The spiritual works of mercy include comforting the afflicted, and praying for the living and the dead. There are the two sides, one of which is what does the gospel say to _the man with his back against the wall?_ The liturgy for the dying, what is called anointing the sick, last rites, or extreme unction, is a kindness. My father on his death bed was happy to see the priest who blessed him, forgave his sins, and gave him viaticum. The task doesn't only fall to the clergy. Quite apart from dying comfort can be offered to the ill and the afflicted. I've been on both sides of that transaction... A priest of my acquaintance who was a chaplain at a very large hospital commented: _All men fear death, but those who believe do not suffer as much._ He is a priest, now retired, who worked his vocation with sober attention. As happens death is ever present, of which I have been reminded recently, twice. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord. And let light perpetual shine upon them.

I cannot understand why we in the Anglican Church no longer fully use The Book Of Common Prayer. I do not get the same comfort etc from Common Worship. I use the BCP in my home devotions BUT at Evensong we are not allowed to even use the KJV. I don't really like Common Worship. It is wierd too having "Happy Clappy" services, I feel it's very trite and makes me feel condescended to. What do think?

Having a copy of the Ordinariate's _Divine Worship : Daily Office_ I was interested to learn that much of the language of the Book of Common Prayer was retained. So, to give an example, the Apostles Creed is in the original language. The Psalter is that of Miles Coverdale, but the readings are RSV-2CE. Retaining the original language showed wisdom on the part of the priests of the Ordinariate and of Benedict XVI, which has been thin on the ground for more than a half century, both within and outside the Roman Catholic Church.

I suppppose Article IX would be your best answer to that. IX- OF ORIGINAL OR BIRTH-SIN Original Sin standeth not in the following of Adam, (as the Pelagians do vainly talk), but it is the fault and corruption of the Nature of every man, that naturally is ingendered of the offspring of Adam; whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and is of his own nature inclined to evil, so that the flesh lusteth [concupiscat] always contrary to the spirit; and therefore in every person born into this world, it deserveth God’s wrath and damnation. And this infection of nature doth remain, yea in them that are regenerated; whereby the lust of the flesh, called in the Greek, “Phronema Sarkos”, which some do expound the wisdom, some sensuality, some the affection, some the desire, of the flesh, is not subject to the Law of God.
