The Anniversary Party (2001)

Recently uncoupled couple Joe (Allan Cumming) and Sally (Jennifer Jason Leigh) celebrate their anniversary with a group of friends in this dark, Independent Spirit Award-nominated drama (also written and directed by Cumming and Leigh). When Judy (Parker Posey), Cal (Kevin Kline), Sky (Gwyneth Paltrow) and assorted spouses and friends come over, it only takes a few cocktails and a load of ecstasy before the situation careens out of control.

I bought this on dvd when it first came out because I was a massive Parker Posey fan, at first I hated it but over the years it has grown on me and now that I'm close to middle age I realize how brilliant it is.

The Anniversary Party is my all time favorite film. I first watched it for Alan Cumming, being a big fan of his films, especially the ones he writes. But I came to love the whole damn thing!!!! And to find out it had alot of improv and it was made on a small budget with a bunch of Alan's and Jennifer's friends, made it even better! Sure, this is no Hollywood blockbuster, but thats why I love it so much. Rich in soul, made from the heart, and personally very relatable. I could watch this group of friends chat all night, they all have an interesting story to tell. Fun fact: The actors in the "toast to sally and joe" scene created their own toasts. Alan and Jennifer had no idea what they were going to do until they rolled the cameras! The ones you see were the best out of the bunch. Now THAT is creative collaboration at its finest! A delight for an actor like I to watch.

I love the uphill scene, after the drugs. Two characters goes uphill and have an intimate chat. I love the city lights in the background.

The trailer is trash, this film was ahead of the trailer editing conventions of the time if they cut one for it now it would be totally different. If you like shows like Easy or High Maintenance you will like this. This film is perfectly acted.
