I like how they bend their accents to make the rhymes sound better.

It is funny hearing people with "Minnesotan Accents" to try to sound like carribean islanders. The Andrews Sisters were one of the best from the Jazz Era.

Ah the good ol days, when casual racism wasn't even noticed

Which part of this was about race? It was just about prostitution unless you are applying only one race does this and you need to say which cause anyone can be one also there is a line that was dropped off just showing the looseness if the locals for the Americans but not once race was really highlighted

@@someperson4397 Even as late as 2011 the island is only 0.6% white, with the other 99.6% some shade of brown, mostly of African & East Indian decent. White women singing a fun ditty about the native women "working so very hard" is making light of brown peoples living in poverty and making ends meet by serving themselves to the (mostly white) American servicemen stationed on the island during the war. This is racist b/c it implies that it is OK for poor POCs to earn their living this way, it's all fun and games when people who don't matter as much as your white audience are sex workers. In fact, it's probably to be expected b/c they probably are of loose moral character anyway, and women of color are more highly sexed too. None of this needs to be spelled out in the song b/c the intended audience already understands it. The song is only reinforcing beliefs and stereotypes that have existed as long as colonialism. This would be a very different song (one that didn't get radio play) if it were from the perspective of the sex workers; or if the sex workers were poor white women servicing the soldiers at her local railway station in middle America. Then listen to the fake Trinidadian accents. Their singing is the vocal equivalent of blackface. Not to mention the cultural appropriation of the native calypso beat,. There are many many ways to be racist . If you have an honest interest in how this song fits, I suggest finding some bipoc creators on this platform who discuss the subject. Princess Weeks, and Lil Bill are both good, there are many others out there. I am only responding in hope that you wrote that comment in legitimate ignorance and not as part of some alt-right playbook attempt to engage me in argument. I hope my response was helpful to you :) Have a blessed day

Also, thank you for pointing out that they are prostitutes. I actually hadn't listened carefully enough to pick up on that subtext, lol. I read the helpfully-supplied lyrics of another commenter and particularly enjoyed the stanza where they make sure to let the queer boys know there's something for them too. The whole song reads like a recruitment poster! "Join the Military!!! See the world! Have a girl (or boy) in every port!" Lmao

@thevirtualtraveler it happens just seem every one is dropping race when it is not needed , also there had an original version and calypso rose sang it to if I remember correctly but too lazy to double check. Also you should listen to woe is me, shame and scandal in the family lmao😆
