The Anatomy Of A Deck Collection part1

To understand a collection is to begin to curate it on your own terms. I feel I want to explore my collection of decks, to dissect it, to gather information and move forward curating with more care. And so I am going to begin with part 1, exploring the unused decks in my collection.

For me my whys fell into these 10 categories which you can also use in a vr if they apply or add your own.

I can related to this so much! My main "why's" are KZbin Made Me Do It, Collector's Gene, FOMO, and Overabundance. I've rehomed the Modern Witch's Tarot due to the card stock. I love the art, but the deck is all but unusable for me and my small hands. I've gotten better about some things, though. I don't buy decks that require me to study a new system because I'm honest enough with myself to know I don't have the time or inclination to do that. I've also started bookmarking links to decks that I'm tempted to buy after watching someone's video. Then I go back later, revisit the website, and see if I still want the deck. It helps me avoid impulse buys!

One of the reasons I don't buy indie decks anymore is because KZbin made me do it kind of thing, I realized that I purged 90% of my decks, not fomo, not compulsive buy for me anymore, I'm feeling better and happier with the decks I have and the mass market that I REALLY want I will get and these are not expensive 🤭

When I get a new deck I always open it right away. I go through the deck and check for missing, damaged, or misprinted cards. That way if there's an issue I can contact the deck creator or publisher to get it resolved right away. Some may not help you if it's been too long since the deck was purchased or may not be able to help you if the deck has gone out of print.

I‘m so with you on those story telling decks and then drifting from there into children’s card games. Such a slippery slope because ‘I could bond over this with my child’ is such a convincing argument. Also, the wild wood: I’ve been putting off buying this because I’d want to take a year for the full experience. But if you get given it, you have to take it. It’s not going to go off, is it?!

I feel the same way about the Modern Witch, I have it but don't use it because of the cardstock. I love the all of the different faces of he She of Insight Oracle, so pretty. I do try to use Lisa's advice about buying decks and taking some time to stop and think about what I currently have in my collection that fills this niche. I'm getting much better and being super selective about what comes in to my collection. By the way you have beautiful petite hands, with fire in your palms, and magic that emanantes out of each unique finger. Much love to you Candy.

😂😂😂Unused decks: I had to laugh as I’m guilty of that too. I bought decks which Are still sealed waiting for a Special Occasion 😅: The Stretch Tarot, The El Goliath, Tatooed Tarot, Nuage Tarot and Embroidered Graveyard !!!!!! Well, Nuage is waiting for deep winter after the solstice, I don’t quite know the occasions for the rest of them😉. Watched both videos which was a delight. You are a pleasure to listen to ❤️🙏🌺🌹😊

Thanks much for this, Candy. You've got me thinking about why I don't use certain decks. I've used all of mine -- briefly. Many have that honeymoon period, some no more than looking at the cards close up then back in the box and away on a shelf. But lately I fell in love with a deck I was using daily, then the faeries up and made off with it...overnnight the deck simply disappeared and though I've looked everywhere for it, I cannot find it. And apart from my very own first deck I designed (the Open Face Tarot), I've found myself completely frozen and unable to use any other deck. So much so, that I went online and ordered another copy of the out of print missing deck. It is expected to arrive today and when I get it (used) and sage it, I hope I will be able to start reading again. I don't know why it's loss has made me feel that I can't/or don't want to, use any other deck. I did have another favorite deck that I feel I may have reset its energy last night by rehousing it in a new storage case.The color of the new case seems to suit the deck better and is giving it a fresh breath of new life. I feel more like I want to embrace it again. Even though the cards haven't changed, framing them in a new colored box somehow makes them feel like a new deck to me. I don't know what to make of that psychologically. But now I just want to hug that deck all the time. I have been going through a slow process of wanting to move decks out which I never use. It's hard to know though, if given time, a phase will come along where you are finally drawn back to use them. Moods shift and change, tastes change, and sometimes re-exposure to a deck by seeing others loving using it will make you think about it and drraw you back. Theres a lot here I think, in the psychology of what draws us to a deck and why/how we bond with it.

So interesting! I'm on a low-buy "depth year" - it's generally a depth year but I had to focus specifically on limiting tarot purchases. I didn't have a panic buy beforehand but I did have to allow myself a few decks after a few months, it felt like going "cold turkey" was too much, felt too deprived. So I went from a couple decks per month to one per quarter - I carefully managed a wish-list and yet one of the decks I purchased was still an impulse buy in a shop I shouldn't have gone into. And even the two carefully selected decks I got in line with my own rules - I'm not really using them anyway. One is in a category of cute/inner child decks which I already had plenty of, so it doesn't really stand out. And one is a pip deck with beautiful art but it's just so big I can't use it comfortably. Goes to show - even with careful selection there can still be some duds! I'd like to say I at least saved some money this way/wasted less, but not really, because instead of buying a few mass market decks I shelled out the same total amount on one indie. Still have some lessons to learn before my last quarter deck, and the end of this year long adventure. Thank you for sharing and inspiring a more inquisitive attitude.

Too large a deck it ties in with my card stock category doesn’t it, being careful and honest with ourselves over the surface features of a deck that may mean it’s not used. And your cute deck falls into that over abundance in a category. All so useful to consider moving forward. Thank you. I had a real "yes, me too" moment when you talked about decks for seasons. I have the Pre-Raphaelite Tarot and I used it in August because it gave me hot summer vibes. Likewise I have the John Bauer Tarot but not used it yet because for some reason it makes me think of winter and Christmas, so I'm saving it for December. Hope you get to dive into the Wild Wood at some point, it's one of my favourites.

My boss brought me a tiny TDM deck from France, which made me buy a larger deck (when I say tiny, it was only a 2"x1") and I use the tiny one as clarifiers. But then I found Elemental Power Tarot, which is TDM based and now I'm hooked on getting more lol

I have a few myself -- The Shimmering Veil and The Intuitive Night Goddess being two of them. I just have to make a concerted effort to get to know them. I love the art history tarot for past lives. It is a good deck to begin your past life journey with. I pair it with and it goes well with the Stretch tarot as well. I think I have seen u with that deck as well. Maybe begin with that deck since u r used to it and ease in with the art history deck.

I also have FOMO and YT made me do it and the one i didn't even think of till now is the"it's too special " I have a bunch of decks i more or less look at than use because they are too nice and i don't want to mess them up but i will be 62 in November so i think it is time to use those decks ! I just got Shimmering Veil used and it was my unicorn deck, so I'm not saving it after pining for a year and a half 💜😄 but, that said I have others I'm doing it with, limited edition ones for example, and certain KickStarters. But, didn't I get them because I liked them and wanted to use them in the 1st place? Yes. I'm not a collector. I need to use them. The more I think about it the more ridiculous I know it is, and how funny we are! Great discussion 😊

(For Marseille I read them as RWS and/or some Marseille/numerology meanings I use when reading RWS cards...hope that makes sense. I basically blended the systems and now it's just one thing to me. 😅 Though I am starting to learn playing card meanings, whereas currently I read those as the RWS/Marseille blend as well. I did a video at the end of last year of all the decks I hadn't used in 2021, but I'm curious now are there any I'd not used at all... Abundance is probably the biggest thing for me. Combined with not using that many at the moment. I see them as a collection for life though. There's time as you say. I definitely think I need a no buy year. I say having just bought Tarot Magazine in the supermarket cause the Arcanum Tarot looked "alright" and its a rainy day. 😆🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't pick a deck to use for a week or a month, I just pick intuitively for each reading, so I am tracking the decks that I don't use in a year, which isn't the same as never using them - but I know a big reason for me is I have most decks in boxes on my shelf, and the ones in bags are sort of out of sight out of mind. I have a marseille deck I've never used, because I haven't learned enough about the system. I had several lenormand decks and decided I only needed one, so I got rid of the others, but I use lenormand so infrequently that I've never used the one (celtic lenormand) I got to replace the other two or three. I have kahlil gibran's the prophet oracle deck, because I love the prophet so much, but I've never reached for the deck once. and I have a homestuck deck, which is based on a very long, very clever webcomic - which I've only read half of! so I wanted the deck since I love the webcomic, but I don't feel I can properly use it without reading the rest of it, and at this point it's been so long that I'll probably need to reread the first half....

I loved watching this. I thought I was the only person who had decks that were waiting to be used. I'm a RWS person and when I am given a deck that has a different system, I feel like I need to give it good service. I need to read the book. Explore each card. Right now, with my health issues, I just can't read. I sit and read the same line over and over. I get lost on the page. I get it in my mind that I can read by intuition only, yes, maybe that will work. But, am I doing the deck a good service? Thank you. I don't feel alone anymore.

Would love to do a VR about this, but I find that I use all of my (purchased) decks. The exception though is the pricey Mythical Creatures Tarot. I got it to focus on reading marseille inspired decks, but haven’t fully delve into it. Perhaps over the Yule holiday season since the deck jeweled colors remind me the winter Xmas holiday.😊

Such a great video, Candy. I can relate to all of your categories. For me there is one that's caused by unmet expectations, especially when it comes to my healing decks. If I have an idea for a ritual or way of using a deck on a special topic I go on a hunt to fulfill this "craving" - and sometimes it's just not what I envisioned, so I get another one etc. Does this make sense to you?!? Sometimes I have a hard time getting my thoughts across properly in this foreign language ... Anyways. Thank you for sharing. Some decks i buy because i love the artwork but i don't feel connected to them or work out when i actually hold them. Or i overconsume - i think i need more when i have decks waiting already for me at the shelf .
