In 1776, a multi-ethnic group of families completed an epic, 1900-mile journey at the mouth of San Francisco Bay. These 240 men, women, and children -- the first Spanish settlers to come overland into California -- forged a path through history and laid a cultural foundation for the American West.
Juan Bautista de Anza led the expedition from present-day Sonora, Mexico, through Arizona, and north along the California coast to establish the presidio and mission of San Francisco. The colonists were aided in their journey by Native American communities that would be forever changed by their arrival. Today, our nation commemorates the legacy of the Anza expedition through the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.
This film was released in 2012 and is a production of the National Park Service and Environmental Exchange. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/juba

My family traces its roots to Mallorca where father Font came from. Father Pedro Font is a family hero who made several important trips in the American Southwest (this one in 1775-1776 being the most famous). He was a map maker and kept diaries of daily events which today provide a rich account of life during that time. Its nice to see this re-enactment. This is an important period in the development of the United States.

This looks like it was a lot of fun to make. I see no mentions in the credits citing Source material. I've been looking for my roots for the longest. I always get stumped at either Alamos Sonora or Tucson Arizona. I wonder if he named the little town I grew up in in California? It's between the Carmel Mission and San Juan Bautista. The little town was called Aromas

One of the new information that not many history books note is how many Basque were part of the exploration and settlement of New Spain. My understanding that Anza got his commission and funds for this expedition because of his Basque connection with the Royal Department of Finance in Mexico City. Basques held various important positions in New Spain and tend to support their fellow countrymen. The Basque did not consider themselves as Spanish, but as Basque with their own language and customs. They were explorers, soldiers , sailors, ship builders, ranchers, and mission builders. It is true they served the Spanish Crown, but they played an important part in the colonization of New Spain and especially California.

The basques are spanish as any other one, in the peninsule lived different people but we were always spanish, since the fenicios came calling the peninsule ispanna, through the romans as Hispania and from the modern times. Basque country is a region in Spain as Galicia, Asturias or Andalucía. We are all spanish, and the basques ones of the proudest until these modern times have arrived, and the crazy stupid left ideology has contaminated the mentality of the people. The basques were, are and will be spanish.

Next to the discovery of San Diego this is probably the most important Act that establishes both Mexico and the United States and the Western tribes. Unlike other tribes around the United States the southwestern tribes will remain strong though times will go up and down. Amazing stuff. Underlines why the West is memorialize so often in America.

Uhhh, NO. More like “the only video” out there & needs to be redone. It is filled with corny re-enactments & has a glaring lack of historical research. Anza historian/author (who will remain nameless) personally told me he was completely underwhelmed by this “production”. 😂 🤦‍♂️

gora Euskal Herria! gora Alta California! proud of my basque-irish ancestry: officers of the Spanish Royal Navy who during the 18th century served in Acapulco, the Marianas, Philippines, and then in the viceroyalties of Peru and Rio de La Plata... it is important to notice what it is said here: that about 30% of Anza`s expedition was formed by castas of african descent! which reflects the demographic composition of the area of Nayarit and Guerrero at that time and is often forgotten. Since Cabrillo`s expedition in the 16th century every Spanish expedition to California, Alaska and the Far East had some of such afromexican castas in their ranks! (as well as a few philippinos) Even to this day this african influence is clearly visible in the Costa Chica of Guerrero and Oaxaca, as well as some traces of the afro-philippine presence in Nayarit and Sinaloa... I think this is important to be mentioned, since such facts are frequently forgotten, following the strategy of "invisibility" which traditional history has adopted for so many years...

I initially present my excuses because my English is not as good as I should like, but perhaps my text can be understood. Greetings from Spain. It is well known that Hollywood has been and actually is the biggest dreams factory all over the world, but not only this but also a history library. The United States is perhaps the only country where two empires with different cultures lived together despite their military encounters, and both countries left a deep trace of their step through American lands. Two empires that dominated the world. Spain landed on U.S. lands in 1513. British did it on 1607. A century later. The whole films production of Hollywood is focused only to British inheritance, and it causes that a great part of US citizens has any knowledge about the history of their country. And I wonder, why Hollywood doesn't exploit the immense story of the Spanish inheritance? A country that dominated great zones of Europe, America, Africa and Asia. A long list of unknown characters eagerly awaits the arrival of Hollywood researchers, historians and producers who have the courage to deepen the roots of the other part of their own history. Hollywood has a well full of gold, but it is unknown.

EXACTLY. It’s quite mediocre. The NPS did not put out a open bid for producers for this project. It was basically a “who knows a local video production company who could do this?”/connections at NPS. No open competitive bidding. Corrupt connections bred mediocrity. Needs to be done over/updated.

There's no lying in loving us both. LOL. In fact I have a guilty pleasure of enjoying Mexican food and kosher. I know, I'm going to hell. But is that Mexican food and kosher on the menu then I'm in it to win it.
