Interesting, the soprano line adds a passing tone toward the end before the "Gloria", the next to the last measure.

See the notes to #196 in The New Oxford Book of Carols (#117 in The Shorter NOBC). Pettman published both readings - with and without the added B in the penultimate bar. Both the Basque original, and the Pettman/Baring-Gould English arrangement are given.
@steveg54532 жыл бұрын
I spotted that too. Also interesting: five notes instead of four in the last measure of each verse.

is a Basque Christmas folk carol about the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary by the archangel Gabriel that she would become the mother of Jesus Christ the Song of god. A Basque folk carol, originally based on Angelus Ad Virginem, a 13th or 14th Century Latin carol,[2] it was collected by Charles Bordes and then paraphrased into English by Sabine Baring-Gould, who had spent a winter as a boy in the Basque country. The tune is called "Gabriel's Message".[3] It is commonly performed in an arrangement by Edgar Pettman published in his 1892 book Modern Christmas Carols. In 2012, Kalakan trio performed an arrangement of this song based on the Basque oral tradition during the introduction of the show of Madonna's MDNA tour.

OK, now I've looked at the comments, and apparently some of you Philistines have been singing "most highly flavoured gravy" in your CHOIRS! I'll have you know, I was in a choir here in Thunder Bay, Canada that performed this carol and we NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF THIS. (... pity, I wish we'd been more worldly!) 😛

Thank you! You took me back 40-odd years with that one too. I think every choirboy thought they were the first to come up with that line!

It's common for bored choristers to muck about with the words of the text for a laugh. "While shepherds washed their socks" "Hark the herald angels sing, Beecham's Pills are just the thing" etc. One of my favourite from a 1960s childhood is "We three Beatles of Liverpool are: one in a taxi one, one in a car, one on a scooter tooting his hooter, following Ringo Starr."

@jamesjarvis33286 жыл бұрын
@GODOFHELLFIRE3 I don't know a single chorister who hasn't made this joke. It is hardly ruined - in fact, it made it better for me as it reminded me of messing around in choir rehearsals. Of course, if you're a troll (with a name like godofhellfire3) then you did a good job and I took the bait. ;D

The flavoured gravy is meant to be funny. [Whoever placed it there?] The Basque will never sing this hymn that way ... oh, it's a translation. No wonder! I got this video clip just the same, edited it and placed the correctly translated part on the wrong ones. Easy...

Lovely old carol. But tell me, why is it called 'an old Basque carol' when I've never heard anyone at all sing it in the Basque language? Or is this a case similar to "I prefer it in the original Klingon."?
@KyneburgheHannah4 жыл бұрын
Are you Basque? The video I watched before this was a Basque choir singing this in Basque while standing behind the altar as the priest prepared the "table" for the Holy Sacrifice. That was disappointing because Basque is such an ancient language that the Mass should always be celebrated in the ancient way, even if in the vernacular.
