Love this! I have a question wich is not really about this topic. What is the difference between car wheels vs The wheels of the car ? Village church vs church of the Village? So the pages of the book would be book pages?
@englishbuff109611 ай бұрын
That’s a good question. Let’s take a book as an example. We say “book pages” when referring to the physical sheets of paper within a book, while "pages of the book" can refer to the content or specific sections within the book.
@inbcetc35692 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Why the "car door" at 5:07 but the "wheels of the car" at 5:21? (Why not the door of the car and the car wheels?)
@englishbuff1096 Жыл бұрын
Both options are possible. We can say the door of the car and the car door. But the car door is more common.

Wait, we don't use the apostrophe to indicate an object, building or furniture's ownership. But then you wrote "The windows of the house"? Why not "The house windows"?
@elderscrollsswimmer48332 жыл бұрын
Because you need the of-genitive for the head of state and the like. Also, it's handy when you translate from a language that actually uses genitive case. Or try the teach said language.

А в примере он читает "джемиз" James' company, а не джемис компани. Так как правильно их читать? Когда прочитал на уроке Bess' dress, мне сказали, что бэс дрэс читать неправильно, что надо бэсиз дрэс
@englishbuff10962 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. To avoid the confusion between the name and possession, more and more people opt to say JamZIZ for both options (James's / James').

If I should use apostrophe S with a certain place or time, so should I always say "I'm at the bakery's" instead of "I'm at the bakery?"

Hi there, Yana! Congrats on the nice video. Where are you from? I'm just asking because I got some questions about what you were explaining at 5:53. I had never seen those rules. Might it be a regional rule from your country maybe? Cause I've been watching lots of videos from lots of teachers but never saw those examples you taught. Thank you in advance!

It's a bit confusing because I saw in another video that we don't use aps s when there are collective nouns like: men, women, children, people...
@hrleinad2 жыл бұрын
AFAIK; men, women and children are not collective nouns; and people is collective only in certain cases. You can, in some cases, say: "The people is", but you can never say "The men/women/children is". "Plural nouns" is not the same thing as "collective nouns".
