I've literally read hundreds of writing books and Truby's are always at the VERY top of my list. Already read this book 2x (a few weeks apart) and each new reading brings such a profound understanding of my own genre that I didn't posses prior to reading. Truby is such a gift to writers.

Just FYI but the thriller chapter has over 16k words alone. If anyone hasn't gotten this book, definitely get it. It is so comprehensive.

at about 20.50 Truby speaks re: crime genre vs. detective genre. That difference, as he summed it up, is also perfectly illustrated, I think, in "The Fugitive." ... "I didn't kill my wife." ... "I don't care." - It's like he's saying, "sorry, man, this is a crime/action movie not a detective one. I don't care about the truth, I just need to catch you."

Truby’s books are for learning, not just reading. You have to read multiple times and study, digest the material. Think of how long he takes to write the books. I can attest to this by have eat slept and drank Anatomy of Story and in taking his online class watching other that knew the information and others that were clueless.

This man is storytelling god, not kidding. He helped me so much in understanding how to craft a story, how to read and understand a story and especially how to deconstruct writing advice given by other coaches. I really wish I could go on and bring his view of story out into the world (especially into my little author circle in Germany), but in the end everybody has to find his philosophy for themselves. Did I say philosophy? His work helped me a lot with my studies of cultural anthropology as well - even cited his Anatomy of Story in diffrent assignments and used his advice to structure my thesis (and my research beforehand to a certain amount as well).

Thank you for this - this is my second podcast I’m listening to today with Mr Truby. I have taken film classes and studied film and psychology - practiced law. And always always hit my head on any story telling of my own with Campbell’s hero journey. It doesn’t fit the female journey - and I tried to make it work. It’s more than just plugging in a kick ass woman into what is usually taken up by the male protagonist. Also the tokens that the male hero collects - like the blessing from mother and the beautiful virgin as a reward at the end - also doesn’t fit - and in fact, is reductive to the female persona. Anyway, thank you for this. I’m rewriting three projects now 😂😂😂

What are the drama techniques? Is that the 36 dramatic situations or are there other drama techniques? If so, where can we find them? Thanks :)
