I like how the luxury community mocks people for buying Gucci, yet their quality is miles better than Chanel. I almost bought in to Chanel’s ‘higher echelon’ but after seeing countless videos by you and Super Dacob, i opted out in getting anything Chanel. i bought my double flap and kept her in a bag for several months because i wanted to preserve it and did not have an occasion to wear it. Recently, i unboxed and noticed the poor quality stitching. I went to the store manager and he was very rude, refused to cooperate. Now my bag is sent to Chanel artisants for inspection. The customer services had to type comments and look - base don what they wrote, it does not sounds like a healthy bag for £9k. I will be hearing from them in 4 weeks time.

@@RominaRoseMay Chanel Reraip centre confirmed the "flaw" is within the acceptable range since the bag is hand made. However, London Team in Harrods overwrote decision and offered to swap the bag. I am yet to see the bag in person and see what they will give me! What a drama!

@@kaledonia1983 Yes. I bought last years caviar Boy saddle bag and it does look fine. I would not order special leathers from them anymore. Their special leathers are gorgeous. Just not practical for everyday wear and tear. To make a bag like the 22 in a metallic leather is just stupid. Metallic leather is very prone to wearing. Always. Even if it is clear coated. Add a chain strap that will rub against the leather and a soft unstructured style where the leather will bend and fold over and over again will only cause rapid problems. And apparently it did. And to have terrible working conditions at their price point is appalling.

My husband bought a pair of designer dress pants 25 years ago and they are still in perfect condition. Luxury items should last a lifetime. People should protest Chanel already. I keep hearing complains about the quality and yet they continue buying it. Chanel was never on my wish list, same for Hermes. I just do not like their bags designs and seriously do not understand why are they so popular. I prefer buying luxury items that are less on social media but higher quality such as Bvlgari, Marni, Margiela, Tory Burch, Off white and etc I also love Rebecca Minkoff, the two bags I am using for more than 7 years on daily basis and they are still in mint conditions.

My bestie bought Chanel sunglasses last year with a chain attached to it, really pretty: leather through the links, pearls, double Cs, you get the idea. Round about € 1,400 I think. After wearing it twice(!) a pearl AND one of the double Cs dropped off the chain. And I'm like: what the.....?! She returned it and got her money back but the lesson learned is: Don't buy Chanel. I bought my first Chanel seasonal bag last year September there was an issue with the shoulder strap and the SA right away said she will order me another one direct from Paris. I received the new bag perfect condition. I too questioned the SA on how could such an flaw could pass quality inspection. She was kind to say she could not answer but apologize. Now after hearing the news I now understand why quality is an issue. This is clearly a human rights issue the French government should look into this. Here in Canada I paid 6300 for a season flap bag a lot of money. So I would expect the workers to be treated like royalty for creating such beautiful pieces.

When I worked for LVMH I was 'encouraged' to see my team (over 25 people) as pawns, to make them constantly feel that they could 'do better', not to encourage them etc. I ignored all that and gave them a great working environment, when stress arrived before the shows I stopped everyone and we had a party for an hour, then back to work. If an employee was feeling low or sad I gave them shopping or movie time to boost their morale. I almost had no-one calling in sick but many of the other teams had many sick days. We had fun but we worked hard and I was often 12 hours a day at the office to make everything go well and would go in six or seven days a week. I was constantly battling with HR over my unwillingness to 'obey' their stupid rules. I even worked briefly for Vuitton but the conditions were terrible. I still have an ex assistant who works there and she cries at how much worse her job is to what it was with me.

Yes it does take one bad boss to make your life hell. I left my two last good jobs because of narcissistic team mates who made work feel like work and not pleasure anymore. Both were bitter people who needed to put others down to feel good about themselves. Instead of battling or complaining I just left. There are lots of good jobs for good people. I feel some of the responsibility for Chanel becoming just another fast fashion brand is because of Karl Lagerfeld. He was so prolific with his creativity and his designs were so popular that the owners of Chanel exploited everything he did. He was a gushing tap of gold for them. So greed got the better of their discrimination and led them too far from the original ethos of Coco Chanel. I wonder if things might have been different if somebody at the top of the company could have put the brakes on a little bit. I don 't feel the house of Yves St. Laurent fell into this trap while Yves St. Laurent was still alive.

Karl Lagerfeld brand used to have decent quality too. Since he passed away the quality is gone completely. I bought a bag from 2019 and the leather is still in good condition. However I bought a wallet in 2021 and my oh my, the leather color faded in 3 months. Í don’t know what happen but I guess it was made of plastic not PU leather even. The brand is dead to me now. And it goes on sale almost all year round. You can buy a bag with a price of a zara jacket (80€) I have a zara bag that is half the price of my KL wallet and still holds on well after 2 years of daily use. I changed from wearing designer bags to zara bag after this incident. My wallet is happy and I’m satisfied 😂❤

The right thing to do is to stop buying Chanel. I became disillusioned with the brand after having an issue with my Brown 22 Bag (second season release) and they would not do anything to help me since 1) I was outside the 14 Day Return window (I didn’t use the bag until 2 months after purchase due to giving birth) and 2) The quality manager declared it was normal wear & tear - for the leather to start wearing away like in the pictures you showed. One time use 🤯 I can understand why people got mad at you and Super Dacob for exposing the 22 Bay quality issues. Sad, but true. People don’t want to think about how someone else is being exploited for their own gain. Luxury buyers may also think that by spending this amount of money, surely the workers must be properly-compensated and have safe working conditions. But no, not in Chanel’s case, at least not with their handbags. I used to think I could buy these bags to enjoy and pass down to my children. But I think I’m better off selling my 19s and 22 Bag acquired during the pandemic and taking my money (and losses) elsewhere - to Hermès, Loewe, and anyone else using actual leather on their bags.

Romina, thank you for this. You’re a noble person. I watch KZbin videos where Chanel bags are shown - both from inside stores and from outside stores through the windows. I was shocked that I could see the poor quality (the sheen of the leather not being right, the stitching not highlighting any suppleness of the leather, a certain stiffness apparent where there should be none, etc.). Me and my friends fr Malaysia are not happy w Chanel bag qualities . Customer service is also bad when items has faults and the staff behave like it’s customers fault for causing the faults . Chanel will even keep your items for many mths just for small repairs and the repair is a bad job. Lots of money is charged to customer for small repairs that’s even not customers faults . The cases are , Leather chain straps disintegrate on the bags when it’s kept in closets , stitchings come apart at the straps when holding up the body of the bag w items inside , zippers on nylon waist bag pouches becomes faulty after some wear 😢 LV won’t dare treat their customers like this when they want repairs / refunds .

It's worst than fast fashion because if you buy something from Shein, you can always return it. Honestly, it's a known fact that Chanel produces bags in sweatshops like the ones in Prato. And when I saw my first boutique piece, I was like---yah it's not far off from the fakes. I think we can't discount the superiority filled dopamine response when you spend that much on anything. I tried to buy a Chanel bag last year ,London had no stock of what I was looking for , in April I was in Paris both boutiques had no stock , went to Italy in May , nothing , no stock , back in London again no stock , I decided I don't want to proceed with buying something that has no good value , for real I am over it

I don't know how many people know this but a lot of the italian factories have been purchased by the chinese. So it if can be done there if can happen I would think in France. The name of the game is money and chanel knows people will continue to buy their products.

This is obiously terrible, but I dont think is the main cause of all the defects. Cheap materials, are in my opinion, the easiest explanation on all the quality issues. I live in a town that is mainly focus on leather goods, and these are the kind of things you see in poor quality materials… but a bag like that in here costs like 25 dollars 😅 not thousands

I can explain this. Either they use an extremely slim slice of lambskin (full grain is the whole skin taken from the lamb. Hermes use full grain. The full grain can be slices into many slices like a cheese. The thinner slice the more fragile and break. The second alternative is that they mix milled lambskin fibers with glue and then spray the bay with a spray that will make it look like leather. It will peel off the bag and leave a suede like surface. No bag that is not full grain is luxury quality in my opinion. The workers being abused doesn’t cause these leather quality issues. It’s Chanel wanting to save money sacrificing quality. It’s best not to have too many bags. But one and use it every day. If it breaks within 3 years you can get your money back with the support of European consumer laws. If you buy a bag and only use it once in a while you’ll never know what quality it is before it’s to late to get your money back.

The "rebuttals" from the bosses to the article are the nail in the coffin. The workers were making very serious claims and any boss could've flat out denied it, saying "yes, while employees stay on the X floor where their station, they are free to move around that area without supervision" or "yes, everyone is supervised in that we have cameras in all the main areas like any job, but no, we're not breathing down their necks." However, they really tiptoed with their answers and didn't FLAT OUT deny anything. And then there's that Ukraine comment. Yea, I'm sorry but Chanel really only cares about $$$ and it's absolutely not worth anymore. Bags like YSL get critiques in function, like maybe a flap being too difficult to open, but I barely ever see any criticisms about their quality. There are brands still try. Chanel doesn't

I agree. I sold my 22s caramel mini (yes, I know), because the leather felt very dry and unconditioned, almost like it would start cracking and peeling after a few wears. The leather quality is sooo important! But yes, it’s now becoming common knowledge that many Chanel staff are treated poorly… pls be kind to your SA’s!

I don't know about Chanel, but LV does not outsource to China, never has. They have stated this repeatedly because in China, with its disregard for intellectual property rights, they cannot guarantee production chains.

Honestly the recent quality of their bags make me think it’s made in China.. I’m surprised it’s still made in France. I find the classic flap still acceptable quality but everything else is really mediocre. But also hardware is disappointing. They would tell you it’s made to look aged, but to me it’s a poor excuse for just not even bothering to try anymore.

I just purchased my first Chanel lambskin mini flap last week and now I’m a bit scared since I haven’t carried it yet. I previously owned two Chanel WOCs- one from 2019 and another from 2022. I have over 200 vintage bags (I did have a LOT more) collected when no one wanted 'vintage' as it was 'old' and 'used'. I have some Gucci's and one lovely Kelly type bag in lizard with gold locks that I paid pennies for. I have woven bags, embroidered bags, some old Gucci and Dior but they are in great condition ofter sometimes 60 to 80 years, having been used and worn and the leather stands up to all that. I recently bought a burgundy monogram Dior bag from the 60's, impecable. They don't make them like they used to that's for sure.

Romina, you and others posting legitimate concerns with Chanel's quality control are not ruining its reputation. Chanel are doing that themselves by taking an eye off the ball. You are not being unfair about it and Chanel would do well to heed the issues and investigate their manufacturing process. Every luxury brand uses 3rd party manufacturers. From leather tanners in Italy exploiting migrant workers, to the metal factories. The supply chain is corrupt and at odds with the idea of luxury. When these stories appear, the brands are distanced enough not to take responsibility and blame the third parties. From Chanel to Primark, this is accepted practice.
