After everything John Truby has done to help this channel (his book was mentioned in the very first video) it was a pleasure to have him on to talk about his new book, The Anatomy of Genres. John Truby is a Storytelling Genius. - Each genre' is a different "Story Type" reflecting a different "Life Philosophy". - Understanding different genre's leads us to understand life better and write better. - Genre's are not static. They are dynamic. - To become a top writer, we need to "Transcend beyond Genre's". - Twisting the story beat and blending genre's will take our storytelling to next levels.

@@chris-winterhoff-growth It's obviously not the same as lessons from the screenplay but it is the same as this video, so it doesn't make any sense for the op to say "we missed you Michael".

@@abstractdaddy1384 If a doctor gets a job in Germany only to return after a year, it is a reasonable thing to say "We missed you". Michael hasn't been frequent on this channel at all since the last upload besides this one was one year ago. He's been making a podcast, a completely different medium. Still similar content, but elsewhere. He's returned in this video, hence why OP said "We missed you". Makes sense to me.

Thanks for the inspirng talk to all three of you. What Truby says about transcending the genre and modifying the beats to create something new out of the known is exactly what the great composers did and still do in music. Beethoven, for example, had a lot of capable contemporaries who knew how to compose a symphony. But they did what had already been done. Beethoven on the other hand made something new of the symphony, starting with his Third. There is an anecdote of an older music professor listening to Beethoven's Fifth when it was performed for the first time. And when the concert was finished he supposedly stormed out of the building muttering: "To compose like that should be forbidden." Now, that's what I call transcending the genre 😉

A fascinating book. I’m not even a story writer, I just like to analyze stories. And as a philosopher I find the unusual application of philosophy to genres most entertaining.

I echo 49:43 where she says how people watch stories. Its the same way i feel about anime only fans when they watch anime they watch it like one would watch wrestling they dont seek to understand because it’s always shock value and big pops for them. Primary example is Chainsaw Man, mangaka work hard to draw from multiple sources to tell their stories outside of the medium of anime but when your fan base ( generally speaking) only takes in once source of entertainment and information they don’t appreciate what you’re trying to say or do with your work.

Sorry if this has been asked already on this channel, but I was wondering if east asian stories have been examined on this channel? I say this because a lot of anime and manga stories are overall polarizing: loved by the fans, dismissed by many in a western business sense. e.g. "Japan is too random. Their culture is too different, their story structure is incompatible with our 3 plot structure that the west uses," etc. Is Japan's 4-point-plot style (ki-sho-ten-ketsu) so different it requires a fundamentally different perspective?

I think the hardest genre to write in, at least for me, are bleak horror movies. From a thematic standpoint, these stories often deal with the futility of our actions (bad things happen for absolutely no logical reason, and all you can do is observe), which often leads to rather passive characters. And still, these types of horror stories (Junji Ito's work, Lovecraft, the films Suicide Club and Martyrs) are the ones that stick with me the most. Any advice on fixing this issue of passive characters?

I would love to see you analyse Promising Young Woman. I don't know that much about movies, but i felt like i had been deceived while watching it, like it pretended to be different genres (colourful pop horror or dark vigilante insinuations through the trailers and marketing, all the male actors were well known comedy good guys, ...) to hide what it was really about.
