I'm still using my Fairphone 2. An understated advantage is that the ability to repair something increases effective uptime. When my screen was broken but still usable, I swapped it out in a minute once I had the part - I didn't have to send it in for service or leave it anywhere.

I have the Fairphone 3. I am currently thinking about getting the Fairphone 4, but i'm on the edge because the 3 still works great. I would like to have the newer components and 5G, but i don't wanna "waste" the perfectly good phone i already have.

Awesome! I got the FP2 on pre-order when it came out, but when the FP3 dropped I had to get it, performance just wasn't up to what I needed anymore :/ still running the FP3 though and hope to use it for a long time still as well.

When my iPhone dies I’m getting a fairphone, and when my dell laptop dies I’m getting a framework. I love this concept. Additionally, I might not feel quite so compelled to put a fairphone in a massive case and worry about it constantly, since I know if something breaks it’s not a huge deal to fix it.

My iPhone died 1,5 month ago and I went for a Fairphone 4. I was really apprehending going back to Android after years on iOS. I'm not gonna lie, there are couple of features I slightly miss from iOS, like getting notifications when events are added of updated in shared calendars, but all in all, I am really happy with the move.

Honestly I think it makes more business sense as well. If you are required to buy a brand new device if it gets too old or something happens to yours, you are able to each time decide what new device you want where as with these you can modify the phone how you want throughout its use making it last longer as well as be more inclined to stay with that device or company.

This is the device the _old_ “don’t be evil” Google would’ve and could’ve made. This is what the Pixel series phones SHOULD be. I have a feeling a company with the resources of El Goog could solve some of the drawbacks, like water resistance, and also give you faster SOC options. Actually, didn’t they at one point have a concept modular phone? Whatever happened to that?

I've been told by a technician in a phone repair shop that the water resistance of pixel 3 will only last for a couple of months. (This shop is where pixel's official website suggested so I believe that their words are at least trust worthy.) I really doubt whether it's possible to make a phone with this level of modularity while maintaining the ip68 water resistance.

I have gained a lot of respect for Linus lately. I learned a lot in the NCIX and the early LMG days about building and working on my first build, and definitely owe a lot to getting me started over a decade ago. I always wanted a Fairphone 2, but didn’t buy it because “The most sustainable phone is the one you already own”. When my old phone broke, the Fairphone 3 came out, so I bought that. It’s awesome! Later they also released better camera modules which made it possible to upgrade just the camera while keeping the rest of the phone :) Also, I think buying the Fairphone 3 (+) is still a legit option. No 5G, but you will have a headphone jack ;)

Clarification to the "watertightness": It is very water "resistant", but not "waterprof". The "IP 54"-rating means: First digit is rating for dust and objects. It says "5" and that means "Dust protected". Second didget is rating for water intrusion. Is says "4" and means it can handle water splashes from all angles, but you can't dip it in water.

I had my LG V20 for 4 years and still working. I'm not going easy on my devices. It's not water rated at ALL and has a removable battery: the only part bothering me is the usb type C connector not making good contact after all those years, that's all (probably because I'm working in potting soil everyday :D ). Crazy what a good phone case, a screen protector and a pocket can do for you.

My S5 with a removable battery is IP67 rated, the same as the "remove features for water resistance" IPhone X, I do feel like this device could be better in water resistance, but that is a tiny price to pay for a product like this.

@@Carterthielftw_ The problem is what happens if you repair a modern phone. There's a good chance that it will cease to be water resistant, or will have less water resistance than it did new. That's what makes a phone like this potentially better. There are no seals that need to be broken (which is often the glue in modern phones), so it's designed to still retain the same level of resistance to dust and water as when it was new.

@@daviddavies3637 I agree, and I really don't care much about liquid resistance myself, however after repairing a couple of IPhone 6s and a Droid 2 Turbo, both devices had glue that would have been more resistant to water than a fairphone even after 5-6 years. It's not a huge deal and I think the device is still a great deal, but It could go the extra mile to prove to people that repairability does not equal a loss in features

The EU should have a rule that devices must e.g. unlock their bootloaders and provide the blob drivers once they end official support. Android phones are, after all, basically small Linux computers. If the bootloader and drivers are available, it's really not that hard to create 3rd party firmwares, once the manufacturer doesn't support it anymore.

All android manufacturers are required to provide unlockable bootloaders. They don't do this out of the goodness of their heart; rather, it's part of GPLv2 compliance. Were they to refuse, it'd be easy to sue them for breach of contract.

Even if you manage to track it with GPS, good luck getting to it before the thief chucks it at a brick wall out of frustration. Best you can hope for is to wipe it remotely before it goes offline. A locked bootloader helps no one but the manufacturer, period.

This fairphone is more than powerful enough for my daily use and the prospect of being able to keep it alive for as long as I want is very appealing to me. I was in a similar boat, daily driving an HTC One M9 but it got to the point where the phone would get hot and everything would slow down just browsing the web. I ended up replacing it with a used Oneplus 6 that cost me $115 on eBay.

​@@Gonbatfire Actually my original OPO's died last june, I assume it was the battery since it would shutdown when unplugged. But luckily I was able to revive my brother's old OPO which had become unusable from software issues. I installed LineageOS on it and now it has a second life in my pocket :) Battery lasts a full day which is good enough for me.

Tbh I'm kinda tired of the super streamlined features and "thinner than ever!" stuff in phones. I've rocked big boi galaxies and cheapo walmart smartphones alike and they both work the same in the end. What I really want is a beefed up version of this - a half inch thick, steel cased, completely modular, repairable, upgradeable behemoth that can take a hit and uses it's extra space for pure unadulterated power and tech that can be continuously changed with next gen upgrades or modifications whenever. Effectively a phone like this but built like a PC tower. I'm very excited to see how fairphones advance if they can get the funding up and up as they take off

Same thing here, I'm looking into getting a Rog phone as my next phone, it's powerful and ergonomic ( read as large ) enough that I won't need a case because it keeps slipping out of my hands, plus that have a headphone jack, only downside is that they don't have (at least up until the RP5) water protection, but I never have dived with a any of my phones so far, so that won't be a problem.

The important thing for me, is being able to get a nice case for it. Something heavy-duty, with a built-in screen protector type deal. Replacing parts is important to me, important enough to buy a $600 phone instead of a refurbished one. But not needing to replace those parts in the first place is important too.

My last phone had microphone issues though but the one before it had port issues and probably the one before that aswell. I've only had 1 phone crack the screen, I've had 1 flip phone (remember those?) break in half, but other than those, it's usually just very minute issues that led me to upgrade. I think even one phone I had to upgrade because Apple stopped supporting it for software updates and the phone literally turned slower than a brick. Edit: I'm 100% buying a Fairphone once I upgrade from my current one. I'm almost tempted to get one right now (I won't since it's a waste when my current phone works fine), but it's been quite some time since I felt that way. The samsung flip screen stuff seemed cool aswell several years ago until lo and behold it broke as expected. Other than that I normally don't feel excited to get a new phone while I'm fine with a current one, feels like a waste of money to be frank.

In the last decade I've had to upgrade two phones for security updates, and one phone because the battery was dying. My current phone cost about 50% of the cost just to replace the screen, and has a janky charge port. With a Fairphone I could have had phones last a lot longer. (Just need this last one to last until they officially sell to North America. :)

I think this would work best in an enterprise setting, coming from an IT background. Imagine an employee phone has a component break and the fix changes from shelling $700 for an S10 or A11 and instead having extra components to fix a broken module. Batteries. Most high end phones are fine to run Outlook, PowerPoint Mobile, Excel and a web browser (you know business stuff you would do on your phone) for several years. But without software support (security patches mostly) and the ability for the darn thing to make it through the day, they turn into paperweights in 2-3 years. This thing should be selling like hotcakes to enterprises (maybe a custom version with better water resistance and a couple of external torx screws so employees aren't messing around with IT's stuff).

I used my fairphone 2 until recently, for 3 years easy. I bought it some months before the launch of fairphone3, that means the fairphone2 was already "old" in some way. It wasn't perfect, had some software issues and not a lot of updates. I had to replace parts 3 times, and it used to get reaaaally hot with ressource consuming apps. I am hoping these issues got fixed, because Fairness and reparability are worth paying extra.

The Fairphone 3 was quite a lot better than the FP2, my fleet of FP2s (one for every member of the family and 1 spare) almost all needed the bottom microphone and/or charging port replacing at least once. Since moving to the FP3 the only problem I've seen is one where the screen went black after the phone was dropped, I took it apart and screwed it back together and it started working again. Now I've got a FP4 and it's been working without problems for six months or so.

Got the Fairphone 3. It's lasted me 2 years already with almost no drawbacks. Still as fast as day 1. Imo Phones should last for 6 years until you really have to replace them and Fairphone is totally the right step towards it. Thanks for bringing attention to this awesome company.

My old-ass Sony chargers worked, but took several hours to charge the battery. My even older HTCs didn't work, as well as the very recent Huawei from my wife's phone. In the end, I had to buy a charger, and ensuring I got the right one wasn't easy or straightforward.

The battery of my Iphone 5S "died" about 1 1/2 years ago (it was empty 30 min after charging while on standby), so I wanted to get a modular phone where I could replace things, so I got the Fairphone 3 at the time. Had issues which were luckily on warranty but I'm really happy otherwise. This phone was just the perfect choice for me, since I don't play mobile games (since the mobile games market is trash for the greater part at the time) and wanted a long lasting phone for daily drive usage.

I'm so tired of Marketing gimmicks and over hyped minor upgrades that I'm seriously considering to buy this one as my next phone. Sure, it has compromises, but with guaranteed OS updates and Sustainable practices this little company is doing far more than the industry giants. Also, this evokes a child like curiosity inside me, a feeling I had over a decade ago when smartphones were up and coming, which has been thoroughly replaced by boredom, thanks to tasteless designs and upgrades. I think I'm going to love using this. Kudos to the team behind this, I knew of fairphone before but was hesitant to make the jump, but this is a compelling package.

Saw an article in the BBC about this phone and got it the next day! It's chunkier, a bit slower, and battery life is a little bit lower. But......having the piece of mind that I can repair/replace the screen and battery makes me my ore optimistic about using this phone for a long time. Would highly recommend the Fairphone!

Seriously considering this as my next phone. I've always had Galaxy flagships but the last three upgrades have been pretty damp in new features and the last two have broken *very* quickly. My previous Galaxy's speaker broke within 6 months and my most recent one's speaker also broke within 6 months, meaning I get quiet, mono audio with nothing and crackles out of the other speaker. More frustratingly my USB C port is super fragile and is very temperamental in whether it will allow me to charge, even more annoying when I'm driving and it makes my satnav keep cutting out. For the price we pay for those phones the reparability or quick service turnaround is a must. I haven't bothered with servicing my phone because it would mean likely getting a factory reset and being without my phone for several weeks which I can't really do without purchasing a burner.

I own a Fairphone 3 for two years now and I am happy with it. Would love to see fairphone and framework partner on stuff, that would be dope! Just keep in mind that when the fairphone 4 launched, there was still software support and some spare parts available for the fairphone 2, and no that is not a typo, for the fairphone 2. Also, they have earbuds and headphones with the same philosophy: headphones are repairable and have replacable batteries, the earbuds have all the features like anc, touch control and in ear detection and you can buy the left and right bud as well as the charging case seperately. Good stuff if you ask me!

I feel this is just the standard of phones about 5 years ago. I got a huawei mate 9, I can open it up in about 2 minutes. Replaced the USB slot like 4 times, battery and you can even replace the full motherboard unit. The phone costed 500$ at the time, and I spend about 200 on spare parts and I can still build 2,5x my phone. Aslong it's not glued you can just open them up, and it's just a couple lego pieces. The upside, I litterly have each and every part. Including the USB and Simslot

there were some cases that were water resistant/proof, i know the Iphone 5 or 4, had a case that had a plastic screen protector inplaced in the case itself so when you snapped it together the rubber would seal, the only thing i saw bad about it was that the jack, and charger werent the best. so there may be a case out there for it in the future

It would also be pretty smart to follow the Apple iterative upgrade pattern. An incremental change every generation, and a redesign every other generation. That way they could even support something of an upgrade path for existing phones

My Moto G5S Plus makes weird grinding (?) noises if the camera is on and I place it down. That got me to contemplate getting a new phone, but ultimately I decided "eh, if it only happens then - that can be avoided". A quarter hour ago (and counting) it made similar weird noises (but only very shortly) while I was simply just browsing on it. Yeah, I think I need to switch. Fairphone got onto my radar when I noticed the camera issue and started researching. Pretty sure I'm getting one of theirs, but still thinking about 3+ vs 4. 3+ is a decent bit cheaper, and is supposed to arrive in 1-2 weeks rather than 5-6. Spec wise it's pretty similar to the Moto, and I don't have many issues with that (sometimes it becomes sluggish, but that's even just when switching apps and stuff, sometimes I have to restart; I think it might be memory (ram or storage) problems rather than cpu speed?). Also, the 3+ is smaller. Some people seem to think "bigger is better", but if I wanted that I would get a bloody tablet (or, well, I guess a foldable if I wanted to carry the tablet around with me). One of the considerations I had that made me choose the Moto was that it was more or less the same size as my previous device instead of bigger. And the 4 is a few mm longer, wider, and a bit thicker (which incidentally is the dimension I care about the least) than the 3+. Actually, just a few mm might be fine. Previously I had looked at the screen size, which is comparatively much bigger since the bezel is less than the 3+ has. Oh right, no headphone jack. Mh, tbh, I don't have or use headphones right now anyway (the ones I have somewhere have a wire break - I think they are from the galaxy S3 I had - or maybe they were from an early IPhone my father got from work but which got replaced and the old one left to me...). I mean, I occasionally connect my wireless pc headphones' usb-a transmitter with an otg adapter because reception is bad in my flat and I can only reliably take calls right next to the window. Well, it's 25% cheaper and does the stuff I need it to, will be here faster, is smaller and just in case, it has a headphone jack. I got the 3+.

I think this review was the last little thing to push me actually buying this one. I really like their philosophy, and I'm still on a Moto G4 I bought in 2017 for 160 €, so any current mid-range phone will be a big upgrade. And honestly, since I always take about sustainability in my consumption, a phone should be in there, too.

Can relate. My phone is doing ok for now, but I'm definitely gonna get farephone when this dies. The price is biting, but I think it's because the other manufacturers got used to certain price levels that doesn't really reflect the real, fare cost of manufacturing (minerals, labor, etc)

My favorite part of the phone is the sustainability. My least favorite thing is the screen. I watch a lot of KZbin and if you don't look at the screen completely head on I feel like the colors distort. I don't know if that is because I pay more attention to that thing nowadays or if it actually is worse than say a Samsung phone that I had before the FP

My Shiftphone (equally repairable) doesn't have the screen distortion you mentioned, though the battery might start expanding in size after like three years of use, then you should just get a new battery. Also the phone case might start cracking and breaking apart after like three and a half years of use. If you want something repairable that lasts for years and has a pretty okay screen, get a shiftphone. they're based in germany and the Shiftphone 8 is currently in development. (I think there's still a few ones left to preorder at a lower price than the projected price of the final product but I can't guarantee that)

This company is definitely on the right path! I really miss removable batteries. I’ll take a little bit smaller battery if I can simply take it out and replace it a charged one. I think if they get their name out there more and then make a high end flagship a lot of people would buy it. I know I would!! just wanted to point out that pressure in a liquid is almost always based on how deep in a liquid something is regardless of volume /container - so one meter of water is certainly more pressure than the few inches of milk (depth wise the lid is only a few inches deep if its on its side)(even with slightly different densities) just a nitpick but awesome video!

The point is for the water to egress from a milk jug it must push against the seal that is containing it. However, with an actual phone the mechanics at play is totally different. Water ingress from any seams the device may have means that there might not be any pressure sealing the joints that the water is entering from.

5G support, 5 year warranty, long time Android support and all the replaceable parts have convinced me. The performance is totally fine for me. And gimmicks like wireless charging or 120 Hz don't interest me anyway. Living in germany, luckily ordering a FP 4 was not a problem. As it is going to replace my old Huawei P9 lite (of which i already replaced the battery some time ago), it will also be a perfomance upgrade for me. I am really looking forward getting my fairphone.

@@-danR obviously you don’t have to buy one, but bare in mind for example, that you can easily replace stuff in the future and upgrade components and if you plan on using the device for years with upgrades here and there, you can still pay less than you used to. But again, you aren’t forced to buy anything, it‘s ok to not be able to afford such a phone, I can’t either, but if someone can financially I would highly suggest it, because I would buy it :).

I only upgraded my Pixel recently because the fingerprint sensor stopped being reliable and somehow the power button was holding itself down. RE 5:37: A meter of water is significantly MORE pressure than a milk jug cap experiences. The pressure is solely based on the height of the liquid. That's why we measure pressure in mmHg, it's milimeters (distance) of mercury. We measure in millimeters, not volume, because only the vertical component matters.
