Don't remember the name of the video, but this guy had a similar hum noise issue in his signal. He found out that a contractor box down his street was causing the issue. He used a battery powered amp with a guitar and used the pickups as an antenna to find where the hum was being generated. A quick call to the company solved everything. If you have really dirty power you could always use something like a portable power station, the ones designed for RVs/Camping ? If you running a small studio with a laptop and 50w amp, a 2000w power station would likely give you around 15+ hours in a single charge.

To the guy asking about bodies/AC, etc. YES. The amount of people directly affects sound. That's why it's a good idea to have a buddy or sound guy monitoring it over the evening from the crowd. Even with no help, it's a good idea to go out front of the stage area when starting a new set if more people have come in. Noodle a bit...make sure everything is still clear and being heard. It usually only takes minor adjustments. Rock on.

Well, I own a Boss Katana Mk II myself and on one side I love it and on one side I just hate it. First of all you've got all of these nice effects. But some of these sound like 💩. If you're trying to get a nice Metal tone, the Boss katana is great for you but it still has two little details I don't like about it: You just have three IRs (Sound is in the speaker, so why no option to load in multiple IRs yourself?) and i order to have a footswitch, you need to buy one seperatly, while the Quad Cortex has none of those problems. The only annoying thing about the QC is the little sound-gap you get between switching presets, which the Boss Katana doesn't have. Anyways thanks for the effort you put into your videos! For the guy with the ground issue. This is a solution that may be less costly. Thought of getting one of those rechargeable Anker power stations ? U get to power your whole system through and skip your apartments power all together. Atleast power the machine and any out board gear and the rest of monitors can be through your home power outlet. Was hoping you could dispel/confirm something for me. "Fender amps can't do metal" I have a Hot Rod DeVille and every time I tell people that, it's instantly you can't use that for metal. With a decent distortion pedal I can get absolutely ripping tone, but nobody will even give me a chance. Could you maybe rent a Hot Rod Deluxe/DeVille and see what you can get out of it? They're not crazy expensive and might be a good tube amp option for some folks who can find a good deal on one used. Fuck you very much Glenn!!

You absolutly can. Some Desert Rock/Sludge/Doom bands use Fender amps with fuzz boxes and whatnot. I really like the Hot Rods

Those people don’t know shit. You absolutely can, the right pedal tightens those up just peachy. The amp itself might be difficult to do metal alone, but a pedal will easily push that one into the zone.

I recommend you two watch Jim Lill's video about amp tone (and all his other videos, to be fair). The main takeaway is that there's no secret sauce to amps, and it's possible to make very different amps produce the exact same sound if you know how to control the variables like frequency response from different EQ circuits.

They do matter to a certain extent but not the most important thing in the signal chain the difference between decent pickups and great ones are pretty much minuscule

Listening is a lost art these days. Please tell us all where Glen said pickups don’t matter. He did several tests which showed that different humbuckers don’t have much of a tonal difference ( which for high gain becomes even less). The difference is mainly in the output. And yes, there may be a difference in build quality and materials. But to get a different guitar tone, you’d better change the cabinet/speakers than getting expensive pickups

This is an issue I as a metal player for decades have dealt with. As Glen notes often, I've found a difference with speakers in the past... but I play like the people I like the most (Mustaine, Hetfield, Hammett, Dimebag, Page). It's hard to find a sound... even Hetfield has expressed this issue in interviews. Original anything is incredibly difficult, and obviously you don't watch or listen when he goes over people's original mixed music. He gives feedback to the music we send him...🤷‍♂️

If you record next to a PC you can pick up electromagnetic noise into pickups when facing to PC. When I upgraded GPU suddenly I got noise. Dunno, if that's only Nvidia but tested with GTX series 1060, 2070, 3080.

It's not recommended to run like it indefinitely, but if just for a recording session or gig putting a non-grounded power extension in between usually takes any ground related noise away. Sometimes grounding can also cause high pitched sounds, pops and noise running a laptop with a grounded plug. Not saying it's a fix, but a non-grounded power extension is something I always carry in my gearbag for obvious reasons. I have tried ferrite beads but haven't had success eliminating ground related noise where present.

You're right the main difference between "cheap chinese" and brand-name pickups are if the cheap chinese are not waxed, they're feedback machines, which can be an asset or a liability, if you're struggling with a bunch of Zakk Wylde harmonics, try an unwaxed pickup, they're great for pinch harmonics.

Air density is definitely different with higher humidity and temperature, its also affecting the malleable texture of the speaker cone and the diaphragm of the mic. I have an environmental Science background and a guitarist of 35 years, a LOT happens to a speaker, mic, and other gear like drums with humidity and heat. COntraction and expansion would definitely change sound as well as liquids floating in between the sound source and mic or ear

Trust me dude, temperature and humidity always have something to do with your sound. No matter what. I live up in Minnesota, where you can really tell the difference between winter and summer humidity. We have to really protect our guitars to keep them from warping and stuff in the winter time. The wood shrinks that much. In the winter time, since I live in a freaking apartment that doesn't have a humidifier, I have to use Humidipacks, and basically leave my acoustic in the case all winter. Except for when I pull it out to play it. Now, being a physics guy, I know it also affects even the paper/density of your speakers. Some days, things just don't sound right, and you can't quite figure out why? Sometimes, it's just the fncking weather. 🤪🤪🤪

Depending on how much gain you're using, you MIGHT be able to tell the difference between actives and passives, but even then, probably only in isolated recordings; in a mix that difference will ghost you faster than that chick you knew from high school and accidentally creeped out at the bar in your early 20's.

Yes it has a lot of quarter note drum patterns, but taking away the ego out of the equation, it's a bloody masterpiece. Every note and hit is bloody perfect and stands the test of time. So does Puppets, but in a different way. That band is very fortunate to have made two masterpieces.

Anyone who has ever played a hall knows an empty room and full room are two completely different places. Whether or not that affects your live sound kind of rests upon the sound engineer, in my opinion. Really, your sound check should only get you at a level mix, and make sure all your gear, monitors, etc. are working. Once you hit a stage, the sound person should be able to compensate once you’re done with your first song. These days, with in ear monitors, direct source gear versus amps and cabs, and even digital drums, the venue shouldn’t matter much any longer. I’ve seen heavy metal legends who use Kemper amps, digital drums, in ear monitors, and their whole sound is crafted off stage. Us local slobs, however, usually have sound issues because of two different guitarists with varying levels of G.A.S., a bass player who swears upon his beat to shit 6x10 and v-4, and a drummer who is using the same heads he bought last year. All of this will affect your sound far more than the venue you booked….

When you have hum, you need to make sure the electric installation has a grounding system implemented, we here call it javelin. I had that issue in my parents house, we couldn't install a javelin, so I ordered a EB Tech Hum Eliminator from Amazon in 2012 and it helped a lot, also changing my tubes from the stock chinese Peavey Red tubes to Sovteks helped. Hum is so annoying...

*I've designed some circuits that will completely eliminate noise including most or all of the 60 cycle picked up by single coils.* They will be cheap and truly a one-size-fits-all solution but especially so for guitarists. I absolutely despise noise gates but have shred and sweep levels of gain and almost no noice and in that, almost never use a noise gate. *When I do, it's different in that I set the sensitivity to get rid of string noise, resonant noise, finger noise etc. since there's no noise for it to gate out based on signal voltage.* Before you go there, I am literally a college educated electrical/electronics engineer and believe it or not, we're in fact very rare in dedicated guitar electronics.

2:45 Since my band was only a 3 piece, I used to run ALL of the power through a "line conditioner" of some sort, a grey box that had 4 x 120outlets, every time we set up on stage. All it takes is one bad ground... your dad was right.

I had a similar noise problem with my monitors. I tried them in my neighbour's house next door and they were silent. I then moved them back to the studio and then ran a long power supply cable in through the window from my neighbour's just to trouble shoot, and the fizz came back. It turns out my studio had a direct line of sight to a cluster of mobile phone antennas on a nearby block. I moved the studio to another room, problem solved...

Quick question… What part of the sound equation does the acoustic volume of an electric guitar play in your opinion? I’ve put a lot of work into an RGA (Brass nut and string through surrounded saddle/ Gotoh’ish bridge relevant) and the volume of the strings is remarkably louder than my Epiphone V (Brent Hinds signature). Any opinions or relevant experiences?

I’ve been rocking a Jet City 333 40 watt head since shortly after launch and it’s a beast. Definitely benefits from an overdrive to thicken up the sound a bit (through my sh!t peavey 4x12 cab). Can’t wait to see what you think of it (as a head) and would love to get your thoughts on balancing the eq and presence for humbuckers. Hoping to hear a lil’ surfing with the alien style riff too. Anyway, excited to see some of my gear getting a shot, and thank you for what you do.

The guy with the hum problem should investigate another possibility: Are there any radio transmitters nearby? I've had this problem before and, though it is possible to get some improvement, I ended up moving to fix it totally. At another place I had an amateur radio enthusiast next door. It wasn't quite as bad as the Air Force gig in Spinal Tap but it was pretty bad. What made the biggest difference was (heresy alert!)... changing pickups. Active pickups like EMG's have low output impedance, which resists pickup of radio signals, and high output, which makes your signal louder in relation to any RF that is picked up. Finally, try a bunch of different guitar cables. Not all shielding is created equal and you won't hear the difference unless you're in a noisy EMI/RFI environment.

I don't know how anyone can still deny what a huge difference the speaker makes in your tone. I have a 4x12 that I built for recording, with 4 different speakers in it. I wired it up in such a way that you can use any speaker by itself, or any combination of any of the 4 speakers in it. Since building that thing, it's been a piece of cake to get a guitar tone that sounds good and sits nicely in any mix I do. Being able to switch speakers on the fly really demonstrates the drastic change a speaker swap makes, as opposed to having a 30 minute break to swap out speakers, and forgetting what the original tone sounded like in the process of doing so.

4:06 Hubble is a name brand. The magic phrase is "isolated ground". The ground wire isn't connected to the frame. In many commercial buildings and high-rises, the receptacle frame is connected to the conduit which is connected to the metal parts of the building. That's what you're avoiding with the isolated ground receptacle. I believe the IG receptacle is usually orange, but I'm not sure if it's an absolute "always". If the building is wood frame wired with Romex or you have plastic electrical boxes, then I don't know as a isolated ground will do anything for you. It's already isolated from everything else.

I suspect when it comes to temperature and humidity, I'm sure it does affect frequency response, but like you said, whether its' pickups, wood used on a guitar body/neck/fretboard, does it affect it to be that noticeable, especially at high gain levels? Probably negligible at best and not worth the effort change it unless you're into such voodoo as sadly many a player is, hence guitar marketing these days! But I'm sure some jackass will shoot back with " I can TOTALLY tell it was a humid day when (insert preferred guitar god) recorded X solo!" 🤦‍♂

re: dirty DI -- If all else has been addressed (instrument shielding, cable, RF interference), you might try plugging the bare minimum of gear needed to record a DI (computer, interface, monitor?) into a UPS with a decent battery backup time and disconnect it from the house AC before hitting record.

13:38 Yes! The presence of the audience does make a difference. Check out David Rat's video "Audience Heat Messes With Concert Sound" where he shows that with a scale model experiment. I don't know as that would make a difference in a recording studio, but I could see it making a difference with paper cone speakers as it could change the dynamics of the speaker.

I have noise from underground train or a (high power transformers) its high freq, nothing helps i took a battery amp and walked in the area sure enough 150 meter away noise dissepeard.. same noise 14 years 😂 i am not but a pro but still is irritating noise gates and using on my pc works but the noise is there....

regarding barometric pressure and humidity, etc. on sound: i have often wondered if that's why one day my sound is fantastic and wonderful and then without changing anything at all, it sounds not so good on another day. maybe that's all in my head, i don't know. just something that rattled around in my brain.

For the guy with the electricy and noise problem.. another option is to buy a large LFP powerpack like an Ecoflow or Bluetti and run the amp/modeller/computer etc in isolation from one of those. Also turn off all fluorescent lights, take LED lights off the mains, move them FAR away from any amplification/drive pedals etc.

If noise changes based on the orientation of your guitar, it's an appliance (fluorescent lights? Computer monitor?) interacting with your guitar. This is a common problem with single coil pickups, but less so with humbuckers (noise is the reason humbuckers were invented). A dummy coil could help if you're using single coils, but I don't know of any metal guys using single coils.😄 Also, we had a dimmer switch on our studio lights that was causing a ton of noise.

Unrelated, but from watching your videos, it's funny how many bass players who refuse to change their strings use that whole "but James Jamerson never did!!!"; apart from Jamerson not being a metal bass player, he was also a known master of his instrument, with an impeccable sense of timing and rhythm. Something these knuckle draggers do not have. Imagine them trying to play any of his basslines.

Hey glen I have a question, I get latency using my pedalboard on the computar like 1 seg of delay between the stroke and the sound.. any ideas why this happen? My oefalboard is an GX 100 from boss and Im trying to use it on Reaper. Thank you for your advices and greetings from Chile!!

Another option that might work for the guy with the noise problem with dirty power. Buy a rechargable sine wave power supply big enough to run your gear. I use a small jackery and I can run my amp for hours. A large unit would run a whole studio.

Hi Glenn, cool thing is since you are a metal shop I can agree with you about pickups not making a difference. When I engage my Boss Metal Zone through my 100 watt Marshall 2555 into a 4 X 12 cab with green backs cranked to jet engine at afterburner I can’t tell pickup differences. (Just kidding about the volume). I agree speakers and cabinet build are key to a great metal sound. A little compression helps. I perform Blues and Pop Rock so pickups matter in these circumstances. Additionally I’m a Helix/Tonex and Katana user so with my style pickups matter. I enjoy learning from you and all you advice is sound. Keep teaching up and thanks a bunch.

6:35 I changed out the pickups in my Michael Kelly from the Rosewill pickups to Gibson 70’s tributes. The Gibson pickups were higher output and less noisy but they only sounded marginally clearer over the Rosewill pickups. So it’s down to preference for the SLIGHT differences in sounds. I ran them through an MT-15 with an Eminence DV-77. They really don’t sound much different. I’m glad I listened to you and bought the pickups for $240 instead of wasting thousands on a Gibson just to get slightly quieter pickups.

15:00 There is a new girl troupe called Katseye, they have the Antares cranked up so high, all 6 girls literally sound the same. With your eyes closed you could not tell which one is singing, it would be like one of Glenn's power tube tests. On the flip of that is the Rolling Stones. I cannot listen to the Rolling Stones, shit like "Start me up" sounds like they all recorded their parts without hearing any of the other tracks, it is so out of synch with itself it drives me crazy. Hearing Geedy Lee and Neil Peart hit that hi-that catch together on the syncopated 16th note accent is what soothes my anxiety. The Rolling Stones make me wanna run away. Oh, by the way Katseye is really good with the sound off.

to the bad power guy. try a receptacle tester from your local home depot/lowes/walmart. it should only be a few dollars and it will tell you if you have a bad ground or an incorrectly wired outlet. My noise was coming from an outlet that wasn't even being used for anything, but the previous owner just didn't ground one specific outlet.

NOISE? No you're NOT fucked. You'll need to spend a bit but, buy either a Ryobi or an Ego power station and buy some batteries. I often plug my Fractal into my Ego Nexus Power Station loaded with some batteries. If you already do yard work and bought batteries buy one of the comparable power stations.

The butthurt of the week sort of threw me off this time. Yes, the unit is $1899. That is not $200 saved from $2000 and with taxes in many places will wind up above $2000 anyway. Secondly, the commenter asked a question about EQs that you did not answer (how does a “regular eq” sound harsh?) which would have been a great way to “do good” with your show, through sharing knowledge. Third, the commenter took issue with the fact that you are claiming that this piece of gear is going to level up your sound. You absolutely did say that it took your mix to another dimension, specifically in the kick drum. I personally have no issue with the concept that an expensive piece of gear could also get you good results just as a cheap one can, but the way you responded to this commenter felt very defensive, and a bit obtuse. You ignored the point he made about trying different combinations of EQ and saturation to get new tones as well. That would give positive results just as this expensive gear would, though it would likely take longer to dial and may not sound exactly the same. You did make a good point about efficiency, and I wish you would have more clearly emphasized that the efficiency was a major factor for you as a professional.

HEY GLENN!!! Can you review using some specific bass speakers in guitar cabs? People online recommend Celestion BN12-300S, Eminence Basslite S2012, Eminence Deltalite II 2512, Beyma 12G40, 12" vintage CTS, and 12" Peavey Black Widow, and there's surely more I am not aware of. These often have response graphs similar to guitar speakers, but can handle the excursion and wattage needed for bass - though a graph is not enough to know what to expect irl. I’ve seen them used in setups with a modeller + poweramp + DIY cab, or for high-gain guitar and bass in home studios, or for Doom/Shoegaze. Quilter, Zilla, and Barefaced use them in guitar cabs. I think it's a cool idea to explore as an alternative to the boring V30 and/or Greenback standard. I wonder how well - from your perspective - they perform with high-gain guitar tones (possibly with a 10-band EQ in the effects loop), as well as bass tones where you mix a miced cab track with a bass cab IR track. Could you test each speaker individually and in blends, and compare closed vs. open cabs, and 2x12 vs. 4x12 configurations? Dr. Decibel from Celestion support confirmed it’s safe to use the BN12-300S this way, and I've seen people successfully use the Eminence models, not to mention vintage CTS being common in old Fender combo amps. Celestion BN12-300S and Eminence Deltalite II 2515 are often suggested as lightweight alternatives to EVM12L (as in physically, easier to carry cause neodymium), though they're a bit darker apparently.

Universal Audio offers both monthly payments and own it forever. They have made most (if not all) plugins available as VST, not requiring their hardware. I've got their hardware, and had an issue years after warranty expired and had to have them repair it...called their tech support, got an RMA and had it back in about 3 days and cost less than $300 with shipping. Their hardware is expensive, but is very flexible and sounds great. Also, I keep all of my gear behind a voltage regulator, surge protector, and Furman filters.

Hi Glenn, I have recently purchased a second hand prs mt15 and a 2x 12 Blackstar cab. To my ears it sounds amazing when cranked up. My question is, what are the real reasons no one likes celestion seventy 80s? My cab has them fitted and they sound so mean in this setup.

Every body in a concert hall acts like a Big bag of water, absorbing and diffusing parts of the sound, Mostly dampen LF As the crowd increases in size and density there is an 'upcurrent' caused by the combined body heat, which can have an effect on the HF throw (that is, how far the High frequencies will travel), basically causing a diversion towards the sky/ceiling. There are AES (Audio Engineers Society) papers regarding each of these factors. There are also mentions of these effects in 3 chapters of the Don Davis Bible for live sound "Sound System Engineering".

As someone whose first guitar had cheap Chinese pickups, here's my personal experience: it probably depends on the company. Had two guitars made by the same company (S101), and while they were fine at bedroom levels, no noise gate on earth could silence the ungodly squealing in a full band situation. Switched pickups out, and while the squealing was gone, I really never noticed a difference in base tone.

#1 might be having a noise issue with the power co.'s overhead lines. Where I live there is a mile plus long distributed 120/240V line fed with multiple (yet all overloaded) transformers. 8AM to 8PM the noise drowns out any pickup signal and after 8PM you only have to be 200 feet from the road to have a chance. And stand 90 degrees to the power lines.

Hey Glenn, Have you ever put your top amps in front of a crappy cab (or two), to prove it's not the amp? I think it would add another element to the argument of "it's in the speaker" Not that I am on the V30 bandwagon, per se, but every amp in front of my V30's always sound really good. and on another note, someone gave me a Peavey Black Widow 1x18 15 years ago, and it sound great with guitar amps. You'd swear it was a 4x12, and a major increase in volume, with the 1x18 too.

Hey Glenn, just to give you a little info first off love your channel. Secondly, the Green Dot represents hospital grade, which is also a separated ground a triangle would be a true isolated ground. Having both would be unobtainium and found on the planet Nirvana. As far as drowned electrical noise, I haven’t tried it yet, but I was wondering if an uninterruptible power supply/UPS system would help with that since it isolates the incoming through the inverter😮

about the vintage tubes test you are planning to make, I would suggest cranking them up to 100%, they're supposed to add harmonic distortion when they go beyond a certain point where they're no longer responding linearly (I think)

Humidity can really change the sound. If it's noticeable in a studio would be interesting to test though. But if you want proof, just compare how things sound outside on a clear, dry day compared to a very foggy day. Yes, there's more to it than 'just' the humidity (eg. fog...) but it's a fairly simple way to hear that it does make a change. Again, I don't know how much the relatively small humidity changes in a confined space like a studio change the sound. Thinking as an engineer I can even see humidity affect the speakers and microphones. Speaker cones are mostly made from paper or cloth, so they do absorb moisture, which changes the characteristics of the materials. Would LOVE to see a comparison on that ;) "wet" vs "dry" speaker cones ;)

if tone is not in the hands , if Eddie picked up your guitar do you think he would sound like you . A professional guitar player has his own idiosyncrasies, timing , sustain and many other factors.. will the exact "tone" be the same close enough for Glenn , but will the tone be distinguishable ?If tone is that easy to master why do we have all these channels trying to teach instead of getting it taught ... maybe something is missing?

I use a Kitana primarily as a power amp as well and just run my Chug, and a host of other effects through. The only time I use the other functions of the Kitana is in the studio, which works perfectly. I could see how using a quad would be similar

As for the Air comment, Ill say it, in venues when room filling up and it gets warmer . It happened to me or even other engineer we get little feedback around 6k-8khz. Even after a spotless soundcheck... Of course people absorb sound which is why you should always check your max headroom in a soundcheck especially your low end. Often subs are positionned at ground level so bodies will absorb it. Remember a live mix has to push through your body and not slaughtering your ears. I come across way too many engineers mostly mixing in the high end spectrum.

Power is miserable in my apartment, too. Luckily, my macbook pro has a long enough battery life to let me track a few hours worth of DIs without needing to be plugged in. Also using the Focurite Scarlett Solo (gen 4) when tracking guitars at home because it runs off of usb-c power- so nothing is plugged into the walls when I'm tracking. I bet a cheaper macbook air would do the job just as well.
