In this lesson, Mr. P./Marc will look at the genitive. Four rules characterize it. The one taking an apostrophe S, the one taking just an apostrophe, the ones omitting the noun being owned, and those regarding things. Can things possess other things? In this lesson, he will give examples and show you a formula for using genitives correctly.
This lesson is intended for elementary students who wish to learn English grammar and for those levels above elementary who wish to clear up doubts about this grammar rule.
Mr. P. is a Canadian English Teacher/Coach from Toronto, Canada, who has been teaching English since 1997. He is a certified English teacher specializing in EFL, ESL, TOESL, TOEFL, #IELTS, KET, PET, CAE, FCE, and CPE. He taught English to adults in Rome for 20 years and became an Honorary Fellow at UNITELMA Sapienza University in Rome in 2015.

Nice video! But I don't think a compound word uses a ¨Dash¨ I'm pretty sure it's called a ¨hyphen¨ 3:12 (computer dash screen). A hyphen (-) is a punctuation mark that's used to join words or parts of words. It's not interchangeable with other types of dashes. A dash is longer than a hyphen and is commonly used to indicate a range or a pause

I can't remember the title of the book. Can we say that "of the book" is a genitive? Thanks to you in advance.
@Englishing
@Englishing 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, actually it is better to say the title of the book. Because book is a thing and it cannot possess anything. Only humans possess. Please share

With things and animals you have to say ... of ... right? But if you say the name of your pet, like my dog's named Dusty. So do I say Dusty's paw or the paw of Dusty?
@Englishing
@Englishing 7 жыл бұрын
right ! but it's not wrong to say my dog's food (it's fine). It's just a choice. Thank you ! please share

Whenever you add human traits to animals or you are speaking about pets or intelligent animals (like dolphins), you can use the genitive case. Hope it helps
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 7 жыл бұрын
Since "Dusty" is what we call a proper noun (your dog's name), "Dusty's paw" is correct.
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 7 жыл бұрын
"My dog's food" would be preferred because it's less awkward and cumbersome. Native speakers of English (of which I'm one) tend to prefer simpler constructions over more complex ones.
@Englishing
@Englishing 7 жыл бұрын
That's right ! but you cannot say it's wrong if a student uses the other construction.

Also, one more comment about the use of the apostrophe with singular common and proper nouns that end in S: Native English speakers use the rule that what sounds natural to the speaker is the correct form to use. So you can say either "James' car" or "James's car." I think, however, that the latter is what would sound more natural to a native speaker, so that is what you would most likely hear. And a native speaker would never say (or write) "the dress' color." A native would say (and write) "the dress's color" (or more commonly, "the color of the dress").

Great ! I come from Toronto in Canada. I've been living in Rome for long (answering to your previous question), and I've been teaching English for 21 years now. There are a lot of things I need to mention about the genitive. However, this lesson is for elementary, and pre-intermediate students so I tried to be very concise. Best !
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 7 жыл бұрын
That explains your accent, which sounds as though you've become so fluent in Italian over the years that it's colored your English pronunciation just a bit -- I actually thought you were a native Italian speaker (I also happen to speak Italian, incidentally)!

Yeah (unfortunately) I always go back to Canada though. I need to be in contact with English all the time, and you know we are like animals...we adapt and we become less what we "originally" are. However, nice to meet you Lee.
