Hello everyone, I hope you enjoyed my mini documentary on film photography. For some reason this video was unlisted for about a year and has been de-prioritized by KZbin's algorithms. Even if you type in the title in the search feature, this video won't show up. If you haven't already, please like the video, and if you can leave a comment. Tell your friends too. This should help boost the views again and have it back on track for more views. Thanks for all your support!!

Greg's comment on digital is spot on. On digital, you need to introduce a charactor to an image. This is exactly why I shoot film.
@TXGRunner5 жыл бұрын
Just three days ago I went to Champagne Court, met Mr. Chan, and purchased a Nikon F3/T film camera from him. Of my many film cameras, my favorite is easily the Olympus OM-4T, but the best picture I ever took was with a Contax III made in 1936. I bought the Nikon for the first hand experience of a highly regarded camera. Part of what I like about film is that cameras fit with my affinity for mechanical tools like rifles, cars, and watches. I mostly shoot film because film slows me down, compels me to carefully consider my shot, and motivates me to make an effort at getting a better photograph. The digital features are impressive and the instant feedback is nice, but I found myself just making scores of pictures of the same composition in quick succession while making little effort to find a better angle or proper exposure. Thanks for the video.

Very much enjoyed this video. I have been a photography enthusiast for 50 years. Exclusively digital of late, but as my son has a good eye for this medium - lots of irony there, but that's another story - I've wanted to share my early experience with him. We are now collecting as many of the cameras I have used at one time in the past - Braun Paxette, Rolleiflex, Hasselblad, Canon F-1, Minolta SRT-101, Minox 35, Rollei 35... that's a short selection of an extensive list. The search and discovery is a very enjoyable part of this journey, as is/will be the photography itself. And it's more than sharing an, almost, lost art. My son was born with Down syndrome, so his understanding of and skill in film photography has an even greater sense of meaning and accomplishment for us both.
@bigheadtaco7 жыл бұрын
thank you so much for sharing your experience and personal story. That's what I love about film photography. There's a strong connection with the camera itself, the photos that are created from it, and the stories that we attach to those memories. Keep an eye on my KZbin channel (Bigheadtaco) for more videos like this, although not with the same production level. Thanks again for watching and sharing. It means a lot to me :-)

What a great project. I love film. I started with film and I went back to it. There is just so much more life in this physical pictures. I love the fact that film photography slows down the whole process and that you have to create an even deeper relationship to your subject to get "the" shot. Not to forget the cool darkroom work, that makes your negative a piece of art.

For me no amount of lightroom presets, film emulations, and 1 Billion megapixel cameras will replace the beauty of a projected slide or a slide on a lightbox viewed with a loupe!

I have original slides from the SFX master: "Dick Smith" (rest in peace), and the colours are just beautiful. Especially viewed through light, as you say. So bright, so vibrant and clear. I do shoot with a DSLR, and I love it, but I do like that we still have the choice to use film or digital photography (and really you're not a photographer if you can't use your camera in manual mode). I really love the look of some old film. Greg Girard's photos were lovely to my eyes.
@bigheadtaco7 жыл бұрын
Greg is one of my favourite photographers from the previous generation of photographers who's still very active and still using film exclusively for his personal work. I'm sure he's excited about the return of Ektachrome, as am I. Yes choice is important, and shooting film doesn't mean you hate digital. I love digital, but I also love film. Thanks again for commenting.

Yes, many who grew up in the digital era want to go back to basics in many ways. Tube amps for music, spinning vinyl, and shooting with film. And there's nothing old about film. It's still a up to date process of capturing images, especially when you start getting into the larger formats.

The culture I think one of the aspects too that I enjoy. I'm both a digital and film photographer and each has their own meaning and use case for me, but there is something really enjoyable about trusting yourself with film, and tangible physical nature of it. That being said, film photography has changed the way I shoot digital too.
@bigheadtaco7 жыл бұрын
thanks for commenting Nick. Yes I think many feel it's either/or, but you can enjoy both for different reasons. I too believe that shooting manually, shooting with film, and even shooting with a rangefinder (so you don't necessarily see what you get (no depth of field POV, no exact framing on subjects close to you, etc.) makes you a better photographer. Digital gives you immediate feed back, and perhaps is a great scouting tool for film. However, I love going straight to film and take my chances. The more I shoot film, the more often my instincts are correct. Thanks for commenting!
@steveember89726 жыл бұрын
Nicely stated. I'm also pleased to be able to say that years of film shooting - including alongside digital - has served to make me a more deliberate D-SLR user.

Excellent Video! Thanks you. Having had a commercial photographer/cinematographer for a father, I grew with a darkroom and bulk rolls of 35mm film and shelves of 4X5 sheet film of various ASA/ISO configurations. I loved it all! I gravitated to digital as I could afford the new technology but lately I have wandered back to film after inheriting my father's Hasselblad kit. Thanks again for your informative and entertaining videos!

An excellent short video. I love film photography and need no convincing that it is alive and well. As you said in your video, there is something special about the process that makes it almost magical. It is an emotional connection that digital simply doesn't have, for me anyway.

And now I want to visit David Chan 陳烘 in Hong Kong!

I really enjoyed this video Take and well done. Love seeing film making a come back as that keeps film production alive, camera repair people actively employed, and allows me to continue shooting film everyday. It's hard to pin down why film is so great, but for me it's these four things... the cameras, the plethora of film stocks, the process of developing/printing, and the process of forcing me to slow down my shooting. Look forward to the next parts of the series, will be voting! Peace!

Shawn Brezny thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Everyone has different reasons, but yours resonates with me and others. Well done video, I enjoyed it. The video mentioned something that resonated with me. I am a "journey" person as opposed to a "destination" person. I like driving to a place (and all that goes with it) as much or more than what happens when I get there. And I guess that is what has taken me with regard to shooting film. I have a bunch of digital cameras and lens, some of which are very expensive, but lately I have become very interested in shooting film. I recently pulled out a 40-year-old Pentax film camera that I have, and I went about shooting with it. The "journey" was fun and it's a challenge to see what I could do with it. I plan on doing more of it. There is much to learn about modern films that are available, and it is fun and interesting to try them out.

Just started film photography after being digital for awhile. The experience is so great. Forcing you to be creative because of a select number of shots. And not knowing what you got till later. Then you get to physically have that memory instead a digital file that just gets looked at and passed on.

I worked with film only 4 years. Digital 16 years + But I like the characteristics of different films (B&W , Color Neg, Transparencies) I used in 35 mm, 120 or 4x5 format. We were serious when shooting with films because of cost & limited number of frames. We waited in photo labs to process films & get the prints. We used to meet other photographers there & could see what they are doing. Only those who could excel in photography can call him/herself a 'Photographer'.

I just bought a Kodak Tourist which was made in 1948. I have shot in film before but this will be the first time I shoot with something that neither has a focus or shutter control. I am sure it will be fun. There will always be enthusiast's like me who will keep film alive. :)

Film is, and will always be the standard of full-frame photography. I have a Nikon N60 and a Canon FTB. I also own. Nikon D300s DSLR. The film aspect allows you to think about your shot. Not taking anything away from Nikon and Canon DSLR full frames. I love them dearly. But the best feeling is waiting to see your film, once it's developed.
