The British Empire may be gone in South Asia, but the last legacy of their colonial rule, the Anglo-Indians still live on; a hybrid of two societies and cultures, with one of the most interesting histories of any group on the planet!
Feel free to let me know your thoughts on Anglo-Indians and the British history of India. I'd especially love to hear if I have any Anglo-Indian viewers or subscribers, as I've only met one Anglo-Indian person (and he was American-born) in my life.

There are Anglo-Indian descendents in the UK as well. Just as Anglo-Indians in India have become "more Indian" over generations, so the British ones have become "more Anglo". There is a TV series in the UK called "who do you think you are?" which traces the ancestry of famous Brits. At least two of them have found Indian ancestors - English Comedian Alistair McGowan discovered that his own father had Anglo-Indian roots and even met living relatives in India (who look nothing like him) whilst Scottish Comedian Billy Connelly discovered that 2 of his ancestors were an Indian woman and a British soldier who married.

No one is running to adopt Chinese culture, economics nor its political system. In case you have never been to China you should know that big business meetings are full of men dressed in European clothing having arrived in European luxury cars. They use European economic paradigms. Young people in China cannot get enough of Western culture.

A very large proportion of East India Company men in India (and all over the empire) were actually Scottish and Irish, it wasn't unusual in any way. It makes sense given that there lay great opportunity for these men who came from the poorer fringes of the British Isles.

Ramathorn: The best place you can look online for records would be Find My Past. They have digitized records of parish returns from British India, which tracked baptisms, marriages, and burials of Europeans and Anglo-Indians. It's estimated that about a third of those records never made it back to London, however, so many might still be in church archives across India. Also check and see what other people might have discovered already in public family trees in Ancestry, My Heritage, and Family Search. Hope this helps!

I don't know the exact story, but here's what I think happened with my family: My great-grandfather Romesh was born in Punjab, and moved to England when he was about 30(?) with the RAF. There he met my great-grandmother, a white British woman, who was only 16 when they got married (yep, we're not proud of it). When my grandfather was 8, in 1948, they moved to India (I'm not sure which part) and lived there for eight years before my grandfather moved back to England when he was 16. He and his brother joined the RAF - his brother was only 15 at the time - and he ended up meeting my Irish grandmother in a dance hall in Ireland in the 50s. My father grew up all over the world as his father was in the RAF, but he went to boarding school in the UK and now my family lives here. My brother and I are only 1/8 Indian, but we have a Punjabi surname and you can tell from looking at us that we are part South Asian :)

They watch these videos hoping they will validate their racist views. Many race videos on the internet act like conspiracy theory "moon landing never happened" videos that try to pit the races against each other in competitions of intelligence, violence, and strength. I like Masaman's videos because they are about an interesting topic: human movement. That's the only aspect of race that interests me: where people have been, and where did they come fro.

My parents were Anglo Indian's (A.I's) and and a VERY good life in India. great jobs, great bungalows & household staff, but we were all born in UK. We were all "fair" kids and were encouraged to try and PASS as European Spanish/Maltese etc. as my Dad in particular wasnt proud of being an A.I: To be fair he did suffer a lot of racial prejudice in the Uk in the 60's. Most if not all of my family (inc myself) married European heritage partners and it's only now that my kids are really keen to find out more of their exotic heritage.

In 1921, Britain took the 91,000 square kilometers of the Palestine Mandate east of the Jordan River, and created Trans-Jordan (later the Arab country of Jordan) as a new Arab protectorate. Jews were barred by law from living or owning property east of the Jordan river, even though that land was over three-fourths of the original Mandate.”The Palestinians (which used to mean Jews in Palestine before Israel became a state) there are statements by leading Arabs buttressing the notion that indeed: Jordan is Palestine and Palestine is Jordan. This is the royal decree and sentiments of two of the kings of Jordan. “Palestine and Jordan are one…” said King Abdullah in 1948.(the Arabs) saw themselves as being part of Palestine/Palestinian. Around 70% of the Jordanian population today, still see themselves as Palestinians. There are photos in Historic records showing Jewish rabbis purchasing land from Arab landowners in the 1920s. 130 people liked this because they are clueless about the Complex history believing the Arab Victim hood. Jewish land purchase's in Palestine the acquisition of land in Palestine by Jews from the 1840s, until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 official Turkish policy until 1856 and in practice until 1867, Ottoman Empire opposed the idea of Jewish self-rule in Palestine, fearing it may lose control of Palestine after losing other territories to various European powers. Palestinian's had been left unable to return to Jordan after the second world war as many refugees had to resettle being used as a buffer zone to help destroy Israel from Jordan.

My great grandmother came to the Caribbean as an INDENTURED servant. I've listened to various intriguing stories about her blue eyes and light complexion which was passed on to several members of the family. I discovered, after doing the research, that she was ANGLO INDIAN.. Her family name is SOOMER, English spelling, and SOUMERE French spelling. In SAINT LUCIA surnames were spelt differently based on the catholic priest who did the baptism. I.e whether he was FRENCH or IRISH origin. I look forward to connecting with family in INDIA in the future.

Hello, some graphics are sort of misleading, and one painting that you showed when you spoke of 1857 was probably based on the surrender of Shah Alam II's surrender to British troops in 1803 (not the mutiny of 1857). Nevertheless, a very interesting video and I learnt a lot of new things. A very good account of Anglo-Indians during the Wars and just before the Indian Independence is given in Ruskin Bond's book 'Lone Fox Dancing'. Bond is arguably India's most loved Anglo-Indian.

When the East India Trading Co. was established in India and had an army of its own, many senior officers were given a "bibigarh"(house of wives), each, for they all travelled extensively. Each Bibigarh had 4-5 young Indian girls as "wives" for the officer, who were mostly pregnant. The officer returned home three-four times a year and the "wives" were happy to see him and entertained him lavishly on company expense accounts. Many Anglo Indians were fathered in this manner and they all considered themselves English. My father was a civil servant working for the Colonial government at Simla and New Delhi. I met many, many Anglo Indians thru his contacts and many came to our home for dinners and special treats made by my mother. On another note, The Company trained hundreds of thousands of Indian as "sepoys" who swore allegiance to the company and later the Crown. Officered by the British, they were used to invade China and countries in Africa.

You are a wealth of knowledge and so accurate in everything you say. I'm anglo-indian, now living in Sydney. My great grandfather was English, enlisted in the army and went to India to fight in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. He never went back to the UK. Instead, he met and married an Indian born Irish Lady. Had 10 kids and my grandfather was the third child. He then married a lady with the surname Rozario. Some say she is Spanish heritage and others say she is Portughese descent. I have never been able to track her background.

It wasn't anything like the analogy he used. The government still supplied the soldiers by emptying prisons and leasing them to the 'company'. The company still operated under the crown and made claims of new territories under the authority of the crown. It was a private enterprise only in that the original capital to fund the building of ships and lease soldiers was raised by private individuals.

The East India Company was a commercial enterprise, which gradually gave up its trading function (except for the opium trade) and relied mainly on taxation for the dividend it sent back to its British shareholders. However the EIC was heavily regulated by the British Parliament, and had a Board of Control imposed on it: the President sat in the British Cabinet from the 18th century. Units of the British Army served in India. There was some interchange between their officers and those of the three Indian Armies. E.G. the Duke of Wellington. The EIC also had its own navy, apart from its armed trading vessels, which had a royal licence to seize foreign ships (so that they would not be regarded as pirates by other navies).

I am half Brit and Indian, I lives here in India now and I don't exactly sure where I belong sometimes. We had learned in history class that Britain stole so many valuable things from India and pretends that they don't. Not because I am British but it appears to me that what happened in the past should stay in the past, there are so many angry Indians to deal with almost everyday, they don't understand how much it could hurt when one call one a thief according to history.

I attended boarding school during my high school years in post British India. I had a lot of Anglo Indian friends and one of my best friends (pals) was one by the name of Tyrone Tallent. Considering there were Anglo Indians from dark complexioned to white he was on the lighter side. He since moved to Australia after we graduated from high school and I lost touch with him. I do know he moved to a place called Seymour and then to Sydney where he worked for Quantas airlines. Nice video on the subject here, thanks Masaman. Cheers!

Well those countries were heavily reliant on the British and were willing to cooperate this is still seen today as Nepalese troops do fight for the British army, the only reason their not shone on others is because they weren’t officially part of the Raj mostly because conquering a county that is entirely made up of mountains is impossible by the standards at the time
