The first Anglo-Saxon Queens of England before the Norman conquest are shrouded in the mists of history. Their stories read like fairytales and in fact one of them inspired the evil stepmother. The Anglo-Saxon Queen Consorts were:
Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury
Æthelflæd of Damerham
Ælfgifu
Ælfthryth of Devon
Ælfgifu of York
Emma of Normandy
Ealdgyth
Edith of Wessex
Ealdgyth of Mercia
Watch the whole series now: / lindsayholiday
The lives of the many Kings and handful of Queens Regnant who have held dominion over the kingdom of England, and later the United Kingdom take center stage in history. But the lives of their spouses and mothers are often relegated to the wings. In this series we will learn the stories of the many Queens Consort and the handful of male consorts who have been at the monarchs’ sides. Through love, hate, adultery and sometimes murder these women and men have played vital roles in the history of England.
I make mini documentaries about women's history and royal history:
Queens of the World: • Queen Marie Antoinette...
A History of... • A History of Childbirt...
Royal History: • A History of Royal Inc...
LGBT Royals: • LGBTQ Royals of the World

I find the portraits of the first monarchs fascinating. They may look like simple drawings compared to the fancy paintings of the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th century but each has its unique characteristics.

Queens and Consorts are also interesting as monarchs. I'm looking foward to the consorts from the Plantagenets to the War of the Roses. There are lots of strong and colorful women in the middle ages. Please make a video in the Royalty 101 about the powers that can a british monarch wields from the middle ages to present period.

Exactly what I used to wonder! I mean just think about Henry VIII making a whole issue about Catherine of Aragorn being a virgin or not when they married, (ofcourse the whole issue of her being his brother's widow) or beheading Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard for supposed adultry. Considering so many of these women were widowed, had kids with other men or pre marital or extra marital affairs and still became queens and this was way before the Tudor era.

What I like most about the amount of Ælfgifu's is that it's not the same as when a name is reused several times over for kings (like how there's 8 king Henry's or 8 king Edward's) where they may have been named after a previous king or took on that name upon coronation, but instead there were just that many women named Ælfgifu. Or of course it could mean being named Ælfgifu guaranteed you'd be married to an English king, but no one can REALLY disprove that. Probably.

The mysterious wife of Sweyn Forkbeard and mother of Canute the Great, mentioned in the video as sometimes identified with the legendary Sigrid the Haughty, was likely a Polish princess, daughter of Mieszko I and sister of Bolesław I the Brave (the first two rulers of Poland). We don't know her name, but it is theorised that it might have been Świętosława. One contemporary source from England mentions Canute's sister named "Santslaue", which looks like an attempt of some poor Anglo-Saxon scribe to write that Slavic name, which she possibly got after her mother.

Just a small correction in terms of the context. Harold Godwinson was an elected sovereign and didn't "seize the crown". Edgar the Atheling was the hereditary heir and was only elected after Harold's death. Prospective sovereigns of the period needed to be approved by the Witenagemot. William the Bastard was eventually approved by the Witenagemot under obvious duress but nonetheless, this did legally legitimize his reign under English law of the period. Aside from that, fantastic video. Very much looking forward to the rest of the series!

I am rather impressed that I saw only one comment about Eadwig. I believe there was something dark behind his death. As for Aelfgifu, she was a woman who made a name for herself, yet in romantic era literature, she was portrayed as a helpless woman who was branded and murdered by the hands of the church. What I also noticed is that she shares the name of Eadwig's mother, who died when he was four. Maybe she reminded him about her? I often fantasize about their relationship. I often wonder if modern writers tackle the topic of both of them. I theorized his death, and now, I'm trying to find out who Aelfgifu was. She was the daughter of the abbess of Shaftesbury of course, but what else? She surely knew Eadwig because she was the daughter of the head of abbey nuns, Dunstan and Oda knew Aethelgifu (her mother), it'd make sense since Aethelgifu had blood ties to the royal family (her being a descendant of Alfred the Great and all). Maybe they were childhood friends, but an event caused them to not see each other until the famed coronation where she and her mother were spotted by Eadwig, then the rest of the tale of the coronation played out? I'm not sure if they did have a threesome, and his attention was focused on Aelfgifu? I remember reading about the mother wanting Aelfgifu and Eadwig to get to know each other more, so my theory of them knowing each other before the coronation is probably possible. I know there is more to her that meets the eye, and I'm trying my hardest to get to the bottom of her tale. I often think to myself "did they even go to bed? What if they did something less sexual?". I often use my knowledge of Aethelgifu being an abbess to add the possible fact that Aelfgifu's knowledge on sexual matters was limited. While she did know about it, she probably did not know the details. Maybe it was a romantic conversation rather than just sex? I'm still trying to figure this out, feel free to talk about it with me if you know more. Thanks for listening to my rambling.

DAYUM!!! I’m 72 years old & I haven’t given the subject a plausible thought in YEARS, so just imagine my shock when the Battle of Hastings was mentioned & I thought “1066” just prior to the year actually being confirmed in the video! I guess that I’m not quite as senile as I thought, lolololol!

Could we get some captions on these? You have a lovely soft voice, but I'm hard of hearing and struggle to hear airy voices, even with my volume all the way up. Reading along would be super helpful! Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication to your videos!! They tickle my history nerd nerve ❤️

Shout out to the people who saw the whole series when it was accidentally released early. Tell me how far you got before it was hidden again. I was on Henrietta Marie when it was hidden.

I'm not from the UK and I never really looked up the history of distant English royalty (or learnt about Anglo-Saxon royalty in school), so this is the first time I'm hearing of "Ælfgifu, the first official queen of England" - or any of these other Anglo-Saxon royals - in my life. Thanks for the video, I learnt something new today! Also love the fairytale-esque names, doesn't even feel like real history tbh (though I do like history).

I just found your channel and subscribed. I absolutely love it! I hope I don't offend, as it truly is not my intent, but Ælfgifu is pronounced more like Alviva or Elviva. In Anglo-Saxon, the letter "f" was used as both f and v. It was pronounced as a v if it was not the first letter in the word. G was pronounced like a y, and u, at the end of a word, was a short "a" sound. The sound made by the letter Æsc (ash) doesn't really exist in modern English, but it's somewhere in between "ah" and "eh" hence the interchangeable a and e sounds when romanizing such names. Again, I hope I don't come off as rude or condescending. I love this video, all of the subject matter you cover, and the research you've put in. There's not near enough interesting material on pre-Norman conquest England to suit me, so words cannot fully express how much I love this.

Actually it's been around since 600bce in Roman from the Etruscan and it continued until the mid 19th century that became a modern roman to this very day.
