The Angles Way Long Distance Trail. Part 6 - Knettishall to Thetford. The final stretch.

Күн бұрын

In this video I am finishing the the final leg of the last section of the Angles Way on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, a long distance trail stretching for 96 miles from Great Yarmouth to Thetford and following the rivers Waveney and Little Ouse.
Leaving my riverside camp spot, I walk through beautiful Knettishall heath and to the intersection of three major long distance footpaths - the Angles Way, the Icknield Way and the Peddars Way, the footpath that started this massive loop of Norfolk that I have been walking over the past few years.
After Knettishall, the trail follows the Icknield way, taking a big loop across sandy heathland, through Breckland pine margins, past huge open fields and vast country estates before hooking back into the ancient town of Thetford, which has been inhabited by our ancestors since the neolithic period.
Thetford is where my journey ends for now - the official end of the Angles way. But an ending is just the start of a new beginning, and so, all that is needed now is to make a decision - which trail to explore next…
I hope you enjoy the video,
Thanks for watching.

6:28 and 15:26, Magnificent tree, ethereal, whimsical, and shades of Middle Earth, or Dr. Seuss. Something I appreciate about Simon's walks and camps is his spotlighting these extraordinary trees and other notable plant life. 21:56, The East Anglia walks are delightful and informative for those of us across the pond. So, Yes. Please put more of them in your series.

Thank you Simon for taking us along with you. I think you are one of the most talented video creators on you tube, you have a great way of finding just the right music that goes with the pictures, to many people on you tube seem to put way to much face time in there videos rather than the area they are in, and to be honest it’s the views of the areas that are the real starts of the shows. Thank you again as I know how much time you put into making these videos, you will have some wonderful memories when you’re older and sitting by the open fire telling your tales to anyone who will listen.

What a walk, Simon. As ever with you and your videos, you made it so interesting with your knowledge of the area and giving historical facts, I really enjoyed it. Cheers, mate. I hope your foot is feeling better. I liv3d in Suffolk for a good number of years and forgot how steeped in history it is and how beautiful it is, there are some lovely small towns and villages. I often had a few days of holiday with my family in Wroxham. Watch a few hired boats, smash in to the bridge oh happy days and lovely memories. Really nice video. I'm already looking forward to your next one. Take care buddy.

Brilliant walk Simon! Thank you for showing off the beauty of your neck of the woods. If ever you find that you can’t decide on your next walking adventure, you have a standing invitation to come here to Nova Scotia 🇨🇦where I’d be more than thrilled to return the favour, so to speak, and show off MY neck of the woods to you. We have thousands of km’s of world-class hiking trails over virtually every part of the province. Deep back country trails in Kejimkujic and Cape Breton Highlands National Parks to simple day rambles in and around the capital, Halifax. (We have some epic paddling too!) And ALL the fresh seafood and local rum you can handle😉. You even have free room and board. Thanks for taking us along and all the best.

Simon, I am happy to hear you say that you plan to produce more videos, including additional extended walks. I have enjoyed watching every one of your videos I've viewed to date, beginning around 2018, I believe. I found myself amused and a bit nonplussed to discover how much I enjoyed watching content from you, Kent Survival, Wiltshire Man, TA Outdoors, and other YT content producers who portray outdoor adventures in what I would otherwise consider the overpopulated and staid British Isles. I first chanced upon your channel while searching for reviews of equipment, mostly of surplus military origin, which I was considering to outfit my own resumption of wilderness treks as a septuagenarian. A cascade of crises, including COVID-19, wrecked vehicles, and injuries, has interfered and postponed my commencing such adventures. Yet, I find myself heartened to see that Mankind's curiosity and drive to explore, which I believe resides in our DNA, endures even within highly "civilized" lands. My own age and demeanor have led me to appreciate your friendly and relaxed delivery--I'm not a fan of boisterous high-fives and "Yippees" shouted at the wilderness. Steve (Firebox Stove channel) produces similarly relaxing, yet inspiring, content here in the USA. You may consider it a compliment that I include you in such company and say that I sincerely hope that you someday find opportunities to experience backpacking and camping in some of North America's fine wilderness. Were it up to me, I'd accompany you on a week or three-long backpacking trip through some wilderness area in the Cascade or Rocky Mountain ranges here in The West! Happy trails, kindred spirit!

Yet another great video. That ice house brings back memories when we were kids the older lads used to link cycle tyres together like a rope ladder and with rope tied to a tree climbed up and down into it, maybe to escape we younger lads. Whether then or now there is no way on earth you'd catch me down there ! I didn't know how deep it is until you filmed it. Thanks for completing my education of Euston my old home.

Hi Simon, I am remotely enjoying your long walk and am happy that you share that with us. I think, that the blooming yellow field at 17:01 is mustard, as raps is blooming in spring/early summer and mustard is blooming in late fall. Mustard is used as a natural fertilizer, which collects nitrogen from the air and stores it in knots in the roots, where the next generation of plants can benefit from it as a long-time-dispensing fertilizer. I thank you for your great work! Yours, Stefan

Well done and congratulations Simon on completion of such a beautiful looking walking series. Your commentary plus filming has been enjoyable, as has showing your routes on maps. This greatly appreciated. As resident of Brisbane, Australia who has been following your channel from just prior to the pandemic shutdowns, I have found the filmed tranquil scenery and waterways of Britain and Scandinavia spectacular! I look forward to more great content. Hopefully your back filming in the canoe soon. is another multiday minimal equipment survival camp on the drawing board. Thankfully your channel doesn't seem like an: "endless no effort sponsored by this or given that; comfort rather than survival/bushcraft; just in it to make some money or give me freebies" advertisement like how another I used to enjoy but now rarely follow has become. Your sincerity and humility comes across nicely. Cheers mate.

A friend and I once decided to walk from Falkirk to Edinburgh along the Union Canal and it was exhausting. Much more so than the same distance in the hills. I think the completely flat, regular, path made you use the same muscle groups constantly as opposed to a rough mountain track where you're moving more of your frame. Anyhoo your walk looked lovely. 👍

Another excellent watch! As regards future trips, can recommend The Stour Valley Path from Newmarket to Cattawade, though you have canoed alongside a lot of it a couple of years back! The Nar Valley Way, though short from Kings Lynn to Gressenhall is good. Bury-Clare, you would probably do in 1 day, but pleasant. The Lark Valley Path is ok though not that remote and I extended it beyond Mildenhall to irs conclusion at The Great Ouse, beyond Prickwillow. Also enjoyed The Fen Rivers Way from Cambridge to Kings Lynn, the rail stations dotted along the route really help!

You've given me an idea. probably one that will not come to pass, as it involves the wife and Pushbike and wild camping. As you said it forms part of a circular path by using joining footpaths. We could ride up to Cromer on the Weavers Way as it goes through my Village, and then go either east or west on the Norfolk Coastal Path. Brilliant series of videos on the Angles Way which we have walked a couple of section of.
