The Anti-Revolution: How to Be a 'Man of God' (Video Essay)

In this video essay, I analyse the symbolism of the beautiful film, Man of God, which is about the true story of Saint Nektarios of Aegina. As a venerated Saint in the Orthodox Church, he is a great example of what it looks like to break the cycle of revolution by turning the wrath of the passions inward, towards purification, in the love for God and man.
Holy Saint Nektarios, pray to God for us sinners.
Description of MAN OF GOD:
Yelena Popovic, writer and director of the new film MAN OF GOD. Man of God brings to life the incredible true story of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, Greece. A priest of the common people, his humility annoyed the prideful orthodox clergy of the day. In contrast to his religious “superiors” - the bishops and patriarchs mesmerised by worldly honours and power - Nektarios cared for the poor; taught peasant girls to read and write; inspired by example young men to enter the priesthood; and wrote books and delivered sermons that uplifted nations of believers. In this exquisitely made film, relive St. Nektarios’ inspiring devotion and perseverance as, despite the efforts of the religious establishment to discredit him and dismantle his good works over decades, he embraced humility and inspired thousands to become one of Greece’s most renowned saints.

Did I just discover a treasure chest? 🥺 I'm an ex-Muslim female and I strongly think I'll be baptized as Nektaria when the Lord wills it because I love this man so much. St. Nektarios of Aegina pray for us and for our loved ones. Amen 🙏❤️☦️

And so may I wish you both an preliminary Happy Name Day, as Saint Nektarios is commemorated on 9 November every year in the Orthodox Church and his feast day is celebrated everywhere but especially on Aegina. I was thinking (as I have been for quite sometime now) of just taking the ferry to go this weekend. And I didn't even realize. But I might just wait for next Sunday. Hope to see you both there one day too.

To you both, and to the owner of this channel, I spent the whole day today at Saint Nektarios Monestary in Aegina. I lit a candle for all three of you and for myself, and of course you were on my mind, in my heart and my prayers (along with all who are presently in a crisis and persecuted in this world wherever they may be). It was an unforgettable experience, today was. Too many details, all of them beautiful. Praying 🙏 you get to visit one day too.

My God, what a video. How does this have so few views? Orthodoxy truly is a gem in plain sight that the unseen enemy doesn't want everyone to see. Very good work, and blessed be God for making me stumble upon this.

And Saint Nektarios is still reaching out and healing our wounded hearts. I cannot begin to count the many languages that Agni Parthene Despoina (Oh Virgin Pure Immaculate) has been translated into and sung as a hymn, found right here on KZbin. All of them beautiful. That is a miracle in itself 100 years after he fell asleep (as we say in Orthodoxy), to reach perhaps millions on a global scale, through humility. I cry every time I come to the realization of this very fact. And also through your analogy. Thank you.

“The Lives of the Saints are nothing else but the life of the Lord Christ, repeated in every Saint to a greater or lesser degree in this or that form. More precisely, it is the life of the Lord Christ continued through the Saints, the life of the incarnate God the Logos, the God-man Jesus Christ Who became man." St Justin Popovich

Thank you for this. I’ll go out on a limb and say this is the best video essay I’ve seen, “if only” because it is explicitly Orthodox in its interpretation. Wish there were more orthodox-based videos online! May God bless your work, In XC, Paul

I took my mother to see this movie and something changed in her. We’ve had a horrible relationship for years that was very abusive. Since I showed her another way, she’s really been a different person. She’s not yet a member of the church but I’ve given her icons of Christ and of the Theotokos and she treasures them, and has started reading the Bible I gave her. Selfless love changes people.

A VALID QUESTION: The biblical god Yahwe is supposed to have created the universe, the earth and the humans. We humans exist since 300k years and we have thousands of religious human testimonies from 100k - 6k years ago from hunting gods, fertility gods, venus gods, pantheons of hundreds of gods, etc but not a single testimony of a "one and only god" yahwe or Adam and Eve. How come that this god, that is supposed to have created us at the beginning, is first mentioned only 3500-5000 years ago?
@heftymagic4814

because humanity didnt exist further then 6 thousand years ago. there is no mention because there was no "this" further back then that

@@heftymagic4814 Thanks for your asnwer, well the oldest homo sapiens skeleton found so far in Morocco is dated with the Thermoluminescance method on 300,000 years of age. They also found hundreds of homo sapiens skeletons all over Nother Africa dated on 250k years or 180k years depending where they found them. So thats a fact that we humans exist since around 300k years. Well correct is that archaeologists are very active lately: they are digging out for example a human settlement with a pagan temple dated on 12,000 years of age with a fertility cult room full of stone penises in Turkey. In south Europe they found cave paintings with shamanistic hunting gods scenes dated on 60,000 years of age, they found all over Europe artefacts of Venus gods dated on 40,000 years of age, and of course the oldest scripts of complete pantheons of gods 10,000-8,000 years of age. Oldest homo sapiens skeleton found in Morocco is dated on 300k years. We found millions of artifacts with many different religious believes and they are still finding a lot more now, in the next decades we will know much more. But they do not find a single testimony of a one and only god Yahweh or Adam and Eve older than the bible (3500 years). It’s getting even worst: the homo neanderthalensis is even older than us and was also religious (he put his dead people in graves together with grave goods for afterlife). Is homo neanderthalensis also considered by god? How about homo heidelbergensis? Or homo erectus? Did god create Adam and Eve as homo heidelnergensis in his image and then we humans evolved to homo sapiens and now we have a more advanced image than god?

When order is oppression, chaos is justice. Constitutional republicanism is the only viable form of mortal governance. The American Revolution was true to the purpose of the spirit of revolution which is to liberate. Plenty of revolutions have been hypocritical, but their hypocrisy doesn't prove authoritarianism, collectivism, autocracy, or tyranny of any kind to be good or right. And let's not forget that the Bible describes tradition, itself, as a form of idolatry. 2:00 History has proved over and over again that the Neville Chamberlain policy of fatalistic appeasement and defeatism only enables tyranny. 4:25 This might be the Ayn Rand-inspired part of me speaking, but asceticism seems like an authoritarian collectivist Third World philosophy.

asceticism is not collectivist third world philosophy. church of the eternal logos speaks on this you should check him out. revolution can never liberate due to its cyclical nature. the lodges that incited all these great revolutions like the american revolution knew this and wrote about it

“Constitutional republicanism is the only viable form of government” Well I guess all of human history until 200 years ago just didn’t happen then. And asceticism by definition cannot be third world. Third world is a term that only exists in the context of the Cold War. Your way of thinking doesn’t stretch past the 20th century so it has many blind spots.
