Just who exactly were the “Aryans” and what happened to this enigmatic, yet supremely influential group of people? Although many people today use the term Aryan when referring to their ancestors of ancient history, the label is quite warped and distorted by modern politics, so I encourage you to look at this without any emotional attachment.
Today, we'll be discussing not only how the Aryans have impacted the ethnolinguistic groups of South Asia, but how other migrations, such as the Dravidians, Tibetans, Muslims, Europeans, Africans and others have shaped the landscape of all South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives. Thanks for watching!

We Iranians have always called our country Iran, this term comes from middle Persian "Iran shahr". Iran means the land of the Aryans, historically we Iranians have always called ourselves Aryan. The Parthian Iranians called Iran "Aryan Shahr", meaning Aryan Realm. The Persian Sasanians called Iran "Iran Shahr", also meaning Aryan Realm. We Iranians speak Persian, an Indo-European language. Aryan as an identity: What we can say is that only the Iranians have continuously identified themselves with the term Aryan (Modern Persian Ir, as in the Gen. Pl. Ir-an, "belonging to the Ir (Aryans)"). Aryan as a language family: This is the way in which most scientific books classify Aryan, i.e. as a group of people who speak Aryan languages. In this sense, you can start from Ossetia and the Iranians in Turkey and Iraq and go all the way down to India and up to Tajiks in Central Asia. All those people would be grouped as Aryans. We Iranians love our Tajik brothers and sisters in Central Asia, they are Iranian and they speak Persian. Actually the term Iranian is derived from Aryan. The Avesta clearly uses airya/airyan as an ethnic name (Vd. 1; Yt. 13.143-44, etc.), where it appears in expressions such as airyāfi; daiŋˊhāvō "Iranian lands, peoples", airyō.šayanəm "land inhabited by Iranians". In Armenian sources, the Parthians, Medes and Persians are collectively referred to as Aryans. Eudemus of Rhodes apud Damascius (Dubitationes et solutiones in Platonis Parmenidem 125 bis) refers to "the Magi and all those of Iranian (áreion) lineage". All this evidence shows that the name arya "Iranian" was a collective definition, denoting peoples (Geiger, pp. 167 f.; Schmitt, 1978, p. 31) who were aware of belonging to the one ethnic stock, speaking a common language, and having a religious tradition. In modern Iranian languages, the original self-identifier lives on in ethnic names like "Alans" and "Iron".Similarly, the name of Iran is the Persian word for land of the Aryans. And the word is used today as well. The Shah of Iran was also called Aryamehr ("Light of the Aryans").
@StateiraCyrus
@StateiraCyrus 3 жыл бұрын
Also, ancient descriptions of Aryans describe them as dark-haired (brown or black) and dark-eyed (brown or sometimes green) with light skin. Similarly, recent genetic studies about the proto-Indo-Europeans (Yamnaya people from the Pontic steppe) showed that they match these descriptions : The genetic basis of a number of physical features of the Yamnaya people were ascertained by the ancient DNA studies conducted by Haak et al. (2015), Wilde et al. (2014) and Mathieson et al. (2015): they were genetically tall (phenotypic height is determined by both genetics and environmental factors), overwhelmingly dark-eyed (brown), dark-haired and had a skin colour that was moderately light, though somewhat darker than that of the average modern European. Interestingly, several recent linguists and geneticists, such as Reich et al. 2018, Wang et al. 2018, Kristiansen 2018,… suggest that the proto-Indo-European Yamnaya may have had a predecessor in modern-day Iran (likely northern Iran), where "proto-proto-Indo-European" was spoken. → This gives the meaning of Iran a much more heavy meaning. From the Darius the Great's Inscription in Naqshe-e-Rostam in Iran/Persia : " I am Darius, the great king, the king of kings The king of many countries and many people The king of this expansive land, The son of Wishtaspa of Achaemenid, Persian, the son of a Persian, 'Aryan', from the Aryan race "

@@koolar1528 No, we have never had Indian culture in Iran/Persia, and the Indians have never ruled Iran, no Indian king has ruled Iran, and there have been no Indian tribes in Iran. Aso, Persian and Indian cultures are different. And Avestan is not is a daughter language of Sanskrit, Avestan is an Iranian language. And both Avestan and Sanskrit are a branch of the Indo-Iranian languages within the Indo-European family. Its immediate ancestor was the Proto-Iranian language, a sister language to the Proto-Indo-Aryan language, with both having developed from the earlier Proto-Indo-Iranian. As such, Old Avestan is quite close in grammar and lexicon to Vedic Sanskrit, the oldest preserved Indo-Aryan language.

It doesn't matter, sintashta culture is what gave a group of pastoral farmers the identity of Aryans. Today that culture is inscribed in the vedas. So if u don't know the basic knowledge of the vedas, u simply is not an aryan. Vedas contain social, mathematical, philosophical, religious identity of the Aryans. As per sanskrit literature, Arya = noble man, Aryan = Of noble blood. People included were nobles/royals from Iran, Armenia, Afghan, Uzbek, Pakistan, Present north India, Kazakh, Turkmenistan, and surrounding areas. Term was mostly used like present day “Sir” as a form of respect.
@prxnv
@prxnv 11 ай бұрын
no that isn't what it means... arya means "kinsman" and is derived from proto indo european "heryo"... it's cognates are hero aristocrat and eros in the west. For example in the rigveda, whenever "arya" is used, it's to refer to bharata (the clan that composed the veda), dasyu to the other 6 closely related sister tribes, whereas mleccha refers to meluha (indus valley people) and rakshasa to aboriginals. Over time, because bharata tribesmen became the nobility and administrative class (Brahmins and Kayasthas later on) of the subsequent settled civilizations and feudal societies of northern india, arya became synonymous with nobility. By the late vedic period, Uzbek Kazakh and Turkmen were nowhere near Central Asia, and people like Afghans Armenians and Iranians were considered Dasyu and looked down upon by the arya descendants inside India (exceptions of asvakans gandharans and dardics)

No, it was mostly and ethnic designator for the Aryans who conquered and ruled over India. Due to Aryans making up the vast majority of the nobility for such a long time, their ethnic name became the word for Nobleman. Like how Slave became the generic word for enslaved people because the most prominent group being enslaved were Slavs from eastern Europe. The original Aryans were Iranians, and they have proof going back thousands of years of them calling themselves Aryans as a people, not a title

Whatever in sanskrit is aryan's making.. they were invaders with horses came to north india.. they created sanskrit, vedic system, caste system by making themselves as brahmins of the highest hierarchy.. the true indigenous ppl are the dravidians(tamils) likely originated from harappa civilisation at the lost river of sarawathy.. there is even an ancient tamil city of Harappa in pakistan.. u guys can google and see.. but indian government is covering up because mostly are aryans and they will nvr acknowledge tamil as the oldest spoken language in the world.. soon links to indus pictograph are being decrypted using spoken Tamil.. incredible breakthrough.. that would bring back glory to Tamils whom were suppressed by the aryans for centuries till today.. so dont believe onto whatever the aryans made.. they are the crook brahmins plundered india's wealth and followed by british.. the original proto-shiva seal found in harappa civilisation in a meditative state can be directly linked to south india... incredibly the harappa civilisation emphasised on drainage system, fertility, equility, animal rights, self and social well being plus also meditation.. all these with emphasise to water can be seen in our Tamil culture.. the aryan's are from mesopotamian blood where they believed in gods, kings, pyramids, zigurats, temples, hierarchy totally different from harappa civilisation where there was not even weapons or war.. that is the ultimate shiva's teaching brought over by the dravidians to south india.. aryan mixed and destroyed most of the authentic Tamil teachings.. by right dravidians dont even pray during their civilisation, they only meditate because they have already came to realisation thousands of years ago.. om namah shivaya

People like u are the real reason many still deny Aryan migration theory because ur a tamil fascist who distorts basic scientific findings for ur personal agenda.

Agreed the culture of North Indians is similar to that of Eastern Europeans. The North Indians are very different to southern ones. It would make sense as the Persian Empire was also invaded by Romans many times until Persias fall. Unfortunately we don’t know everything since any empire that invaded foreign lands like the Mongols and English would burn the libraries and documents with all this information smh

I come from Assam province in Northeast India. Here ethnicities are even far more complex. This is a place where Indo Aryan and East Asian populations intermixed. In my own family, there are people who can pass off as a Thai or Shan, and also people who can pass off as an Iranian. There is a theory in our family that we were originally residents of Peshawar region in present day Pakistan in around 800-900AD, but with Islamic conquest, my ancestors fled east into the Gangetic plains and further into the Brahmaputra valley. While from my mother’s side, a prince of Yunnan province of China along with a few thousand followers came west across the mountains and settled in Brahmaputra valley. He and his descendants ruled the region from 1226 AD to 1826 AD. It was the most glorious period of our history. Unlike rest of India, Assam does not have a rigid caste system. There has been a lot of intermixing and hence if you look closely you’ll find all kind of traces in an Assamese DNA.

I (Victoria Miroshnik) have talked about this in chapter 2 of our book (in collaboration with Dipak Basu) named Ethics, Morality, and Business to be published by Palgrave-Macmillan. I gave photos of some artifacts from the Kola district in Siberia about the ruins of a civilization that used to exist in Siberia before the last ice age. Tilak wrote in his books about the origin of the Aryans in Siberia, in Uttara Kuru, we think that was before the last Ice Age. When that civilization was ruined because of the Ice Age, the Aryans moved to India. After the Ice Age, the Aryans went back to Siberia ( Arkheim near Cheliabinsk in Sintastra-Petrovska valley).

I also often wonder about another phenomena: there are beautiful girls in every ethnic group but I find Indo-Iranian women not jus pretty, I find them breathtaking gorgeous! Great video! It would be very difficult to get any data but have you done any research or do you have any knowledge of the people of North Sentinel Island and the tribal people of the Andaman Islands? My theory is that the original "Dravidians" would have resembled them somewhat and that our current ideas are very shaped by the events of the last 500 years or so.
@prxnv
@prxnv 11 ай бұрын
The "Dravidians" originally came from western eurasia, and could've been related to the ancient Elamites (they have the same etymological root word for "father", and usually tribes that have the same word for father tend to be related linguistically). They also tend to have caucasoid skull shape, whereas the andamanese natives have the australoid skull shape, so that implies that the two races have very different origins. The dravidians also were agro-pastoralists and have been shown to be related to brahui speakers in baluchistan so its very likely that the dravidians and indus valley people (meluha in elamite/sumerian, they were the original mlecchas in rigveda) were related and both came from the west. aboriginals have been in india MUCH befre dravidian. so u may ask why do dravidians have dark skin and aboriginal like facial feaures? well thats simply cuz living in high uv exposure and very humid areas makes ur skin darker and nose wider over many many generations. Genetic affinity is tainted by this kind of stuff which is why genotype analysis isn't enough to tell the origins of dravidians.

Aryan is not a race but an adjective which comes from the Sanskrit word “Arya” which means Noble that’s why India was also called “Aryavarta” which means land of the nobles. It was the German Indologists who came up with fictional Aryan invasion theory to get claim on the rich Sanskrit heritage of Ancient India after noticing similarities between their languages with Sanskrit. When in reality the knowledge and science went from India to the Europe and influenced the languages and sciences there. But Ofcourse this would have meant accepting that India was far more advanced than the European countries in the ancient times so they distorted the history and made a story of Aryan people coming to India and displacing the native Dravadians here creating a North Indian South India divide which still exists to this date. Genetic studies have discarded this theory and also proved that people from South of India and from the North have exactly the same genetic ancestry.

I also don't have enough knowledge about it to comment this for surety but this is what I know from the scientific articles I read. It is a great loss to our cultural heritage that we will never know what the original Vedda language was. We could try to reconstruct it by studying the Andamanese languages, which I suppose are the closest to what the "aboriginal" Veddas spoke. But even if we did that, I suppose the modern Veddas would not be willing to speak it, because that would alienate them from the "mainstream" Indians with whom they have been trying to integrate. While ideally every nation should have its own language (I even would like to see Americans have a separate Germanic language, since not all of us are English), I realize how impractical that would be.
@barcak1912
@barcak1912 4 жыл бұрын
@@SeasideDetective2 some of your information are wrong, Vedda language is not related to Andamanese languages. Andamanese languagea are more related to Austronesian and west Papuan languages. Vedda language is more related to Sinhala, and languages in the mainland India with similarity in syntax, use of retroflex consonants and many more but they still retain their very unique features. Just another fascinating fact, there is another language in South Asia which is very different and unique, it's called Nihali and is spoken somewhere in central India. Search for it, it's very interesting.
@SeasideDetective2
@SeasideDetective2 4 жыл бұрын
@@barcak1912 When I say "the Vedda language," I don't mean the language they actually speak, but their ABORIGINAL language, which we will never know. I imagine if the Vedda ever embarked on a hardcore nationalist crusade and demanded their "own" separate language, they'd probably create a new one using one of the Andamanese languages as a base, if only to advertise their Adivasi and non-Aryan and non-Dravidian heritage. There are some English-speaking Americans who have proposed making American English a separate language by either removing all the French and Latin words transmitted by British English and replacing them with Germanic coinages or just changing the spelling of American English words so that the British wouldn't recognize them. So the notion is not completely far-fetched.
@barcak1912
@barcak1912 4 жыл бұрын
@@SeasideDetective2 yes that's what I'm saying, Vedda language is not completely mixed, many elements of their language have still survived and *that* are not related to Andamanese or Ongan, so why use it as a base? The original Vedda components are unique to itself, but in terms of linguistic features, are more related to other South Asian languages and not Andamnese.

The divide in development is purely due to post colonial regressive politics. While the south gave rise to more egalitarian politics, the North played caste politics, which to this day divides the groups drastically. For instance, governments in Kerala and Tamil Nadu pushed for more education. This is purely due to the demographics. These states have predominantly lower caste citizens and therefore always voted for nativist parties that promoted social improvements. In turn, education helped develop a better society. Well this is my take. There may be other reasons too. Because historically I am not sure if there has been a period where such a huge developmental division has existed between the northern and southern kingdoms.

If at all you are trying to link some connection to the Indian Peninsular where the 3 oceans meet at the bottom of it ( south ) ... the tra has got no basis to this as well, cuz Peninsular is known as Jambudvipa ( Jambu is the name of an Ancient Tree which grew in the Indian subcontinent and Dvipa has a couple of meanings ( Land surrounded by water on 3 sides ( peninsular)/continent. Not worthless but imperfect. With Adam’s disobedience to God, he lost his perfect everlasting life. Being his descendants, we have inherited his imperfections, and are dying. But aren’t you doing yr best to make life worthwhile, thus having some joy? Do you know who wants you to feel worthless?

You're a Dravidian by phenotype if that's your picture. Plus, Indians can't be Aryan by blood. You clearly don't understand the basic genetics discussed here.

In eastern India, Bengali brahmins, particularly of "Rarhi" group has the highest Indo-Aryan blood. "Rarhis" came from Kannauj only in 13th century. These are surnames like Mukherjee, Banerjee, Chatterjee, Ganguly. It is not uncommon to have green/grey/blue eyes among pureblood "Rarhis". Certain families have lost this trait due to marriage between local brahmin and other castes, especially in the village areas where transportation is poor, so marriage is arranged locally.

Magnificent video. Small request though, I'm a syriac Christian from Kerala (South India). I might be asking too much, but is it possible to make a video on us? I know that we are a controversial group within India, especially among the RW. But, i would like the world to know a little more about us. It sure is an interesting topic, to us indic Christians anyway.
