I’ve been doing ceramics for several years, and know how much work goes into handmade pieces. It’s a time consuming process, and a labor of love. It’s also expensive to make when you add up the cost of the materials used and the hours of labor that go into a handmade piece. That being said, I can still understand how someone would be put off by the $58 price tag for a single bowl. I make all my plates/bowls myself because a) it’s a mesmerizing process and I love making them, and b) it’s still cheaper than buying them from another potter 😂

@jmuntАй бұрын
(Copying from a different comment I left) It’s a run of 300. In no world is a run of 300 MEANT to have mass consumer appeal. Small batch products are always more expensive to make (it’s called economies of scale) so they are naturally more expensive to sell. This is a normal thing in every product category. They’re barely gonna make money on these bowls, it’s just a cool thing for the couple hundred people out there who want it. This happens all over. Some people are into clothes and spend a bit more for something equally functional but a more premium look and feel. For some, golf clubs. Some, cars. Some, musical instruments. Some, rugs. Some, gaming PC setups. And some, yes, bowls. We all have different interests and tastes. We all have bought something that someone else would call overpriced

@fluffylilmarshmallow4525Ай бұрын
Not criticizing your choice to unsubscribe, but I wanted to give you a different perspective and see if it might change your mind. He made 300 bowls with a local studio that hand-makes quality ceramics. It is a product he made with his specifications and preferences in mind, but wanted to offer those who have the means to support his dream, as well as the local studio to be able to pay their artisans a fair wage. On the other hand, Patreon is another way to support channels like this one, and they offer tiered donation options so that people can each give within their means, but only if they want to. I think of this as a Patreon upper tier donation in which the giver can receive something in return for their support. I don't have the financial means to participate, but I'm not offended by that. It seems to me that people are used to mass marketing, large companies exploiting workers in order to make large profits for themselves, and we're just used to thinking every item we see should be affordable for everyone. But the problem with that thinking is that we are buying into exactly what the companies want: mindless consumerism. I think things like this are nice. It's a labor of love from Mike, and even though there are SO many bowls on Amazon for less than $5, $58 is what they deemed affordable for them (the studio he used) in material costs, time, worker compensation, shipping, etc. I get that it's not justifiable for people like you and me, but that might be because we're conditioned to think a bowl should cost very little without thinking about whom the low cost would exploit. Maybe someday the system will be different, but if we don't challenge it, things will never change. I'm NOT suggesting we buy these bowls if we don't have the means, but maybe just that we don't criticize high quality craftsmanship made sustainably in small quantities just because we can not afford it, and just because it's in sharp contrast to the unfair conditions needed to make them cheaper. Do you see what I'm saying?
