. My first amp? Of course a Peavey Bandit!

I built my 5E3 off a Mojotone kit, but the voltages were too high (close to DR values- well over 400V). It didn't sound right after I adjusted the resistor values for proper bias voltage, so I subbed in a Mission Amps power transformer. It's considerably bigger, let me run the stock resistor values, and made a major improvement to the overall tone and behaviour at the point of breakup. I also used a Hoffman turret board. He relocates the location of the filter caps for a huge reduction in noise without changing any component values. Other than a little hiss, it's virtually silent with both volumes cranked. I used a Weber 12A125A-O (Alnico P12Q replica w/a 20W voice coil) for the finishing touch.

Great info, thanks for sharing. Sounds l I keep a quality build after your forementioned mods. I've been rocking the factory ceramic speaker and recently swapped it for an alnico speaker. I think I'll ab my combo speakers alnico vs ceramic because I put too much emphasis in the circuit when the speaker was never considered. The right speaker can really shift the emphasis of the amp.

Another great video. Shame I wasn't around for the livestream. I still have one of those Peavey Bandit 65 amps and I do not think of it as lightweight. I'm pretty sure I did when I bought it but having lugged it 8 miles from storage on buses to my house the other month, no. IMO 44lb for a solid state amp is not lightweight! My first amp was a 10 watt but I don't know the make. It ran off two of those big boxy 9 volt batteries and buzzed horribly until I stuck an aluminium bracket (I think it was for holding back a shower curtain) on the bottom and earthed the chassis through it. It was loud enough for busking outdoors. I sold it for more than it was worth when I made the mistake of giving up busking because I got a proper day job. I then got the Peavey Bandit 65 - I was still driving back then - and I remember thinking the reverb was great but now I think it is pretty poor. I had the chance to buy a Fender Super Six Reverb second hand but it weighed about twice as much as the Peavey and was more expensive. As I was on a budget I went with the Peavey but the Fender sounded great to me. The Fender was also huge - over three feet high - because it had six 10 inch speakers in it. I have a 5 watt Roland Street Cube (the original one before they became 50 watt as Roland or 10 watt as Boss) which was just for home use but the other day I played it outdoors and then in a bar. It was more successful outdoors because the bar is an art deco streamline moderne place and nearly all windows in steel frames, so I was getting too much feedback on vocals and too much reverb even with the reverb on the amp switched off! These days I usually play through a small mixing desk and active speakers as this is a lightweight solution which produces good clean tones and is ideal for someone who goes everywhere by public transport. BTW, there's amps available now with stereo input so you can have different effects in each channel but as the sound all comes from one place I'm not sure what the benefit is unless you can have, say, different amounts of reverb on the high and low strings. I've had people asking me what amp to use. I ask what they want first. If it's a home practice amp I point them to the Boss 10 watt Street Cube which has a 5 watt setting. If it's bass I point them to the Fender Rumble, if they start mentioning tubes I tell them they are better off speaking to someone with more knowledge than me. For anything else I tell them to check out Roland Jazz Chorus, Catalyst, or Boss Katana. If someone wants a rig for busking I remind them to make sure the amp has more than one channel. In the UK right now I can get the PRS HDRX 20 Head for £677 and PRS HDRX Cabinet 1x12 for £296 or PRS DGT 15 Cabinet Dave Grissom Signature 1x12 for £349 so about £26 either side of a grand. I am sure you can get that for under $1,200 in the US.

I started out playing classical guitar but really wanted to be a flamenco player so had no use for amps. I inherited an 80’s Mexican Strat and a Peavy Bandit from my 20 something son who left for Europe which tweaked my interest. The Peavy found a new home awhile ago but the Strat is still here along with a bunch of other guitars mostly acoustic and electric archtops. My two current amps are a silver faced ‘72 Fender Pro Reverb and a repurposed Bell and Howell movie projector amplifier called a Filmosound. It’s a locally converted 6V6 unit similar to those used by Ry Cooder, Blake Mills, Tragically Hip etc. I also have a Black faced Princeton on loan that I’m searching for the optimum edge of breakup level. Lovely amp.

First amp, 50w Peavey w/tube preamp solid state power amp. Aint it true what you said about Peaveys in the 70s!. The second I got to play in sterio was a Vox Cambridge Reverb 30w all tube from the early 70s. I sold both when I came to Japan, The vox turned up to 7 or 8 was amazing. Years later I really kicked myself for having sold that vox! when I got back into playing, I picked up a solid state cambridge 30 (new gen vox) which didn't have the same power, then a Fender sterio chorus 60w X 2 (their version of a JC120) which I played for 18 years before it suddenly died. Now I have a '87 Fender red knob "The Twin", their first run of printed circuit amps. and a Quelter MicroPro Mach2 300w head through a self built cab w/2 10". Also a Yamaha VR6000 sterio next to my desk for when inspiration strikes while working. Now I am happy.

My amp journey was also a little unusual but I,ve certainly owned fewer amps than you have ;) My first amp was also a Peavy 112 I got used. I forgot the actual model name. It had those metal "wings" on either site of the front baffle like most Peavey 112 of the time. It also had round, flatish metal knobs with a ridge with small indents (best way I can describe them). It was very loud and I hated it. It was just not the sound I was after then. My next amp was a used Roland JC-120. With a CS-1 Boss compressor and a Strat in position 2 it was the sound of the age. I loved it... until I didn't. I tried a variety of dirt pedals through it starting with a Boss DS-1 then an HM-1 and finally, got a rack with a multieffect unit and comp and distortion came from a Rockman Sustainor. Soon after I craved a different distortion tone and I got a Marshall ValveState 8080 212 I used in a 2 amps rig with the JC-120. A complex system (for the time) of 3 Rockman AB/Y boxes controlled in MIDI with a Rockman Octopus routed the signal to either amp and the multieffect rack unit was placed either in front of the JC-120 or in the loop of the ValVestate. My rig remained like that that for a while but it was the mid 90s now and the clean JC-120 tone just didn't cut it for me anymore. I craved the "chime" of a Fender amp. A big reason for that was the tone of Ken Greer who played with Canadian band Red Rider (Tom Cochrane). He also played on Larry Gowan's Lost Brotherhood album with absolutely killer tones (saw that tour twice). I went shopping to Steve's Music Store in Montreal one day and I found a used 1989 red knobs Fender Twin among a ton of other amps. After the amp tech there re tubed it and tightened a few other things inside, it became my main amp for the next 25 years... The clean channel on that amp was absolutely killer. That was 1996 and soon after I sold both the JC-120 and the ValveState. The Peavey was of course long gone. That trusty red knobs Twin died in 2020 after being dropped accidentally after our last gig before lock down. By that time I had acquired a Marshall 1960A 412 cab and I plugged the Twin in it in addition to its own speakers. On 2 it rattled the windows in the house ;) Since I already had the 412 cab, I decided to try a Katana MarkII head and that because my main amp until sometime in 2022. Loved the versatility of that amp and the brown channel is great but it really didn't have the glorious clean tone of the red knobs Twin. Watching KZbin videos I ended up on some Revv amps demos and really loved the tone of those amps. I eventually came across a video demoing the Revv Dynamis 7-40 (the father of the D20, D25 and D40 without the Two Notes stuff). It brought back that chimey Fendery attack I was longing for on its clean channel and its second "Red" channel sounds amazing as well. Marshally mid bite but chewy and fat and more gain than the D40. I also now play a Helix floor but my main amp remains the Revv Dynamis and I keep the Katana as a backup. I play the Helix more and more now so I don't foresee buying another amp any time soon... but we never know! :)

My first amp was a Silvertone 1481 that my Papa had sitting around. I'd been using an old Yamaha PA system as an amp, and, as you can imagine, it sounded terrible. I still have that old 1481. It's my main studio amp.

HH Electronic Micro-30 Amp, natural wood combo - not the greatest - bought in a second hand shop in Leeds UK in 1983. Putting a new plug on it when I got home my mate. (we were both very young teenagers) electrocuted himself and flew across the room after a big bang and smoking! Gladly he survived burt it took him a moment to come around. Good times! 🤣

My first amp took some research to figure out. It was so long ago and obscure I had to post a question to Reddit. It was a Mini-Rock. It was battery powered like a pignose but had a 6*9 speaker like a car stereo. Ran on 8 D batteries or a wal-wart 12 v adaptor. Followed by some kind of Heath Kit TA-16 2*10. The first real amp I had was a Music Man HD-210 130.

The peavey classic 30 and especially the 115 delta blues were pretty special amps. I’ve still got the DB it’s my first tube amp and still a worthy hoss.

Marshall reverb 12 in 1985. Sounded great clean to crunch considering they cost next to nothing. Only sold it when I moved to Canada. Voltage and all that….

I was super lucky with my first amp, it was a black panel Fender Deluxe Reverb from 1965, that is my dad’s. I still have it and have been playing it since 1978. Great amp, but I’ve accumulated a lot more amps, especially loving old Gibson amplifiers

My very first amp was a transistor Carlsbro 2x10 (vertical) combo that, for relatively quiet bedroom playing, was OK, but had no tone and really couldn't rock. I traded it in '78 for my second amp, a '73 SF Twin, which I still have.

My first was an old cratr solid state. Thgen came the HRD and Crate Vintage Club. I bacled away from tube amp because o mainteance issues (hard time finding tubes I liked). Now i have a Blues Cube "Boss Edition" and a Catalyst 100. updated to the newest firmware. I"m interested in the Tone Master Bassman, and setting up a tweed with harmonic tremolo, my holy grail

I built my first amp (early 70's) from defunct TV parts. Had a nice big power transformer, but the audio out was woefully undersized. I got the circuit design out of a 1940's-ish popular science (I think). Was intended to be a phono amp, but worked fine for guitar. Since then, I have owned and built many amps.

My first amp was a Gibson Falcon non reverb. Volume and a tone knob. Later I had another Gibson with reverb, two 10" speakers (don't know the model, wish I could find another one). Traded that Gibson for Heath Kit TA17 with twin TA17A cabs. It was loud! I now run a Fender Acoustasonic 30 for my Acoustic guitars and a Vox AC-15c1 with several pedals for electric.

My first amp was a 5 watt amp from Woolworths. The result was a bit of a false start on the guitar playing journey. About a year later Marshall brought out their first Solid State amp. The thing was I sold my guitar to buy it!😊

My first amp wasn't really a "guitar" amp but a 1970 Kenwood 6420 receiver with way too many features and also severely modified for use as a primary club amp in a Disco it had a total of just over 2875 watts through 5 pairs of pre and power amps. while the selector had FM, FM stereo, FM auto, AM, Phono 1 and 2, Tape 1 and 2, Aux 1 and 2, then 2 more not marked that I found to be Mic. and guitar inputs .. with a pair of Sansui speakers that had adjustments for highs and mids of soft, normal and clear. if they were on clear you couldn't sty in the rom with them past 3 of 20 on the volume dial. I plugged a Sears Silvertone/Danelectro guitar with it's Lipstick pick ups i it into the guitar jack stood just outside and cranked it. What glorious sounds from that powerful receiver amp. my next guitar amp is one that I got used a few years ago. the Blackstar ID Core stereo 40 works fine for my needs. sounds fine and is quite loud enough to annoy my nosy neighbors plenty. and when i plug in my Stellarcaster. with its 3 quad rail/coil HB's wired like 50's Ls Pau with coil splits and l retaining the Fender 5-way blade switch. The bridge tone pot os also a P/P to activate the bridge and neck Pick ups together regardless of other controls..... yup I did go a bit overboard with this first build but then that was the point to begin with. . Go all out with my design for the ultimate Strat build learning along the way. for th rest of my collection builds I plan for the future. This one is named the "Stellarcaster" owing to its Starcaster-Strat electric guitar By: Fender (said it on the head stock) beginnings and the extreme I took it to in design and execution. the hand made custom extended brushed stainless steel pick guard loaded with the 3 quad rail HB's the 6 control pots and the 5-way switch. the bridge got a full size solid brass trem block and roller saddles. The head stock is graced with a titanium nut , roller string tree and locking tuners, like I said extreme mods and upgrades. but then the paint is very special as well . a stars and planets space theme paint job on both body and head stock done with spray cans and airbrushed details. finished with semi gloss 2K acrylic clear coat. of course it has strap locks to keep it safely in place . strung with 9-46 strings and tuned to E-flat standard like any good Strat should be.. It came out better than I expected it to and works as designed. soldering all of those connections for the controls was quite the adventure but I didn't use the traditional 22 gauge wire. I stripped a computer VGA cable for the smaller stranded wires in it since the real output from most pick ups is mere millivolts and doesn't really require anything bigger than the small wires I used in my build. and it works just fin. and saves space in the control cavity. if a bit fiddly to get where you want it and solder it in place. . Plus the little tricks I added to the circuit. but it works as designed and sounds great. This guitar is good looking, feels good in the hands and it plays as well as sounds out of this world. Wanna Play???

A Dual Recto, Super Reverb Reissue, Fender Bandmaster with 2x15 cab, Yes Heartbreaker and finally FYD Lurch which I almost sold recently do to medical bills. I'm so glad I didn't because it is the best home amp I've ever had.

First amp was a 10w Marshall Valvestate 1x8 combo. 8010 I think. Sounded surprisingly decent. Ironically gone full circle and used nothing but 10w amps for the last few years, although the Blackstar Studio 10 is a somewhat different beast from a 10w solid-state practice amp!

No name practice amp with a speaker from a 70’s Volkswagen Beatle, Peavey Studio Pro 112 (silver stripe), Crate Gx-10, Roland VG88&GR33 through Fender Passport 250 (pa), Electar Century 30 DR, Carvin Nomad 112, Crate Taxi 30 DB, old 35watt tube pa amplifier head with Boss RV-5, VHT Special 12/20 RT, Quilter Superblock US. I first, 'good' amp was an early 90s, Fender Twin (the 1 input 'Twin Amp')...and I still have it. I bought it 2nd hand in probably 97 or 98 and it still looked new. Now, it is extremely beat up on the outside..but I think that I have done a pretty good job maintaining it..and it still works perfectly. Although, I've had to have the reverb unit repaired a couple of times..but that is it. I was and still is way too loud.

My first↨ amp was a small Guyatone tube (gone and I don't recall the model). The second one (I still have) is a Stage 25 1x8 SS two channel with reverb and tremolo.. i had the second input changed to s headphone out. I currently have two portable (battery power able) stereo (one for acoustic and microphone), a 7", two 8", two 10", and two 12"(one is tube). All that and all guitars and a 300 Watt PA and a stereo system (including turntable) sit in the same small bedroom. Space is my biggest problem.
