Actually, it is a sewn-binding (hence why it has held up) :) and also - the kalendar dates are identical to the 2019 - just smushed into one column. Thanks for the warm 6 month review!! Also, FWIW, the "missing" verses in Psalm 14 occur neither in the Hebrew nor the LXX -- they are a Vulgate oddity -- a back-transposition of NT texts that even Bede felt obliged to apologize for!

@@benjefferies8531 Thank you for your feedback. And for the Breviary. I had thought that it's binding was sewn, but other reviewers said not, and the headbands--beuatiful headnands that match the ribbons--don let one see the signatures. And now, I won't feel like such a heathen with the Psalter.

Okay @benjefferies8531, I broke down and have pre-ordered the second printing. While it won't be my principal office book (my jurisdiction has its own), I decided I needed to pick it up because: 1) It's too gorgeous to pass up. 2) I think I can profitably use it as a more comprehensive Office of Readings than I currently have access to, with the addition of some resources of Patristic readings.

You are preaching to the choir in your criticism of the post Vatican 2 liturgy and aesthetics. My acquaintance with _The Book of Common Prayer_ as mediated by the Anglican Ordinariate's _Divine Worship : Daily Office_ was prompted by the book itself being handsome. The language itself has its charms. The Apostles Creed use of phrases like *the quick and the dead* are more memorable, concise, and pleasing than the work of other translators. This, like the time many years ago that I attended the Vetus Ordo Mass with my father, revealed the truth that the Christian Churches contain treasures that have been tossed aside, inspired by motives that were naive or foolish or malicious. For me the reasonable response is to inquire amongst all these things that are rejected. And here one learns of a birthright was stolen before many of us were born.

Excellent video! I still like the Anglican Breviary best, using the Sermons and Hagiography of the Anglican Breviary along with it. The Saint Bernard Breviary is better than the New Catholic Rite Christian Prayer. I agree. Vatican II is mostly good. There was no call for a New Mass. That was Pope Saint Paul VI listening to one of his advisers that brought about the change. I like the Anglican Ordinariate better than the New Mass, but I have seen a properly celebrated New Mass, in Latin, and one in English, at the Church of Saint Agnes in Saint Paul Minnesota.

Brother Dale, if you wish it, could you speak on the _Office of the Dead?_ The first time I read an Office was in _Divine Worship : Daily Office._ I was struck by the absurdity of having not know that it existed. Indeed though some of the readings there are familiar because I have read them aloud at funerals, the notion of praying on the 3rd, 7th, and 30th day after death was never spoken of, or recommended to me. If you could speak to the subject, and to those customs of the Church that you know of it would be to the good. The change in the custom that the priest at a funeral Mass, or on All Souls Day should wear black rather than white, as a sign that the Church morns with it's children seems almost preverse. Another fruit of the Council...

I recently learned something new and thought of you, Dale. Apparently, the Lutheran Church makes a distinction between "General Absolution" and "Declaration of Grace." Since the Lutheran Church has historically preferred Private Confession, usually the Sunday service did not include a General Absolution (the minister actually forgiving sins, often accompanied by the imposition of hands), but only a Declaration of Grace, which is merely a statement of the Gospel, that God forgives sinners who truly repent (similar to the so-called Absolution written by Cranmer in the Book of Common Prayer). In modern times, Private Confession has fallen out of use, so now most pastors use the General Absolution prior to the laity receiving the Eucharist. In Lutheran service books, the Declaration of Grace and General Absolution are printed side-by-side to be used according to the pastor's discretion. Early Lutheran theologians (including Luther himself) had a strong preference for using the Declaration of Grace in the context of public worship, because there was no way for the minister to examine each layman and know if they possess true repentance and faith. This could only be known through Private Confession, which would be accompanied by absolution with the laying on of hands.

In both the new and the old calendar of the Church, August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

@@dalecaldwell I had to go check before stating it, but the 1662 BCP included the Nativity of the BVM on September 8th as one of its Black Letter Days, with the Visitation (on July 2nd) as well. The Purification of the BVM on February 2nd functioned as the annual Red Letter feast of the Theotokos in the 1662 Calendar, and since saints only got a day on the red letter calendar...

@FatherRobLyons So it does. I had only looked for 'Collects, Epistles, and Gospels' but not at the 'Calendar' or 'Lessons Proper for Holy Days'. Lessons are provided for The Purification and Annunciation, but not for the Visitation, Dormition, or Natiity. Calendars are oddly things. I have been amused/discouraged that in recent times the Feast of the Circumsion has gone through lots of new identities in different post vat-ii calendars. I have a friend who, when entering the Episcopal Church from a Baptist background, saw the Circumcision listed in his first glance at the '28 BCP and thought that Episcopalians still practiced circumcision. Then there is the Purification's becoming the Presentation, although in the East it's the Meeting in the Temple. Is it a Marian Feast or a Feast of Our Lord?

@gitlance Dunno. It ain't quit random, changing to Mode 8 that is often used for Cosin's paraphrase of the Latin hymn. It's the first chant that I dont't remember having seen/heard elsewhere. I always cheat and sing the text to David Hurd's New Plainsong.
