Just a little correction: the Talgo coaches have no axle at all. The coaches are resting on two separate wheels between each pair of carriages. The wheels are running independently from one another. Even more fun fact: the wheels are connected to the roof (!!) of coaches with two big hydraulic stabilizers. That makes the passive tilting effect, too.

All Spanish passenger trains have been like that for a while, it's all multiple-unit trains and Talgo consists, and the service provided hasn't deteriorated nor have operational and logistical challenges increased because of it. Spanish trains are maintained better and more often than most others too, which greatly reduces the frequency with which an entire consist has to be put out of service and taken to repairs due to a defect. Plus, while not personally against conventional trains, multiple-unit trains give off a more modern, safe and clean impression to customers, a perception which in itself isn't without merit either.

And keeping everyone in the station before your train arrives has been a long-standing procedure. Yes, it's safety related.

There use to be service via the Amtrak Pioneer from Portland, Boise and then SLC but that ended back in the 90's and never returned. Which meant I had to take a bus overnight which was an expeience in itself.

Up until the pandemic hit and my job suddenly became full time work from home I rode the Sounder commuter trains that go through King Street Station on a regular basis, and a passenger shuttle to the building in SoDo that I worked in picked up and dropped off in front of the station. You have to have seen just how terrible King Street Station was before the restoration (everything was covered by drop ceiling tiles some time in the Sixties, and the place was just completely soulless) to truly appreciate how nice it looks now. I've also taken the Cascades service up to Vancouver several times, although I think I've been on the Talgo stock for only one of those trips. Also, one minor clarification: The Union Station you mention at 2:35 is a separate building on the opposite side of Fourth Avenue from King Street Station, which now gets used primarily as the headquarters of Sound Transit (the regional transit authority). The great hall of that station is a public space and is pretty interesting to see (lots of echo in there.) It is no longer in use as a train station, but the International District station of the Link Light Rail line (formerly also used by Metro and Sound Transit buses) runs right next to it. As for the scenery, there's also really great waterfront views on the northbound trip between Seattle and Everett and also as you approach and cross the Canadian border around White Rock BC.

A little further back in history, the trestle was originally built by the Weyerhauser Company. It serviced Weyerhauser's exclusive rail line all the way up to their old log sorting and loading yard which was located about 20 miles west of Mount St Helens. After the volcano erupted in 1980 and the yard was buried by the subsequent mud flows, Weyerhauser ceased operation on the line and sold out the trackage rights to the Columbia & Cowlitz RR.

Great review of the Cascade service. I have taken it many times and the Series 6 trains were much better than the Series 8 trains in my opinion including better seats and a better bistro layout. When I lived in Portland every Saturday I would take a walk through the Pearl District and past the station seeing the trains there wanting to be riding them somewhere. The future of the service is tentative at best and COVID making it worse. Personally, I think they are using the Talgo trainsets as a scapegoat for the problems that caused the derailment and I say that with the fact that I knew two of the three people who died in the derailment. I am pretty sure the horizon or amfleet cars would have suffered just as badly in that tragedy.

The Talgo 6 trainsets are non-compliant with FRA crashworthiness standards. Through a lot of bribery, they somehow got a waiver for these cars. On the other hand, the Talgo 8's are reinforced to better withstand accidents.

The talgo sets are brilliant. They are supremely flexible and very efficient due to the clever axle design. The Trenhotel version of the sets are great sleepers. Given how worn out and labour intensive the Superliners are to operate, it'd be good to see them phased out with Trenhotel sets. Also I think the Talgo XXI diesel high speed set could be a good way forward for high speed rail in the US. Sure it's not as fast as a true TGV or AVE like setup, but they can run on existing track without electrification at very good speeds (225kmh / 140mph) and the cost savings would make it much easier for Amtrak to roll it out on multiple new city pairs. Faster trains, quicker loading/unloading, reduced fuel consumption, reduced track wear.

I use the Cascades service several times a year to go to either Seattle or Portland. I rode the old Series 6 sets from the mid-2000s on when they were still fairly new. I really preferred the original cloth seats they had in both business and coach. The leather/vinyl seats were put during a refurbishment several years ago. I have seen several comments on different videos about the rough riding. They weren't always like that but maintenance was really cut back after the derailment as they knew they were going to be getting rid of them. They really deteriorated badly in the last few years. The last time I was on a Series 6 set was this past February, and they were really tired. Rough riding and the interior/seats were in terrible shape. The Series 8 trains are nice. A Horizon train set is supplementing the two Talgo sets and I definitely would rather be on a Talgo! The trestle/bridge over the Cowlitz River just north of Kelso is the old Weyerhaeuser Woods Railroad (a private logging railroad). It was used to haul logs from the Mount St Helens area down the the mills in Longview. Log hauling ended years ago but it still hosted regular freight trains to a landfill until a few years ago. As far as I know the line is currently up for abandonment. Where it crosses the highway there was a large sign on the bridge "DANGER - WATCH FOR FALLING LOGS" or something like that! Also, while on paper the train trip from Portland to Seattle (or the reverse) is noticeably longer than driving, in actual practice that is often not the case. Traffic in the Seattle/Tacoma area and Portland is often terrible!

@stephanweinberger4 жыл бұрын
@@B4T4LI4 Actually no, those pistons are anti-rolling devices plus they serve to turn the wheelset into curves. Talgos have a passive tilting system: The Talgo wheelsets have no axle; the wheels are mounted seperately in an U shaped frame. @GrantMcWilliams4 жыл бұрын
I like your videos. 02:24 A correction though that's common - Grand Central Station is actually Grand Central Terminal. No trains go through it so it's a terminus. Penn Street Station is a station. 02:35 King Street station was built by the Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway both owned by James A. Hill. Union station was built 5 years later for the Union Pacific Railway and Milwaukee Road Railway direct competitors to the former group. They are NOT the same station. Any train fan should go to both as their designs are polar opposites. The Union station is now run by Sound Transit for the Link Light rail. It has been restored and has bathrooms and a couple of businesses (when it's open). The tracks used to come into the south end of it one floor below like King Street but that has all been filled in and is covered by modern buildings. The streets in that part of town are elevated one floor above the earth where the trains reside. The Sounder Commuter train platform is right between Union Station and King Street station. In addition the First Hill street car travels in front of the stations, the old Waterfront Streetcar used to end there. If you go to Amtrak via either Sounder or Link you need to climb up to the surface, walk one block and then go back down. It would be nice to have a subterranean tunnel. All of these connections that get near to each other but don't actually connect make things complex for transfers making directions "interesting". The clock tower is an almost exact duplicate of the Campanile in Venice. It's shocking how close they are. 15:32 I talked to an Amtrak person and they said the Talgo equipment is nice but it's expensive to run even at low speeds. Every Talgo train has to have a Talgo serviceperson riding along all the time. You'll see him/her in the lounge car just waiting in case anything happens. I'm sure in addition to the cost of the equipment having an extra paid person just sitting there adds to it. I also asked why they never played movies on the overhead screens and he said it added $3 to every ticket for licensing. Adding 10% to the ticket price for movies only a few will even look at is probably not worth it. They just leave the map up now. I always thought considering the artsy fartsy people in the PNW they could find something to put on there like episodes of Portlandia or even just tourist videos. Also, the cafe car was closed when you was on it but every time I rode the Cascades I'd lobby the attendants for Ivar's Clam Chowder in the morning. They only sell it in the afternoon but it would be fantastic in those cold drizzly PNW mornings. I've always thought the Cascades should be the local train with all local food, beers etc on it since Oregon, Washington and British Columbia pay for it. Still, an enjoyable train and easy to get around, I used to ride it twice a week.

Hello! May I suggest that if you ever find yourself in Texas again, you should come to Austin (the capital) and ride our MetroRail commuter rail service. We have some very nice Stadler GTWs, and it's a lot like the TEXRail service that you've done a video on. The trip along the full line is 32 miles and takes about an hour, so it's not too long. I know you like European trains, so we have some perfect Stadlers for you! :)

@@OliversElevators More cities need trams. Smaller cities too, rail shouldn't just be a big city thing! Here in Maine, the entire southern and central part of the state was once connected by tram, even when the cities were only 10k people or less. Then the oil companies decided there should be buses instead.
@OliversElevators4 жыл бұрын
@xiii-Dex that’s exactly what happened here. We are a city of 2 million, but this being Texas, cars are the most prominent mode of travel and our politicians are lobbied by all the oil and gas companies here to favor cars. We used to have a whole streetcar system, but that closed in favor of buses. Now we have terrible traffic, one commuter rail line, and a bus system fit for a city of 500,000. We need to do something about it, but it seems like many people here don’t want this because it will raise their annual taxes by $400 and people are incapable of thinking about others. We’ll see what happens.

You mean trolley? (Must be that soda vs pop thing...). When I hear the word tram it's just associate with the elevated versions. FWIW oil companies did buy and kill off a few trolley lines but most died from lack of ridership after the the auto became ubiquitous but blank conspiracy theories are more fun. When the real blame is suburban sprawl that makes auto ownership a necessity, in mosts cases. So mass transit becomes just a tax burden used by the very poor. Its easy and fun to blame other ppl but whats needed is options that most ppl can agree make sense. Such as a HOV (carpool) lane that EV bus would use too for example???? Or just keep blaming other ppl?

Here’s an idea: Employ windows that can display messages describing the view outside. They would attract passengers and needn’t be very expensive. Kids would like them.

These cars were initially ordered for a Wisconsin Hiawatha extension, but the project was cancelled then, so now they are sitting in Talgo's maintenance facility in Madison, WI. though recently they were ordered by WSDOT since one of the Series 6 cars were destroyed, and Amtrak has announced they are replacing the Series 6 cars with the new Siemens Venture cars.

8:15 that's not actually a Boeing factory. It's an airport (usually called Boeing field although it's not the official name) that is where Boeing delivers all of the 737s to customers and finishes and delivers KC-46 tankers to the USAF. The aircraft are built in Renton (737) and Everett (Tankers). It's also home to Boeing's flight test program for commercial aircraft. I also prefer the trip North from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. It actually follows the edge of Puget Sound for a good bit between Seattle and Everett.

When taking any form of transportation, where your going to be sitting for an extended period of time, seats need to be very comfortable. These look like torture seats. Nothing I would consider, when a trip like this one, is so nice.

I will say that the Hiawatha route would not have benefited from the Talgo coaches. It is relatively flat and straight, so the tilting technology would be a waste of money. The Hiawatha needs new equipment in general, but I think Wisconsin chose the wrong equipment, but it is a shame how politics literally ruin everything in the states. Government projects in America don't aim to help the people, its just a form of buying votes which is seriously so sad.

Thanks for this video. I agree most of your opinions. I've done that stretch via Amtrak Coast Starlight and back in Talgo 6 consist. There are big differences. Riding on Superliner car is way more comfortable and I really like the old style diner experience at Starlight compared to more modern "European" like service at Café Bistro. I do agree about the seats that are a bit thin padded, width on them is fine for me. I think what was more noticeable for me is the noise insulation inside the car and somehow the slightly harshness of ride. I felt that the Talgo 6 cars don't ride as nice as those of TGV or ICE. But I also understand that the Amtrak Cascades consists are not riding on passenger only dedicated train tracks.

YOU would like to see Amtrak use more Euro style trains? Brother I've been riding the same Amfleet trains for my entire life, and the same damn Acela for 20 years! 😉 I would kill to have some of the trains I see you and Dylan ride every week. We ARE getting a nice set of Alston "Avelia Liberty" trains to replace the Acela trains which will definitely bring us in line with our Euro friends. While I won't miss the Acela, it's a shame to scrap them when most of the Northeast Corridor will still be tooling around in 1970's/1980's stock.
@banksrail4 жыл бұрын
Amtrak won’t scrap them personally. Amtrak only owns 1 of the 20 sets. So when they send them back to Bombardier we’ll see what they do with them.
@greyshadow94984 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the engines are getting tired, but Amtrak has engines older and harder working. The problem is the cars being a set. I've seen the whole train get pulled by P42's (power cars and all), but I imagine the passenger cars won't hook properly to those or the Sprinters. But that's 120 cars that should be perfectly serviceable with refurbishment if they can mate them properly. I never really cared for the Business cars, but they are still better than an Amfleet I
