It certainly feels more complicated than it is when teaching the game. Having said that, once a turn goes by, folks start grokking it and with the 5 people I have taught this game to, all have really enjoyed it.

I own all of Laukat's games and Ancient World was second only to Islebound as my favorite. I still think City of Iron is his best game (though not my favorite) and the 2nd edition of Ancient World only improved the game. I still like Islebound for its elegance but it's not completely balanced (diplomacy > military). Ancient World 2.0 is a far better game (as a game and not an experience) than Near and Far, which while a great story experience is a so-so race game that I've become less enamored with as I've played it (probably 15-18 times). All in all this, Islebound and CoI are Laukat's standout big box games so far.

Tom, with all due respect, you should know and tell us whether or not components you show are from an upgrade kit. We want to know what we are going to get if we buy the game at retail.

sorrowsong At about 8:30, Tom mentions some components and says he does not know if they are part of an upgrade kit. This is an example, and Tom has done this kind of thing before, of Tom showing components and saying something like “I don’t know if these are upgraded or not.“. I know what an upgrade kit is. My comment is asking Tom in the future to please identify whether components are upgraded or not. I don’t think people, including me, will be very pleased if we buy a game retail and then discover that we did not get what was in the video, and no one had mentioned it. Yes, one can go and attempt to research this sort of thing. Not always easily done.

I agree in principal. But in this instance Tom is safe because those wooden workers are in the retail edition of the second edition. Only the metal coins (Not shown in this review) and some ink changes to the box are Kickstarter exclusives. So it looks like Tom received the retail edition. (I spent 2 mins searching BGG for this info so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). The upgrade kit is for owners of the 1st edition wanting the changes in 2nd edition. i.e. not the topic of this review.

The first edition was my first kickstarter board game. Such a great game. Beautiful art, the mechanisms are solid - how the military learns and gets better. One of my favorites.

Agree on all counts. I really enjoyed the theme and the art... feels puzzley as there is a lot to manage... would not recommend for non-gamers.
