Welcome to Château Avensac. Today Phillip is going to show you around the Ancient wing of the Chateau built in 1320 and remodeled in the early 1800's. We also have in store for you a VERY special interview with an important member of our team who has refused to be seen on camera until now. We hope you enjoy todays journey as we further explore Chateau Avensac in the south of France.
We are at the very beginning of our Château restoration/renovation, and we hope you will like and subscribe to the channel and join us for this fascinating journey.

About us
Two American boys following a dream to purchase and restore a Historic Monument in the south of France. Welcome to Château Avensac!
Our Channel, At the Chateau, will focus on the restoration and celebration of this listed French castle designed in the late 18th century, and built in the beginning of the 19th century, on the ruins of the original 14th century Château.
In 2015 we began an adventure to own a French Chateau. It has been a long journey, and in September of 2021 we became the protectors of this incredible property that we now call home. I keep an ongoing record of the long road to Château ownership, and you can visit our website by clicking on this link... www.atthechate... - If you would like to receive my newsletter that announces new posts, please visit the website and subscribe.
You can also find us on instagram at atthechateau.france or / atthechateau.france
And FaceBook at / atthechateau.france
We would like to thank all of our Patrons who are helping to restore this historic monument, their contributions are invaluable to our efforts. If you would like to become a patron of Château Avensac, follow this link, / chateauavensac

HI MARK!!! It's lovely to meet you! I hope you'll gradually become more comfortable in front on the camera, if not, your contribution to getting these wonderful videos out to us has not gone unappreciated. Phillip, thank you for your perseverance despite camera glitches! I'm certainly not the only viewer who is loving the content you're putting out. Honestly, until the last couple of videos, I had no idea how large the property was. Thanks for showing it off, warts and all. xoxo

Mark, I am a survivor of spinal surgery. I severely herniated a spinal disk back in 2006 and was paralyzed from the waist down for 3 months on my left side. I was fortunate that my right was fine and was able to walk - well, hop on one foot really - but with the help of crutches and perseverance, after those 3 months and believing that I would walk normally again, I recovered. It took 5 years of perseverance and positive thinking to get me there, but today (since Oct 2011) I walk normally, on both legs and with minimal pain or no pain at all. I am here to encourage you. I too cried because I felt all my dreams of living and accomplishing the things I most wanted in life were ended. It took the intervention of a good friend to remind me that all was not lost and that as long as I kept the end goal - walking on both legs - alive, I would get there. There were days where it took all my courage to simply rise out of bed. Other days, were difficult ones where all I accomplished was 1 thing - like washing my dishes. It might have taken me 4 hours to wash 4 plates, 2 cups and knives and forks and rest periods between, but it was an accomplishment for that day. After falling at home one day, I lay there crying and berating myself for being foolish. I looked up on my wall and found a piece of paper that I had written and pasted there a week before I was injured. "Though there are days where the sun does not shine, 80% of the others do." It reminded me of my dreams. On that floor, I took the decision to never talk of having a 'bad, terrible, horrible or miserable' day. I decided there and then that even if it took me 45 minutes to walk 10 feet, that it would be a good day. From that point on I would describe my days as good (I accomplished 1thing completely), difficult (I had trouble getting out of bed, but made it and accomplished 1/2 of something) and a challenging day (it took me an hour to roll off the bed, 2 hours to get dressed and walking 5 feet took 20 minutes). By focusing on the end goal ever day, no matter how I felt physically, I was able to get to the end of the long road. You will too. Smile, joke with your friends, read what interests you, rest when you need to, push yourself a little more every day but not beyond what your health care team recommends. As your spinal column releases the swelling you will get to do more and more. Stay positive. You'll get there. Philip, continue to encourage him. I'm glad you are there to support him. take care both of you. From a friend 'across the pond' and north of the 49.

Foret, I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to tell your story and the words of encouragement. I am so happy that you have returned to normal life and that the horizon looks good. I will admit that the five year part scared me, but I am determined and incredibly patient right now. I have PT 3-4 hours a day, depending on the day, 7 days a week. The rest of the time I stay in this semi reclined state so as to keep the nerve channels open for healing. I discovered early on that the wheel chair hurts my, and cuts off my femoral nerves. My numb legs fall asleep and that cannot be good for the healing process. So I stay here, patiently waiting. Not to say that we do not get out, but we see it to a minimum and we know that we will have plenty of time to go out and about later. My sincerest thanks to you and our best of wishes, Mark and Phillip
@foretb1162
@foretb1162 Жыл бұрын
@@atthechateau Thank you for your update and reply. I accidentally fell upon your channel that day but believe it was meant to be. Have you spoken to your PT about the wheelchair? See if they can offer a modified back for it. There are wheelchairs that have a titled back and chair seat panel rods as well as density cushions for a more comfortable 'sit'. I had to sit in one for 12 hours on the initial injury when in the ER and found the same as you. You are fortunate to have been lent a hospital bed with a lift-out bar! I only had a flat mattress, was advised that PT was not recommended and being it was due to a car accident, the auto insurance company stated the accident didn't happen because there was minimal damage to the vehicle. Every treatment I had was from out of pocket. I almost went bankrupt! Two types of treatments that helped a lot was working with a kinesthesiologist and a reflexologist. It was very painful at times but it helped - a lot! It kept me limber enough to be able to not have a foot drop after only 3 months of tenacious - 3 x a week - therapy. I kept going back because the treatments were beneficial to not only my recovery (3 x a week once the paralysis started to ease then 2 x, then 1/wk, then 1/10 days, etc.) but also my state of mind. Instead of wallowing in my misery, I was getting out of the house. At first, I had issues with letting people "see" me in that state. I'm a very private person who, at the time, didn't like imposing on others for help. Through that moment in my life I learned that there's nothing wrong with asking for help. I met wonderful people who truly wanted to help me heal and grow emotionally. They helped me see that it wasn't pity but genuine caring and compassion. If someone offers to help you, look into their eyes - there you'll see the truth. Friends in particular are the most precious of all help. For, "friendship is the jewel that only the cushion of the heart can be its resting place." Take care.

@@foretb1162 Hi Foret or as we say in France rebonjour ! I will tell you that we have tried everything with the chair, and in truth I am ok in it for a couple of hours, maybe three, but when I try to stand up (using a verticalizer) my left leg has become numb and I loose what little control of it that I do have. Not a big deal as I do not mind being in the semi reclining position and focusing on my PT or my work. I have put myself in recovery mode, and that is all that matters right now. I am determined to move beyond this, so if chairing around and having a good time is detrimental to recovery, then it can wait. We do on occasion go out, dinner, a drive through the countryside, my extra PT five days a week, but most of the time I am in the cave... That's what I call it, Lol. I know what you mean about being drained of money! The French system is great, but they have very specific ways that things are to be handled, and if you do not fit in the box you are screwed. Anyone in my situation is to be in an institution, no if ands or buts. We tried it for two months, and it did not work for me on so may levels. They claim 4 hrs of PT a day... that is why we went there.... the truth... a 4 hour block of time (2 morning, 2 afternoon), but... each physical therapist is dealing with 4 - 6 patients at a time. So you get 20 minutes in each 2 hour block. The rest of the time is like... go squeeze a ball between your legs. Nothing on the weekends or holidays, you just sit in your room waiting for the days to pass. Add to that, Doctors in charge that do not understand anyone that has a voice of their own. We broke all the "rules" with Phillip being in the room with me most of the day and the evening. The clinics do not want spouses around for some reason. I did not need any medical care other than very personal care, and I insisted that Phillip be the person doing those things. The nursing staff understood and really enjoyed having Phillip there and the higher level of care that he was able to give due to their own time constraints. We left for a lot of reasons, too many to go into here, and went home. Corinne, my main PT comes 3 hours a day, 7 days a week. One on one massage, flexing, and exercises. We pay for her out of pocket. The healthcare is coving the bed (the overhead bars I insisted on and fought for!!). The healthcare also covers the nurses that come in three times a week to change my catheter bandage (it goes into my abdomen as opposed to up my private parts), and the second PT that we go to Mon - Fr in the afternoon for 40 minutes each time. The healthcare will not cover any other equipment... the verticalizer, the parallel bars, etc... because, if you need that type of equipment you should be in a clinic. sigh... between Corinne and the equipment we have spent a fortune, with no end in site. I owe my recovery speed to Corinne. If I was relying on the system it would take years and years! I am not quite a year in from complete paralysis, and I am able to stand at the parallel bars, next step is literally... step! But I need my left leg to wake up more. I have met many great people and I have great support. And as always, I have my sense of humor!!!

@@atthechateau I have two cats of my own. A mother and her daughter. I got them from the shelter. As I live in Pasadena, they obviously needed Victorian names. The mama is The Lady Eugenia Isabella Underfoot, and the baby is named The Princess Theodora Esmeralda Underfoot (as they usually always are).

Mark I know you may feel that you want to wait until…. This or that. But from one who had a life changing injury believe me that no one is ever their best . If we all waited for ‘ the right time’ other opportunities will pass us by. No one here knows how things were before and so to us we just find you as you are now , that is not a bad thing but to reassure you that our journey with you starts here…and Your hilarious comments on screen I find uplifting and laugh out loud . This helps me and I’m sure gives joy to the many that watch too. This channel gives us an amazing window into your glorious chateau and that you not only have a full time job of trying to get and stay well along with helping to create these vlogs is admirable,so thank you. I do wish you courage and hope for each day . And that you have a good view of your park and garden from the chaise/ bed❤. As for me sometimes all I can do is watch these vlogs online from my bed….

Brownowl34, your comment brought tears to my eyes and I thank you for a completely different perspective. I will do some thinking on this. I have agreed to be a little more on camera in a, sort of, What is Mark doing? kind of thing. We are thinking it through and looking for ways to make it interesting and entertaining. I do have a lovely view from my little cave and I enjoy what I see going on in the word outside my window. I may be reading a little too much between the lines, but I hope you are well and we wish you all the best! ❤️

So lovely to put the face to the wit of the captions and Judy. 😂 You do what is comfortable and good for you for pushing ahead and keeping progress moving! Wheelchair will eventually be a thing of the past, Judy will make sure of it. ;) A thought for the note on the wall....talk to a conservator and consider affixing a frame with glass to the wall and do the rest of the room decor with that in place. May be better than trying to move it. Conservator may have info on how to make sure the paper stays together longer too. 🤷

We all go through rough times in our life and later we can see what growth we made during that rough time. Even though, at this time Mark, you are not pointing and plastering walls, you still are contributing big time through all the planning. Don't be shy or uncomfortable with filming in a wheelchair.
