“Use the wiki” is why i never got into terraria, the entire game felt overwhelming to learn that i never got past the 1 hour mark of gameplay because it all seemed so hard to get a hold off. You should start by playing with a knowledgeable friend. Not only is playing with friends super fun, if they know what they’re doing you’ll never need to use the wiki and they can guide you and allow you to experience things naturally as well.

@@DesignDelve I personally didn’t enjoy the permadeath mechanics in the game because losing hours of progress isn’t very fun for me especially in a survival game. Like imagine if minecraft was always on hardcore mode. Another reason I didn’t really enjoy it was because I didn’t feel like it had any interesting end-goal or short term goals. After an hour or two I felt like I ran out of stuff to do in the game unless I just waited for something to happen. I did explore quite a lot but the map feels very boring as well, there’s not really anything big to find in the world. Something important to note though is that I was playing the original game with only the first DLC (I forget the name) and I’ve heard Don’t Starve Together has a lot more content

My first experience was one alongside others who had already played for a while. So, I didn't have to check the wiki at all. Even once we went beyond their knowledge of the game I still found myself simply running into things without looking for them actively. Many times I found myself dying a horrible death to something that I shouldn't have been taking on with the equipment I currently had. A great video, loving the greenscreen gags. Another smasher brother. I have never played this game without the Wiki open on another screen and I do feel that is a fairly "cop-out" design choice by the developer to not include some more hand-holding steps on how to progress, especially for new players. There is also the argument that it's a game about finding out yourself but if you did that then you would miss so much. Anywho, another smasher and after Celest, I didn't think the comment section Kevin bit could get any better. I was creasing like an old man's scroat 10/10 will loop again.

Terraria is one of my favorite games, hands down. It features great progression, and most of all freedom. You can literally do anything in this behemoth of a game. IMO it easily wins against Minecraft due to more and less repetitive content. You play this game for 5 minutes and you get hooked for the next few millennia. Each time you do anything, there remains a question to what to do next. Let's say you just entered Hardmode. Do I grind for Hardmode ores or do I grind for Forbidden Armor instead. Terraria offers you these choices and you can literally do as you wish. This is why the game is so intriguing and the reason why it is my top favorite game of all time. 420/69 game.

Unlike games like Elden Ring or Genshin Impact, your game world is not tied directly to your character, meaning when you and your friends progress together, that progress is actually shared instead of being like "okay we'll do this in your world first, then do it AGAIN in my world"

Weird timing, but me and some friends played terraria to completion* just last week for the first time, i've played the game a lot in the past but never got much past the wall of flesh. For this play through we all tried to not use the wiki as we had forgotten most of the game anyway so it felt new and there was a point where we decided to just use the wiki anyway, you can just hit 1 thing you didn't know and it halts the entire game, for us we didn't realise you could craft things to summon the mechanical bosses, so we felt like we were just stuck with no alters to smash and no way of getting the bosses back. The progression is perfect and i don't think it's possible for a game this deep to guide you the entire way, unless it had it's own form of wiki within the game (similar to how minecraft shows you everything you can craft and lets you work backwards) then i think it's just one of those things that is needed for this game.

I think one of the smartest thing that Terraria got right is the fact that there's always something to push you from just sitting around building for too long. It could be a blood moon event, a boss appearing, or something more subtle like the blood or corrupt biome eating away the world. Also, the game is very quick in pushing the player to move beyond the third boss, so the small achievements and pacing in-between the bosses are kept relatively short.

@@DesignDelve I actually played it with a few colleagues at work during lunch not long after the game came out. I think back then the final boss was the golem from the pyramid. Back then they didn't have the various roles and gears, and they certainly didn't have some of the newly added biomes. But nonetheless, we were all astonished by freedom of what we can do and build together. In fact, one of our favorite activity is, try to pour the sea into "hell" and see what would happen. I think the most fun that came from this game is the fact that they let us do crazy things and build crazy things. This is why I really love the endgame rockets and tile breaking weapons of mass destruction. Eventually at some point after all the building and exploring people are just going to get tired and still they would just let you destroy the world to your heart's content. That added many more hours of good time into the game.

@@DesignDelve to be honest I think the end game came a little too suddenly. I understand that the developers may be concerned about the game becoming stale and boring, especially after players spend so much time building already. but after killing the cultist, the game just become a full action game, collect loot, repeat until you kill the final boss. And before you know it, everything is over. You can try to kill the cultist again and just go through the same thing again, or you can avoid the cultist and continue on the ludic play. But at that point, the game is really over, make you wish that there is just something more, maybe something to enhance the ludic gaming post game a little more. Ummm... Maybe searching for components to open up yet more tool for building things that's previously not possible, large scale terraform, allowing players to create monsters, or have NPCs appearing with new towns that grows into fortresses on the map that will go to war with the players town. I don't know, just something more post game that's not tied to a boss would be nice.

It’s tricky isn’t it, like I mentioned in the video the game is so freeing but it does seem to come to a close rather fast, I would have preferred some optional bosses or events post moonlord that would have been enough to keep me going. @@DesignDelve Good question. I might have stayed. However, my wife has only just got into gaming and has been spoiled by how intuitive It Takes Two is. I think there's a fine balance between needing tutorials and being intuitive - I'm more of a fan of "intuitiveness"
@DesignDelve
@DesignDelve 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the complexity of it systems at play, It Takes Two is a fantastic game but all its controls are compartmentalised, meaning they all originate from the same buttons, so it’s a lot easier to grasp. Terraria on the other hand had simple controls just a lot of complex systems to understand. It depends on the game 😁 I 100% agree Terraria needs to add something to help new players!

I couldn't really get into Terraria. I tried it out after my friend shut down the Minecraft server he'd been running and I didn't want to start all the dumb projects I'd been working on over so I thought I should try something similar but different, and this seemed to me like Minecraft but 2D (which on further reflection what I was expecting probably isn't really something that's even possible). Maybe it was just that it didn't match up with my expectations back then but it just didn't grab me. Perhaps I should give it another try.

I think you can play it the way you envisioned it. It just needs to be modded or you have to get to end game of its progression and tbh that’s a fault of the games. If you can get a few friends together I think it can be a wonderful experience!

Having that extrinsic motivation to aim for late game items is a motivation system in its self! @@DesignDelve It's as you said in the video, being able to switch classes (or even using armours that benefit two classes like the Old one's army sets) gives a lot of freedom to the player, & lets them approach events/bosses or even new biomes in different ways in the same playthrough. This keeps the game exiting & gives it a lot of replay value, without even tapping to the multiple difficulties that fundamentally changes a lot of things in it. When it comes to the editing of the video, this might be just me but at times it was a bit difficult to hear you(music volume is a bit to high maybe?), I had to rewind or use auto-generated subtitles to properly understand what you said. @@DesignDelve Perhaps down the line 😂, which means go for the games you like the most and those, that are interesting to you from a game design standpoint. There are so many games out there, and i think its cooler if you tackle games, that others haven't played/considered yet to play. Minecraft could get you clicks(which would also be nice) but there are many people that already played it, so i don't think there would be many "new" things/perspectives you could show. Nevertheless, it would be awesome to hear your thoughts on the scarce use of music in Minecraft, but that sounds more like a topic for april fools day in my mind. Therefore, just do what you like best and i keep watching, liking and commenting. (Besides, I'm still at the edge of my seat for that anatomy of Hitman video you talked about at the end of the Hades one, but no pressure 😂. Also I would be interested in a card/deck builder game like Slay the Spire or Dicey Dungeons, but as I've said, these games are down the line, so I'm looking for every new video of yours, because they are all awesome.) That’s completely fair with wanting to stop. And yes there is a difference 😁 ludic play can expand to creating your own set of rules to play by within a games own set of rules. Be it, I’m going to stay on the right side of the road and stop at all the lights in GTA, you don’t have to do this but if you wanted to you could.
