Absolutely, if you haven’t revisited it in a while I think it’s worth it next time you’re in the mood for a broken heart.

As a fifty-five year old yeah this is a movie to watch. It bring the trauma of war to it's core.

Although nobody watched "Deer Hunter" in Soviet Union, it was nevertheless mentioned and branded as "antiVietnam" and "antiSovetic" movie by USSR press of the period.

This movie definitely gets hurt by clips existing on KZbin. There’s no way this movie hits the same on the first viewing if you’ve seen the POW stuff before watching.

Lucky for me I went in with no idea what would be going down. I could imagine it would though, good point.

The best anti war movies are: A midnight clear (1992) / Play Dirty (1969) / Johnny got his Gun (1971) / Cross of Iron (1977) / Stalingrad (1993) / Comming home (1978). The Deer Hunter was a slow burner warmovie. And indeed Walken did a Deerhunter cameo in "Pulp fiction" .

This movie “sucks” cause it’s the truth, it amazing they got it made. The frustration of returning veterans is cause we treated them like shit, I’m sure they didn’t want to be there, the Vietnamese didn’t want them there. From the day they took that oak it was a total cluster….🙏😎

I never forgot this warmovie, De Niro made Travis Bickle also a Vietnam vet. Not an 101 Airborne soldier but one from a infantry regiment.

Why is every airheaded wannabe movie critic on the internet calling this a "war movie"??? When Cimino said "it's not a war movie" in every frikkin interview he ever made on the damn thing? IT'S NOT A WAR MOVIE, FOLKS. Capeesh?

Someone didn’t watch the video, definitely covered that. Just because the word “war” is in the title (hyphenated with “anti” by the way) does not mean you know what I’m trying to say. Hate away though, comes with the territory of putting yourself out there.

@@middlechildmovies You're totally right, didn't watch the video; 10 seconds in heard "war movie" and rolled my eyes. Because that's exactly what every previous vid I watched on the deer hunter said, and their "reviews" were consequently utter cr@p. How could they not be, when the very premise of the review is wrong? But you're right again, that is technically being biased. So, since I'm a reasonable person, I will now give your video a chance and then tell you what I think.

@@middlechildmovies Ok, I watched the vid, and here's my honest opinion: it's not as bad as the others, but still gravely misleading in regards to what the movie is really about. Saying it's an "anti-war movie" as opposed to it's a "war movie" doesn't really make much difference in that respect. Because an anti-war movie is still a war movie just emphasizing how war is bad and will mess you up, instead of glorifying some heroic personage or group important within the context of the conflict at hand. But none of Deer Hunter's main messages are "war is hell". And there are no heroes or winners in this film. In fact, the war here is merely a useful metaphor, a prop, and as such coincidental. Could just as well been 9/11, hurricane Katrina or any dramatic, high-impact, life changing event of massive proportion. This should kind of be obvious since the movie invests a whole hour introducing the characters through their quite unexceptional, blatantly provincial, blue-collar-Joe daily routines and relationships. Heck just the wedding portrayal is 40 min. long. But all the key conversations happen in this part of the movie; the essence of the movie is in those dialogues. The rest is merely epilogue.

Well I’m glad you gave it a shot. I could make the argument that art is subjective and what you take away from it can be what it means to you, regardless of creative intent. If you wanted to draw a cat and everyone thought you drew a dog, what’d you draw? That sort of line of thinking is how I view all art, I think it’s subjective, and different things can speak to different people in different ways. Thanks for the critiques though, have a good one.

“He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.” ~Albert Einstein
