There is other historical evidence for the destruction of this army. Firstly the Sennacherib Cyllinder shows and scholars agree Sennacherib and the assyrian army were unable to capture Jerusalem, which would of been unusual considering the circumstances seeing as Jerusalem was quite defenceless, evidence being also in the Cyllinder of the bounty Hezekiah gave and also that the Assyrian army was one of the greatest of that time. Also the greek Herodotus 2:141 gives an account of the army being destroyed. You can also read about it in Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, Book X, Chapter 1, paragraph 4 & 5. Sennacherib fled apparently with the rest of his leftover army, went back to Ninevah and shortly died after that at the hands of his sons, may be in part his failure to secure Jerusalem. Sennacherib died 681BC, the assyrian empire fell approximately 612 - 609BC, about 70 years later. They approximate that the assyrian army could of been about 300,000 plus at its height, if this was still the case at Sennacherib reign, it could of left them with approx 100,000 to take Egypt in 671BC. However many scholars are surprised of the assyrian empires sudden and quick downfall soon after, some believing they were just running out of troops, as it required alot of effort to take egypt. They were clearly in demise, stamping out rebellions and losing to the Babylonians in the end, not expanding.
